what the critics say
Wednesday, November 17, 2010 - Perhaps because the chum and I are younger and not as minted-looking as our fellow diners, we're comprehensively ignored...Partridge is overcooked into impenetrable greyness (although a little lobe of foie gras is handled with care), its caramelised endive leaches bitter oil on to the plate. Dense little gnocchi do not taste home-made, nor are they, as promised, 'pan-fried'; their lurid orange pumpkin sauce is processed into gloop. Apple crumble is bland, insubstantial and too sweet.
Tuesday, September 28, 2010 - I started out with brown shrimp croquettes - a couple of crusty croquettes filled with luscious prawn meat in a sweet, oozy sauce. I could have eaten these all night, frankly, but that would have denied me the pleasure of Carbonnades Flamandes a la Duvel - beef stew in Belgian Duvel beer. This was terrific - large, meltingly soft chunks of beef swimming in a thick, velvety gravy. Big, bold, rustic food that would be easy to get wrong - how often does one order casserole and stew dishes at such places, only to be served meat that's leathery and tough? - but was satisfyingly right, and good value at 13.20.
Cafe Luc

Cafe Luc
Average service and overpriced dishes, Cafe Luc has got a long way to go if they wish to become a Marylebone destination restaurant.
There are far better brasseries in London with the like of Galvin just around the corner offering better quality menus and value for money.
Overall a poor experience.

Cafe Luc
I've visited the owners place in Ghent and this loveless affair doesn't come close. It looks nice enough but not enough care goes into the dishes to justify their price. Some dishes were just ok, while the fish was actively disappointing and didn't taste all that fresh. Didn't bother with dessert, which is usually an indication of how little you want to linger somewhere. There are lots of new brasserie-style places opening up in London and Cafe Luc will have to improve quickly to keep up with places like 28-50 and Brasserie Joel.

Cafe Luc
As a frequently visitor of Marylebone, I noticed a few months ago a new venue was going to open. Last week, we went eating with 6 friends in Café Luc.
The restaurant: cosy with a vibrant atmosphere. Staff: professional.
Menu: I really liked the organic chicken! As a starter i was very pleased by the melon gazpacho.
Apparently they are open for afternoon tea, so we will go back soon!

what the bloggers say
Bellaphon
Wednesday, January 19, 2011 - My mains of steak and chips - With peppercorn sauce and watercress leaves. Cooked medium rare as requested and George reckoned you couldn't beat the Belgians when it comes to the pommes frites, I agreed....My pudding of Nutella creme brulee. A signature dish at Cafe Luc. The portion was perhaps too large, served a little too cold, but nevertheless stupendously sweet!...Would I come back again? Yes- only if someone else is paying for me or I'll have to wait patiently for the next 1 pound sale.
Cheese and Biscuits
Friday, September 10, 2010 - Moules Mariniere were everything you could hope for and, to be fair, everything you might expect from a restaurant run by Belgians. Big, plump mussels in a delicate white wine sauce, they went down very well, and frites were nice enough if a bit oily. My Dover Sole though was superb, the dense, meaty flesh lifting off the bone in gloriously satisfying chunks...It's not the greatest restaurant in London, or the cheapest (unless you can catch their very reasonable lunchtime offer), but they are very good at seafood.
Tamarind and Thyme
Tuesday, September 07, 2010 - The Terrine of duck confit with foie gras, toasted sourdough was quite a large and pleasant slice of a cold terrine with plenty of tender duck studded with rich lumps of foie. We both opted for the Steak Frites, pepper sauce for our main course. These were, I believe, rump steaks, if the flavour is anything to go by and weren't bad - actually, I had quite low expectations and this did turn out to be better than I expected. The bowlful of excellent frites were salty and crisp and we didn't expect the generous mound of peppery watercress which went down a treat soaked in the meat juices.
Gourmet Chick - 7/10
Monday, August 09, 2010 - With a menu of brunch possibilities in front of him at the newly opened Cafe Luc he could not resist ordering the Eggs Benedict. The eggs were perfectly poached so that the yolks oozed out but the whites were firm and the all important hollandaise sauce slathered over the eggs was thick and creamy...Croissants were served warm, fresh and buttery soft. A bowl of Greek yoghurt, studded with berries and drizzled with honey was as pretty as a picture and a good lighter option. Omelette with Gruyere cheese and ham was very rich and decadent, perfect comfort food to recover from a late Saturday night.
A Rather Unusual Chinaman
Friday, July 09, 2010 - Averaging around a tenner each, I ordered a simple goat's cheese starter on croutons, a snip for a mere 8.90. Pleasant, but not 8.90 pleasant. Charz's crab tian was alright, and for someone who dislikes the crustacean as much as I was palatable. The thick layer of creme fraiche, however, was an unnecessary and cloying addition...Desserts were another disappointment. Creme Caramel was sloppy with air bubbles throughout, watery caramel and the most alcoholic grapes I have ever had the misfortune in trying.
Dos Hermanos
Monday, June 14, 2010 - Sea Bream cooked on a plancha was a bit flabby and fell apart far too easily. The onion compote underneath was ok. Spinach came with some unwanted cheese. Frites, well, don't bother. Dull wines, served in funny glasses added to the unease with which I endured my meal...During my last trip to Brussels my meals were characterised by competent, honest cooking which while it may not have thrilled had a generosity of spirit which made one feel totally happy to be there. It was admittedly an early visit to Cafe Luc but I can't seem them ever developing that same joie de vivre.
