what the critics say
Sunday, May 09, 2010 - My 'new yorico jumbo all-beef hot dog' is as much of a mouthful as its title. The attendant fried onions are melting, the bun is nicely, unhealthily soft and white and, once it has been dressed with the ketchup and mustard from a heap of tabletop condiments, it does taste pretty authentic...And so, with regret, to the burgers. The buns are small, seeded and a bit flimsy. The crispy bacon on the BLT and Rodeo burgers is anything but. The size, modest. The taste, meh...Nevertheless I like this place. The staff are genuinely helpful and the menu does have range beyond what's expected of a fast-food joint.
Monday, March 15, 2010 - The burgers? Disappointing. Not bad, just disappointing. We really wanted to like the food, as the place was a hoot, with its groovy colours and heavily bearded waiter. But a limp patty is a limp patty, and a dull bun can't be disguised by sprinkling it with linseeds. Crinkle-cut chips were a big thing in the early 1970s, and here they've been revived in all their pale, pre-fab glory. The alternative was sweet potato fries, which would have been better if they'd not been served lukewarm.
Guerilla Burgers
Checked this new place out as a short walk from my office and liked the look of menu. But wow what a complete let down. Overcooked burger with weird looking bun and the fries tasted like oven chips. I also love onion rings but these ones were the usual frozen ones. Service was smiley though!

Guerilla Burgers
Just opened today on the site of an old Tootsie's. Owned by the same people who run Giraffe. Quite similar to Gourmet Burger Kitchen, but with full table service. The food is nicer and better value.
Ordered a simple cheeseburger and chips. Ingredients on the burger were fresh and nice. Burger itself tasty, cooked fairly rare, pink inside. Nice flavour. The meat is much larger than the bun and has a touch of mayonnaise, making it slide around, a messy eat. Chips were cooked well, crispy and about the right portion size, although I think they were reformed rather than from the potato. Good value for £7 total. They also gave me a free coffee, which was very very strong. It literally gave me a bout of heart arrythmia.
The decor is bold, playful and slightly childish in cuban red, white, blue and black. The name and the concept don't make sense - what has selling and eating burgers got to do with guerilla revolutionaries? Commercial subversion of feelgood socialist populism, to fit the recession? More like David Cameron cycling to work than anything to do with Castro. Just a bit of fun. I wonder how well they pay their workers...
Other items on the menu that looked good included a variety of burger fillings, sweet potato fries, hotdog (huge and only £5). Fish tacos sound good. Espresso only £1.
Waiting staff were prompt and timing was ok, around 12 minutes. They were all pretty friendly, and there were plenty of them. Obviously trying hard on opening day!
It would appeal particularly to families with young children, whether good or bad, like Giraffe. Would be pretty good for a casual bite with a couple of friends.

what the bloggers say
Londonelicious
Tuesday, March 09, 2010 - When the very social-media savvy Guerilla Burgers popped up on Twitter and promised burgers AND fish tacos, well, I couldn't not respond to their oh-so-tempting offer...The burgers were pretty cute. I wanted to like them. So you can probably guess what happened. I didn't like the burgers. They were dry. They were hard. They lacked flavor. On the other hand, I liked the sweet potato fries. Being partly Floridian, I eat a lot of sweet potatoes. I don't think they get enough table time in this country.
Cheese and Biscuits - 2/10
Tuesday, February 23, 2010 - Only with the arrival of the burger itself did events take a serious downturn. First of all, that bloody bun. It would be bad enough if they had just stuck with the floury buns from the Facebook photos, inauthentic and dull though they are. But instead, my patty came inside what looked like a sourdough muffin that someone had spilled Bran Flakes on. It was chewy and dense, fighting with and providing no sweet counterpoint to the (admittedly rather nicely cooked and seasoned) beef. Pickles looked like they had been sliced quite a long time previously, and were shrivelled and chewy. Salad was a salad.
Dos Hermanos
Wednesday, February 17, 2010 - The main event served in silver trays, was presented with some ceremony by the lovely wait staff, but the sight of a seeded bun did not augur well. The walls of the restaurant were covered with praises of the perfect burger, which makes the insipid efforts that were placed in front of us all the more disappointing. The meat is cooked medium but was dry and tasteless...Milkshakes were teriffic, creamy and thick and the service was efficient and a total delight, if slightly over eager on the first day.
