what the critics say

The Independent

Tracey MacLeod - 8/15

Saturday, February 20, 2010 - Main courses are reasonably priced and generally well put together, if unexciting. Spatchcocked poussin, grilled with lemon and thyme, was over-reliant on a heavily reduced Madeira jus to supply interest. Confit of pork belly similarly fell short on the flavour front; all the fat had been cooked off, leaving the meat bland under its carapace of crackling...If you were a resident, you'd probably be delighted to find a restaurant this good downstairs. But as a destination in its own right, it hasn't quite found its USP.

This Is London

David Sexton - 2/5

Friday, January 29, 2010 - All our courses were fine. There's an 'all-day grazing menu' here, none too challenging in concept, with Caesar salad, fish pie, steak and chips, and pizzas. But the delivery, under head chef Shane Pearson, formerly at the Electric Brasserie, is polished and professional...The Arch aims to deliver 'London Townhouse living', the mantra of all new, would-be fashionable hotels. But at the moment, the place feels a little too fussy and effortful for that atmosphere to come off, for actual Londoners at any rate. Dean Street Townhouse remains the benchmark, showing how much cooler this style can be.

Lovely new hotel with plush bar to match. Excellent cocktails and pleasant, if not entirely clued-up, service.

The food is good. Simple dishes for the most part but quality ingredients treated with the care they deserve. Dishes from the grill seemed most successful. Good for those who are quite happy with a fish pie or burger in smart surroundings.

We felt that prices were perhaps higher than they should be for what is essentially a hotel restaurant, but this IS W1 after all and I notice they have now added a sample 'prix fixe' menu to their website which should make it more accessible.

Would return, although probably for a business lunch or quiet pre-theatre rather than a food-focused evening.

A Forkful of Spaghetti

A Forkful of Spaghetti

Thursday, March 04, 2010 - The place is beautifully furnished and blessedly quiet which helps hugely in making it a great spot to have tea...And the eclairs? Perhaps my marginal preference would be for the crab and creme fraiche combo, if only because it had the added novelty factor. The filling was delightful - distinctly charged with crab, but prevented from being too much of a good thing by the lemony creme fraiche. But the sweet eclairs were no less enjoyable - the addition of green tea in the chocolate and green tea version helped cut through the chocolate to produce a mellow and low-level chocolate hit, while the Amalfi lemon eclair was fresh and zingy.
