I love Karage I ate here on my first day in London. However, on my second visit, the taste was not as good as my first day visit.... On my last day in london, I thought I would really like to eat that yummy karage so visited this restaurant again. But sadly I did not get served that Karage any more... taste was different again... and too crispy this time...

Had a lovely group meal on Thursday night. Large tray of various sushi and sashimi, some tempura, and delicious sauces and dips that we hadn't tried before.

Presentation was gorgeous, food very fresh, and service staff friendly and efficient.

A really enjoyable experience, and not very expensive.

I visited Tenshi for the first time over the Bank Holiday weekend. Nice, busy atmosphere, friendly waitresses and sushi was really fresh. Surprisingly wide choice of dishes for a small restaurant and food was good value.

Wow, tenshi getting the low score on London-eating. What a shame, I see some people had AVERAGE experiences and rated the food a 0 or a 1. That makes sense………

The thing I love about tenshi is that it has the most complete menu of any Japanese restaurant I’ve ever been to in London. You can get all the regular stuff like sushi, bento, udon tempura etc but then on top of that you’ll find okonomiyaki, takoyaki and the like. Both of which are great and better than other examples I’ve eaten here. This place is actually great. Sushi rice is seasoned well and the rolls are exceptionally well made. Great eating. Perhaps they had a previous chef who turned out bad food, which would account for the low scores from older reviews, but for the last year in which I’ve eaten there the food has been excellent.

I am so appalled by my experience at Tenshi today. My pregnant sister and I went in for lunch, ordered a bento each. My sister's bento came with avocado maki rolls and salmon maki rolls. Being pregnant and not allowed raw fish, she asked if she could substitute the salmon rolls for vegetarian ones. The waitress said no. I asked if she could ask the chef. She did. He said no. I commented on how UTTERLY unreasonable that was. I said if they couldn't accommodate our wish, we would have to leave. She said OK. We left, cancelling our £30 order. I am still so gobsmacked, there are simply no words. I won't be going back there, that's for sure.

Tenshi was an unexpected surprise on bland Upper St. - with an extraordinarily expansive menu, from sushi/sashimi to bentos and beyond (if you've visited Japan all your favourites will be there - tako-yaki, agedashi tofu, tendon, ika geso age, kaki fry etc - well, all my favourites anyway!). What is more, all dishes were accomplished and deemed 'very authentic' by my Japanese partner (who is by no means easy to impress). In fact, he suggested going back in the evening very soon (truly unheard of!) as alongside its great food, Tenshi feels like a real Japanese Izzakaya with a wide range of beers/wines/sakes to match. For our family, Tenshi will be now provide a good alternative to Akari on Essex Road....and really deserves to succeed, in my opinion.

Not too good for a real Japanese restaurant. They need to raise their standards although it must be hard to find good full-time Japanese chefs these days because of new strict immigration laws.

Spicy tuna was too spicy, I couldn't taste the tuna at all. Was disturbed also by conversations from the kitchen about anime.

However good value for money, I should continue supporting.

We visited on a Thursday night. We ate upstairs and one of party knew the owner so we met him to. Nice guy who had a vision. and made it so!

The food was good, we had a selection of things including sea urchin. That was a bit scary and orange for me so I bottled it, my dining companions hoovered it up however saying it was excellent.

Pork Katsu was perfect, sashimi and sushi were bite sensations, soft shelled crab was good, subtle and light and we also scoffed through some pancakey type things which I forget the name of but were v tasty

Everything was great, though I'm no purist it all seemed very, well, real Japanese. Dinner for 3 with a bottle of wine, teas and couple of beers was only £90. Not bad at all.

Loved it and the place deserves to succeed. We'll be back.

I am surprised by the reviews complaining about the food and the service. I've eaten here twice since it opened and really enjoyed everything I ordered - the sashimi was fresh and good quality fish and the soft shell crab rolls and chicken teriaki were delicious. The Japanese waitresses were perfectly pleasant. It does all feel very new, and perhaps it's still finding its feet a bit, but they will soon be opening an upstairs area (it's very small at the moment) and getting a liquor licence (it's currently bring your own). I would definitely recommend this place and hope it's here to stay - it is considerably better than the standard offerings on Upper Street.

We visited this restaurant a couple of weeks ago and whilst the food was good, the service was a bit slow. We decided to try it out again yesterday, and were pleased to find that the service was much quicker and the food was even better than last time. Everything seemed to work very smoothly and we had a very enjoyable supper. Worth a visit.

Wednesday, February 10, 2010 - I liked Tenshi's spicy tuna rolls. Nothing special. Just honest. Service is prompt and efficient, or at least it was when I was there. The atmosphere is VERY basic. This is really more of a take-out place. The good news about that, though, is they'll be open ALL the time...You can also have chicken katsu whenever you want, and this was a fine example. I'd eat it again. Good panko crust. I still like chicken katsu curry better, though. The Verdict: (Relatively) cheap fun. I'm sure I'll be back many times.
