A couple of doors down from the Travelodge London Waterloo, this family-run cafe-style restaurant serves delicious fish and chips in simple surroundings.

The service is speedy and efficient, the food very tasty, the portions big and the prices very keen. A jumbo cod and chips with bread, butter, gherkins, pickled onions and complimentary prawns to start costs £8.50, a bottle of Peroni £2.75.

It's not going to win any wards for interior decor, but is well worth a visit.

Tamarind and Thyme

Tamarind and Thyme

Sunday, May 23, 2010 - When your plates come, the waitress also comes over with large bowls of pickled cucumbers and pickled onions - I had one of each. It turns out I quite like pickled onions...The fish was beautifully fried and very fresh. The chips were tasty with a good potato flavour but a little soggy, which was a little disappointing. Still, it's a solid place for fish and chips.

Will Eat For Money

Will Eat For Money

Wednesday, December 23, 2009 - calamari is quite good. Crisp batter hides rings of slightly chewy squid, but with a squirt of lemon and a tiny bit of tartare sauce, it's tangy and slightly like fishy popcorn. The chips are once again great. I'm a bit of a chips geek and I believe I've perfected them at home, but those at Masters are brilliant, perhaps the best to be found in London, which sets this place above The Golden Hind. Crisp on the outside, fluffy and soft on the inside, the perfect size - my sort of chip. My girlfriend Sam goes for the cod and chips and ever the jealous type, I try some and it is great. Fresh fish that flakes away with ease and is steamed under the great, crisp batter. A marvel in frying!

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

Friday, September 04, 2009 - I was pleasantly surprised. The crisp, light and relatively grease free exterior gave way to a beautifully cooked fresh fish, gently steaming within its fortress of batter. I believe that they get their fish fresh from Billingsgate market every morning and on this evidence, I certainly wouldn't doubt that. Chips were adequate if nothing special but a special mention has to be made to the accompanying pickles. The gherkin was crisp and the pickled onion, gum suckingly sharp and again beautifully crisp.
