TimeOut

Guy Dimond - 4/5

Thursday, January 06, 2011 - The food at Cassis is pretty damn good, fairly expensive, and with few surprises. The wine list is stacked full of fantastic wines at prices which aren't rapacious, though a sommelier is on hand should you wish to up your game...Some aspects of the meal stood out - the breads were a highlight - while others struggled to make an impact. The pates were perfectly correct but lacked the depth of interest, flavour and verve of the selection of Bar Boulud just down the road. Pan-fried red mullet with fregola (Sardinian couscous) would have been a bland dish without the addition of little brown shrimps.

Tuesday, December 21, 2010 - I decided to get into the spirit of things and order the bouillabaisse. This one terrified me: it was an enormous bowl of clams and several types of white fish placed in front of a gallon-sized pot of that famous viscous brown fish soup was poured atop. Now, looking carefully at the menu it appears the dish was for two people - why did nobody stop me?...My companion had lamb about which he was pretty over the moon. Lamb's not my favourite but the bit of his rack that I tried had a good, deep flavour.

I went with my niece for an early dinner 7pm on a Monday. The restaurant was empty when we arrived but we were really rushed through our meal.We had the special starter of the day which comprised of pastry parcels of spinach, goats cheese and chicken livers the latter was so salty you couldn`t taste anything but salt.We both had ravioli as a main but it was a small portion and very greasy, for dessert we had the special again this was a lemon meringue type flan which was so sweet I sent it back and settled for a scoop of ice cream.Very disappointing experience we will not return .

The food is different but does not work all the time. The problem is they try too hard to do something different which works in some cases but mostly fails.

Sardines rolled over goat cheese sounds interesting for instance.. but the taste doesn't work on the palate.

The staff tried hard to serve us well and have to say did a fairly good job at it.

What failed miserably is the attitude of the manager. Very snobbish... they've lost my check in item at the coat check and basically told us to get lost because they are not liable.. when they themselves had taken the item from us in the first place.

He even went down the "food chain" as to tell my wife that they had already done us a favor for serving us complementary dumplings - where in fact this was done a)because we are extremely loyal customers b) we had received the complementary appetizer before it even became clear that they had lost the item at the coat check as a token of appreciation of our good and loyal custom....... so to tie one with the other ??!! is beyond me.

Long story short... they have a number of good and loyal local customers as I intent to share my experience with everyone I know.

This is what I call short-sited management.

Very average food, Provencal food is much better than that.

I was lucky enough to dine at Cassis last week as it prepared for its official launch. The overwhelming characteristic of the restaurant is generosity, in spirit, quality and quantity. The atmosphere was welcoming and informal (although the decor is certainly smart) and the staff extremely professional and friendly. The food was excellent. We started with a selection of "petites bouchees" such as whitebait, octopus, snails and pissaladiere and a selection of freshly baked bread. Although intended as appetite enticers, the portions were generous and almost made the entrees redundant. Luckily we werent out off the entrees and they were amazing. We chose fois gras, seabream and a selction of homemade pates. For the plats principaux, I chose grouse while my companions opted for Angus steak and duck. Nothing could be faulted although the portions were on the large size (which given the reasonableness of the pricing made us wonder why). Puddings were also tremendous with variations of chocolate clearly a house speciality. I would certainly recommend Cassis and recommend you go soon before they decide the prices are too low. Outstanding good value.

For many years John Brinkley’s THE ORATORY restaurant in Old Brompton Road provided the backdrop for an eclectic crowd. From academics, fashion-models, priests, expensive hookers, faded aristocracy, at least one murderer; an assassin’s target, tourists and a whole swathe of spooks. It was an earthy; buzzy, vibrant place serving good scoff and the least expensive champagne in town. Then, in what seemed to the regulars like greedy, insensitive vandalism, the property-owner raised the rent to a ridiculous level and Brinkley was forced to quit.

Now a new restaurant has taken its place CASSIS, from Marlon Abela Michelin-starred stable (The Greenhouse, UMU) and is due to open next week.

I’ve just had dinner there as they’ve ‘bedded-in’ in a pre-opening trail period.

The place is so welcoming. Subdued warm lightning. A flickering gas-faire; bright, bushy-tailed, knowledgeable and eager wait-staff.

My whitebait were superb. My compnion had a succulent Monkfish ‘ossobuco’, St Marzano tomatoes and basil. And my main - Roast Landes duck breast, chickpea galette and cassis sauce was crispy perfection on the outside and pink fleshed. Simply delicious. For our pudding we shared a positively huge Grand Marnier and orange soufflé in a hat-box sized bowl. A couple of Poire William as a digestif and I was a very happy bunny!

Only criticism was the size of the portions. Vast. Far too much for ‘ladies who lunch’. Even a chap mulled over the idea of a doggy-bag.

I think it could, indeed, be a worthy successor to THE ORATORY.

Cheese and Biscuits

Cheese and Biscuits - 4/10

Monday, November 07, 2011 - 'Roast suckling pig leg, girolles' (22 pounds) sounded exciting on paper (or rather, the daily specials chalkboard), and indeed the pig flesh was beautifully cooked to moist perfection, even if the skin was thin and crackle-free. But the sauce it sat in was over-reduced and bitter, and not particularly pleasant. Worse still was a scallop carpaccio (another chalkboard special, 22 pounds) containing bland scallops that would have been bad enough even if they weren't dressed exactly in the same way as the octopus, with oily croutons, rocket and cherry tomatoes. Snore.
