Suvai Aruvi is a Sri Lankan gem of a takeaway in Colliers Wood. It can't be missed as it stands on the main high street, I was alerted to it years ago when passing in my car and noticing the regular queue of Tamil looking clientele lining up for their mutton rolls, vegetable samosas, string hoppers and other goodies. One day, I stopped for lunch and the rest is history.
I have to say that their mutton set lunch is and has been a highlight. For less than a fiver, you are offered a four serving spoon dollops of aubergine curry, spinach, dall and devilled mutton curry on a bed of white rice. But that's just me; the other excellent fare include fried sprats, fish curry, mutton roti and chilli prawn. There is a small restaurant which is a step up from the Formica top, strip light variety so you can eat in and check out the Tamil musicals playing on their huge flat screen.
These days the lunchtime queue is much more cosmopolitan but the clientele still need sturdy taste buds because Suvai Aruvi does not tone down its dishes for the local palate. This is as authentic as it gets.
