what the critics say

Guardian

Sunday, June 26, 2011 - Ah yes, the food. Sticky concoctions, summoned from the gates of hell, or the kitchen, whichever is closer. It's the kind of thing you'd get at a Harvester, only with less subtlety and more cynicism...The main courses both cost me around 23 pounds and my innocence. Hard, dry duck confit laid on overcooked peas and mint in a sickly sweet Thai red curry sauce isn't just a bad idea or bad cooking. It's also really bad manners. Large scallops and prawns were grotesquely over-seasoned and served with a saffron and sour cream sauce that had the authentic tang of something with which you'd clean a bathroom sink.

Wednesday, March 03, 2010 - The most astonishing aspect of Circus is that the food is actually pretty good. Baby squid is light and tender, greaselessly fried, hot with spice. Cornbread is pillowy and perfect. A vast slab of Josper grill-seared fillet steak is a fine hunk of beef and comes with a riot of sides: crisp-fried kale, thyme bearnaise, jalapeno jelly. Pork belly with black-eyed bean fritters; 'adobo' chicken with rice and beans; a beast of a brownie - there isn't a duffer in the bunch. It's calorific, shame-inducing food but very well done.

Circus is a brilliant restaurant. We had a perfect girls night out to celebrate a birthday which all worked so well at Circus. We loved the entertainment, the food was great, cocktails out of this world & such attentive waiting staff. They looked after us from beginning to end. The dancing on the tables at the end of the night was the perfect finish to an incredible night! Thank you, we'll be back!

OMG...from start to finish a total success. sassy and friendly door 'whores', cute as a button serving staff and very attentive GM. food fab, cocktails fab, countless acts sublime. it's always challenging when trying to find the latest hang out to impress clients with - without looking 'try to hard'...this hits the spot on so many levels. thank you circus. i will be back

Circus was amazing last night for our mixed group of boys and girls, celebrating a friends birthday.

The staff bent over backwards with service. We were a group of 20 and they handled everything brilliantly. Cocktails were fab, and we ended up buying a huge punch bowl too which went down a storm. Food was tasty. We got to try a bit of everything and I am definitely going back soon for some more empanadas. Delish!

Went there with my wife on Saturday evening and had a fantastic time. Food was exellent, we both had steak with various side dishes. Entertainment was exellent and the service was first class, drinks were resonably priced. Would recommend for a good fun night out.

We were lucky to be invited to the 'relaunch' of Circus and so have a free taster lunch with a drink. And glad I am that it was free! We had a trio of starters. Warm ginger beef salad with a mango dressing, which was actually the best of the three but nothing exceptional. Soft taco filled with tempura seafood was not good. The pieces of fish were over fried, dripping in oil, and the fish was raw inside. The soft taco just doesnt go with fried tempura and the dish is a mess. The final piece was a vegetable parcel filled with cheese, served with a coconut dip. The dip was actually the only thing that barely had a flavour, the parcel was just a flattened greasy piece of pie with bits of sweet corn the only vegetable recognisable. recommended by the friendly waiter, we ordered a portion of 'Corn hush puppies' - these are some sort of soft fried balls, with some vague corn flavour. They literally dripped in oil - we actually had one each and left half the dish, despite actually paying for it. The drinks were ok - lemon presse and orange juice.

Not a place for lunch, the room is nevertheless airy and bright. The decor might look funky at night, but during the day it's a different story. The golden and black squared walls, the silver balls ...it all looks a bit tacky.

Given the prices of the menu (starters around £7, mains from £15) I will surely not return.

We arrived on a girls evening out - we were surrrounded by many more girls night out groups, some looked like first dates, some looked out of place in the venue. On arrivial at reception, I felt like I was about to hit a night club. i entered the restaurant, the music, the lightling, the glitter balls ! Dear waiters and waitress, please have passion in your work, we are hear to have nice evening & are paying for it, thank you for kindly telling me my avocado salad with the steak - in fact is a 'decoration' - well dont say that in the menu in the first place. With these comments you will be surprised I did have a great evening, once i relaxed over a few cocktails, I got into the mood of shouting so my friends can hear me, the music seemed to drown out a bit, the food is nice - slow to arrive but was nice, we had cheesecake to share - that was pretty and being girls of course we finished it all off ! During our menu, the lights went out, kitchen shutters came down ! this was for the performers...4 performers at different 5 mins slots during the evening ! We had dinner and then moved on to lounge area since the table slot is at a very strict 2 hour slot - unless there was no booking after you. What performers, I will keep that as a mystery to you. Overall its a fun place, do not be too critical, it is not cirque de soliel or burlesque, not a venue for entertaining clients for sure ! have fun.....

We took clients here last night on the strength of MM's review in the Metro and it was an out-and-out embarrassment.

Expensive, below par food; slow, incompetent service (no keeping track of who ordered which dish, just turning up with food and shouting). A 'pan fried fillet' special turned out to be chopped meat, like a goulash. And the entertainment, which is supposedly central to the concept, comprised a pair of gymnasts appearing for a few minutes before dinner and briefly after dinner - utterly lame.

An abomination, easily the worst experience I've had for some time.
