our review

New Japanese restaurant on Charlotte Street with a slick interior and a menu listing the usual suspects - sushi, sashimi, tempura, and simply grilled meat and fish dishes. There is a concise wine and sake list as well as a couple of shochu cocktails on offer.

Fay Maschler - 3/5

Thursday, November 11, 2010 - In nasudengaku a sweetish, caramel version of miso tops deep-fried aubergine halves resulting in an almost meaty richness that contrasts well, as we discovered, with tuna tartar flavoured and textured with the crunch of flying fish roe (tobiko) and creaminess of quail egg yolk. Even better than the tartar, in my view, is tuna tataki. Thin slices are cut from the fish steak seared in a hot iron pan and then dressed with shredded daikon, sprouted seeds and ponzu jelly. Tempura moriawase (a mixture) of vegetables, prawns and white fish sported crisp dry batter that left not a trace of frying behind.

TimeOut

TimeOut - 4/5

Tuesday, October 19, 2010 - Owned by the same people who run the Korean restaurant Koba just around the corner, ingredients such as gochujang (hot chilli paste) and doenjang (Korean miso) are subtly and successfully integrated into some dishes...Lightly seared octopus slices in a tart and savoury tosazu sauce (a mixture of vinegar, soy sauce and dried bonito fish shavings) was intricately arranged and had a delicate, yet lingering, flavour. Curls of red seaweed, shredded cucumber and flecks of lemon zest were all smart additions to the dish. The sushi is well made, and a benchmark dish of sea urchin spoke reassuringly of decent sourcing.

I love this restaurant!!! Great food, service and atmosphere. I took a friend there for his birthday and went back soon after with my wife. On both occasions everyone had an excellent time.

The menu is rich, which provides you with the opportunity to sample some Japanese dishes that you may not have had previously and the prices are reasonable.

Looking forward to going back again soon!

Nizuni have a good range of food dishes – dispelling the myth that Japanese food is just raw fish. It was clear that it had all been freshly prepared. The setting is very tranquil, however what makes the experience extra special is the service - which was outstanding. Thanks to all the team for making me and my friend feel so looked after. I will be back again!

wow, we ended up dining here when our beloved barrica was closed for bank holiday but were very impressed. The udon noodles were the best i have ever had and with chilli in them so a real treat to have extra heat. The service was very friendly and the gyozo was also very good. The beef bento also was very generous sized portion of meat even though part of lunch deal. We are very pleased to have stumbled across this place. They also open up all the door windows in the summer so its nice and breezy. Excellent lunch option. The main menu looks more pricey but if even as good as the lunch offers it will be worth it!!

I have had two lunches here, both of which were excellent. The first was a selection of smaller dishes and some sushi: everything was wonderful. The second was a mackerel bento box with a shared starter of edamame and beef tataki. Again, all excellent,. Reasonably priced for the quality of the food and environment, although some dishes, like the beef tataki, were slightly stingy (five mouthfuls of beef for £7), especially compared to something like the bento box, which was about £10 for a full meal. Nonetheless I have recommended it to colleagues and will be going back, eagerly. it;s a good venue for a reasonable-mid-priced business or casual lunch.

I went to the restaurant last weekend. I have no idea of Japanese food. I was given very good recomendations from the waiter. I had some tempura and spinachi as stater which were great. and after that I had some Maki and black cod, it was amazing. That was the best cod I've had before. I'll bring my parents next time, they will like it.

We wondered past Nizuni on the off-chance and managed to get a table (albeit by a drafty front door) on a Friday night - result! The food is of a good standard, decor seems to be very new, staff still finding their feet - literally.

We ordered sushi, the portions were far smaller than i'd anticipated, but tasty none-the-same. The restaurant lacked atmosphere, its a mix between a Wagamama's and a mid-tier Japanese restaurant. The staff seem friendly enough.

Make sure you book in advance. One thing, ensure you check the bill, we were surprised to find several instances of green tea miraculously appearing, once queried these were taken off and our total was brought down to the correct amount. Enjoy.

Nizuni at Charlotte Street for a lunch - lovely parfait starter followed by scallops. All presented perfectly, nothing mind blowing but good food, good atmosphere and great ambience nonetheless - and friendly and kind staff aswell . The wine was also very good. Let me go there again....

Really average sushi- the rice was chilled! Massively overpriced and all of the dishes we sampled (including nasu dengaku) are better at your average decent sushi restaurant. Don't bother!

Saturday, March 26, 2011 - Butterfish tataki - Oh man, these were bloody amazing. The already silkened textures of butterfish were further mellowed with a blowtorch, giving the charred surface, a charred smokiness on the palette. Very pleasing. Shiso cress, daikon cress, a proprietary spicy sauce and a dash of balsamic dressing gave the flavours, a zing, a zest and a bite. I was so glad I didn't have to share this with another soul. I gobbled up joyously...I like this restaurant, I think there's alot more to be explored on the menu. The atmosphere is casual, the staff are unrelentingly likeable and the food is delicious.
