This Is London

David Sexton - 2/5

Thursday, April 01, 2010 - Not having just returned from a day-long wintry hike, we passed on the fondues. From the choice of five Tartes Flambees, an Alsacien version of a pizza, we had La Forestiere at 8.40 - a good, thin and crisp bready base, covered with softened onions and cream, plus tasty bacon lardons and wild mushrooms, albeit oddly salty. As a meal in itself, this would be satisfying and a bargain.

Sunday, March 28, 2010 - The fondue Savoyarde (a mix of Emmenthal and Beaufort with Comte) sounded serviceable, and we very much liked the toasted, seasoned croutons for dipping. But the fondue itself was a dismal affair, starting with the moment when they poured on the kirsch and set fire to it. Flambeed cheese? "It's under-seasoned," Pat said. "They've rubbed the pot with too much garlic, and it's separated." She was right. A glassy layer of liquid lay atop the molten cheese, and the flavour was shallow and dull.

Came to this place as had read the reviews and it completely exceeded our expectations . The munster croquettes starter were delicious and great size portions . The charming waiter and waitress were helpful with the wines and really smiley. We had the Tarte flambee which was lovely - crisp base and lots of topping and not anywhere like your typical "pizza" - we also had a tartflette with chicken and plump morels - again delicious . Even though we were completely full we had to try the cheese ice cream - this was original and totally more-ish . Although not cheap , the price was reasonable for the quantity and quality and the service was perfect. Lovely romantic atmosphere . Definitely one of my London favourites !

If you love real french food you'll love this restaurant. Small and perfectly formed it delivers wonderful and unpretentious traditional food. The menu is not massive but it is the only menu I have seen in years where I literally want to eat every single thing on it. We have now been there four times working through the menu and so far have been impressed by every dish. There is a predominance of cheese dishes, as one would expect, but the non cheese dishes such as snails for first course and the main of lamb and ratatouille were also delicious.

Service was quick and friendly but unobtrusive.

I am so happy this restaurant has appeared, it has distinctly improved our local restaurant experience.

A Girl Has To Eat

A Girl Has To Eat - 8/10

Monday, May 17, 2010 - We chose the munster pane. This consisted of several pieces of munster cheese coated in breadcrumbs and deep fried to a melted gooeyness. It was accompanied by some velvety smooth Bayonne ham and a beautifully dressed salad...From the tartiflette section we chose la jurassienne, a guinea fowl, Comte cheese and mushroom ragout combination. The guinea fowl was beautifully cooked, succulent and moist, and the potatoes gave way to that rustic flavour combination of ham, cheese and onion. The mushroom ragout, incorporating a variety of mushrooms such as ceps and girolles, was accomplished.

Cheese and Biscuits

Cheese and Biscuits - 7/10

Wednesday, February 17, 2010 - The Main Event was a Fondue Savoyarde, a mixture of Emmenthal, Comte and Beaufort cheeses presented theatrically with a flaming dose of kirsch liqueur. The bread was nicely toasted, only occasionally falling apart in the mixture, and the flavours of the cheeses really did create an interesting cocktail. Desserts were very French, and very good. Creme brulee was rich and creamy and served with not only a nice vanilla ice-cream but some gorgeous homemade lemon curd. The Ille Flotante was ethereally light.
