what the critics say

Metro

Marina O'Loughlin - 2/5

Wednesday, January 20, 2010 - The hot and numbing chicken is the highlight of the meal. Despite a Chinese dim sum chef, Guanghao Wu, dumplings are mixed: good, chewy little chicken 'wor tip' (Cantonese potstickers); workmanlike prawn and pork siu mai; featherlight pork buns with an odd, musty, grey-ish filling. 'Singapore Cricket Club noodles' are a good interpretation of the classic stir-fry; and twice-cooked pork - slow-cooked then stir-fried - is a decent dish, pungent and salty...This pseudo-Chinese food isn't awful. It's the fun-vacuum, soullessness of the place itself that leaves me feeling mugged by the bill.

This Is London

Fay Maschler - 1/5

Friday, December 04, 2009 - It is said about over-salted food in a restaurant that smoking may have blunted the chef's palate. Based on jumbo prawns with ginger, Hunan lamb, potatoes with Sichuan chilli and dry sauteed green beans the chef must have a 60-a-day habit...One of our party described Sichuan pepper and chilli squid as 'assault and battery'. However, ma po tofu (bean curd with a minced meat sauce) was excellent with a silky, biddable texture in the tofu and just the right amount of chilli heat in the sauce.

Being Chinese myself, I didn't find anything particularly special about this place. Of course the food has been Westernised slightly and is not truly authentic, but what the heck? If it pulls in the local punters that is fine by the hotel. Noodles have a particularly charcoal-ed taste. The chef must have let the sesame oil heat up on too high a heat and the service?? Terribly life-sucking, soul-draining and in need of a good shake up. The decor is bland and grey. I will not be returning to this place again. I can find much better food elsewhere at a much better price.

Amazing Dim Sum - especially the black cod and the lobster dumplings! My main course of scallops was also very tasty. I would definitely eat there again. The place was fairly full and the service was good

I dined at lunchtime with colleagues and have to say that the food is without doubt some of the best Chinese food I have ever eaten. Each dish had its own clear identity and the choice of seasoning and cooking method for each dish had clearly been given careful consideration taking into account the main ingredient allowing the flavours of the meats and seafood to come through. The seafood dishes were of particular note as the fish and shellfish were clearly very fresh and of superior quality, further more they were clearly prepared by a chef who is very well versed in the cooking of seafood in order to get it to the table at is best. The presentation of the food is also excellent and again, each dish has it own clear identity.

The service offers a comfortable balance between attentive and discreet which gave us just the level of attention we required.

Visually the restaurant is warm and inviting. The décor is clean and modern but not so striking as to distract from its main strength, the food. Being based within the hotel also gave the experience and upmarket feel.

This will definitely be a dining experience I will be repeating (as soon as possible) and would very much recommend.

By far the best Dim Sum I have tasted since visit to Beijing. Superb restaurant and could not fault food and wines were delicious(we sampled a few!). Allow Tony and his superbly attentive staff to choose for you, you will not be dissappointed. So nice to see staff that knew the menu inside out and a soothing and light decor to wrap up a near perfect lunchtime. In all one of the best meals I have had in London this year. If you dont visit soon, the secret will out and reservations a must.

Having dined at some of the finest restaurant’s in London, Chinese included of course, I rate the Chinese Cricket club be amongst the top 3-5.

It is not far off to the likes of Hakkasan, but the service is far superior, we loved the dry fried beans, twiced cooked pork and black cod dumpling as recommended by the waiter and the flavour was just mind blowing. It was cooked to perfection and every dish has its own unique flavours. Being a business hotel, it was quiet doing the weekend but my guess is when the word gets around, you will have a task of securing a table.
