Sichuan Restaurant

After having lunch with my friends, I tried to pay with my credit card, but the waiter told me it's not working.
I handed him another card, but he said it's not working either and told me (actually ordered me) to go to nearby Sainsbury and withdraw cash if I don't have cash. I asked him to check if his machine is OK, and he kept saying my cards have problem. I made him try my friend's card, but it failed again. (Meanwhile, a lady of another table came to pay, tried her card, failed, and paid cash) He kept saying the machine had no problem last night, so I have to pay in cash. What kind of attitude is this!!?? After 5 minutes, manager came, and magically the card machine worked!!! And I never heard 'I'm sorry' from both of them!!!

It was a somewhat strange experience it has to be said. Then again went there as a family of 4 for a quick meal before our film. The cinema is almost next door. A distant service, no exactly friendly, but then again not hostile. The restaurant could do with a good clean up (no excuse not to because the bucket and mop where visibly seen in the restaurant. It was kinda like a Chinese Fawlty Towers. Mr and Mrs were screaming at each other in the kitchen whilst preparing our meals). I have to say I had difficulty understanding the menu because it was in Chinese without much explanation in English. A few Chinese diners, so this lulled us into a false sense of security. Unusual menu so let’s just say it was authentic. I don’t think I would go back again (at least not at 6pm perhaps much later in the evening). Not sure what to think of the food, it was cheap, it was plentiful, it came in chipped crockery. We did ask the owner/manager to take a photo of this strange experience and I think he was overwhelmed that we should want to remember the experience. Mind made up, I will return again if I go to watch a movie at the Odeon Bugsby Way.

Food here is generally very good by London standards as long as you know what to order. Many Westerners fall into the trap of going for stripped out set menus and the standard sweet and sour rubbish. The food tends to be quite spicy. They have a Chinese menu as well as an English menu. Apart from the a la carte there is also the option for Hot Pot (search if you do not know). The majority of diners are Chinese and unfortunately quite a lot are actually students which does drag down the atmosphere of the place and tarnishes it with a relatively cheap feel. That being said the food was delicious and the quantity is insane to the amount that 4 of us could not even dent the 5 dishes we ordered due to the massive quantity. The price is also below typical London fare.
