TimeOut

Guy Dimond - 2/5

Wednesday, November 11, 2009 - The big draw at this basement bar is its excellent range of German beers - seven on draught, plus more than a score by the bottle - and the attractive vaulted basement rooms, evocative of real Bavarian beer halls...Our starter sausage platter had chipolata-sized bangers that were shrivelled and dry through overcooking, and the sauerkraut had an unattractive orange hue and flaccid texture. Kasseler - salted and smoked pork chop - also suffered from being overcooked to dryness.

I have to say that it was a very dreadful experience tonight being out in this restaurant/pub… or whatever it was…. Getting the bill served before the meal was quite a surprise for the whole bunch of 15 people I was there with… Overpriced beer (0.5l Augustiner Edelstoff 4.95 GBP, of course a luxury to get it in London) Poor service, who didn’t even apologize to my complaint.. The dish i ordered was the sausage platter, it looked appalling and has nothing to do with the food I know from my own country. The sausages looked like cooked with a hair drier!! How embarrasing, for me as a German to go out on a night with friends in a place like this. Never again….

Possibly the rudest bar manager I have ever encountered in 15 years of London Pub drinking. A pleasant evening spoilt right at the end when the manager grabbed drinks from our hands - no exaggeration - and told us very aggressively to leave. This was at 11.18pm - the reason given was that staff would have to be paid extra past 11.20pm.

I would never under any circumstances return, there are plenty of professionally run bars on the area that don't leave you feeling threatened and unwelcome.

A friend booked a table in Katzenjammers last Saturday and I have to say I was excited to see another German style food and drink place in London. The beers are really fine, but the food is not well done, only half way authentic, finished with cheap fast food style and ingredients. Also the service on the Saturday we were there was awful, wait was almost half hour after finishing dinner for someone to clear away our plates. Would not go again.

The other reviews seem very harsh, the rooms look amazing and the beer and food (we had schnitzel) were fab on our visit. The atmosphere was amazing, the place was rammed and an excellent oompah band were really getting the crowd going.

a great addition to the Borough

Oh dear, what is that? Being German myself it is not authentic at all.

You can see straight away that Brits (?), or American (?) or somebody NOT German tries to do a German Pub. This is like German would try to run a Thai Restaurant - just not working.

There are other proper German places around in London.
