what the critics say

Metro

Marina O'Loughlin - 2/5

Tuesday, June 07, 2011 - Most of what we eat is good enough. Decent, if improperly trimmed asparagus with fine, buttery hollandaise; anodyne tuna cut into perfectly symmetrical strips and given character with sesame oil, coriander and chilli. A Titchmarsh of a burger: by no means unpleasant but entirely unmemorable. There's a cloying, vanilla-rich cheesecake that I leave half of - and I've never been known to abandon a cheesecake...The shop in East Sussex was the real deal: naturally evolved, run by an individual, a stranger to the stylist. The roll-out is the polar opposite. A corporation-managed machine masquerading as something warm and loveable.

The Independent

Tracey MacLeod - 9/15

Saturday, January 15, 2011 - Surrounded by esoteric food-stuffs, we worked our way through a pretty average meal. Fried calamari rings, under-seasoned and served with a garlic dip that put the 'meh' into mayo. A mulch of chorizo and tomato on chargrilled bread which called to mind pasta sauce on toast. A prawn curry that was no more than curry sauce on rice, topped with a few chargrilled prawns; chicken paillard with spring onion mash, and a burger distinguished only by its glossy brioche bun. All perfectly OK, and not unreasonably priced, with starters around 5 quid, and mains 8-11.50, but nothing special.

We came here on 30th December for lunch - my sister was very excited to stumble across this as she loves going to Bills in Brighton when she comes to visit me. The decor is lovely, very similar to the Brighton store but without any fruit or veg. It wasn't very busy but I guess this is because it hasn't established itself yet and, once word gets around, it will be much better once there's a real buzz here with lots of people.

Instead of going for my usual favourites of Eggs Benedict or Veggie Breakfast (real big hits in our household at the Brighton branch!), I chose the Bubble and Squeak with Ham, Fried Eggs and Hollandaise Sauce and my sister chose the Eggs Royale.

We weren't in a hurry but did notice at least a couple of tables who came in after us got their food first. My Bubble and Squeak was delicious - lovely combinations. My sister's Eggs Royale was almost perfect... the poached eggs were ice-cold (I suspect they pre-cook them and put them on ice then plunge into boiling water to serve but had forgotten to do the last bit). The dish was taken away with great apologies and a new one was cooked - my sister said it tasted great. They also offered to take my dish away and cook me a new one so we could eat at the same time but there was no way I was letting mine go!

I would definitely recommend Bills to anyone!

After seeing a good review we decided to check Bill's out as we were in the Covent Garden area. It's tucked slightly back in St Martin's Court so you will not just fall upon it. Hunting it down is worth the effort as this cafe-deli is a real treat.

An entertaining mix of old fashioned tables, school chairs and storage racks crossed with modern industrial heating ducts, a wrought iron staircase and many other features gives this establishment a different feel from your normal cafe.

Excellent garlic bread (with character). A delicious BLT and skin-on chips, (Oh,

what a joy to taste propper chips)! The tea comes out in a big red enamel pot -

nice touch. A great experience with friendly attentive staff and warm atmosphere .
