Wednesday, March 10, 2010 - Towpath is a new venture from esteemed Italian-American food writer Lori De Mori and her husband, the equally esteemed food photographer Jason Lowe. It's right next to the towpath on an unglamourous stretch of the Regent's Canal just off Kingsland Road...Lunch dishes are very Italian in outlook and are strongly ingredient-led - cavolo nero on toast, celeriac soup. A grilled cheese sandwich was made with Montgomery's cheddar and came with an unusual quince-and-chilli jelly with the consistency of honey; pork rillettes were smooth and flavoursome and matched with vivid, chunky piccalilli.

Moved to write first review here by the stunning meal I've just eaten at the Towpath.

The food here is to be tasted to be believed.

I just had the juiciest cumin lamb, the most stunning spiced cauliflower and delicious crispy chickpeas. It was an incredible combination. No exaggeration.

I was swearing so effusively my mate ended up trying some of it and he totally agreed, so both of us sat there, firing out enthusiastic expletives for the food. It was actually probably the best meal I've had all year. The only thing that comes close was a meal I had at Bistro Bruno Loubet.

OK I'm gushing, but it was sensational grub, the type you rarely find in London and my mate and I both agreed we'd still feel we got a spectacular meal if we'd have had to pay twice what they charged.

The lady chef there is a great talent given thats what she knocks out for lunch! Wow.

This beautiful, warm little caf.. or canal-side bar is the perfect example of how well off we are in London for good food these days.

I can't think of anywhere in NY Paris or Milan half as cool, where you can also eat fantastically (hot lamb broth full of rich meat and veg and pearl barley/ Glass of rhubarb jelly with real vanilla custard on top), in such a friendly atmosphere (whole family seem to help with the running of this place-and enjoy it) for amazing value. Think about £8 for lunch with a thick delicious coffee to end it.

What...??? They must be doing it for love...!!!

Monday, December 13, 2010 - Polenta, Parmesan and New Season Olive Oil: We needed this. It was served piping hot, thick, soupy, porridge-like in texture. But it was beautiful, so warming, and so tender as it went down. The parmesan was genius, the sharpness teased out the sweetness of corn, but it was the olive oil that had stimulated the palate...There is something about Towpath that makes it special. Something about the combination of location, the concept and the modest, homely style cooking. Ultimately, I think that the reason why Towpath is loved, is because it feels, human.
