what the critics say

The Independent

Saturday, November 06, 2010 - The mains were electrifying. Angie's roast fillet of cod with celeriac and anchovy sauce drew cries of rapture. 'It's rare to find a piece of cod so fresh and delicious you could eat it by itself, but the celeriac goes with it so beautifully, it's overwhelming.'...My veal chop, slow-roasted for ages with bay leaves and juniper berries, was wondrous, a big butch steak on a bone the size of a handlebar. But the highlight of my dish was the fennel - sliced in half and slow-braised until it was sweet and melting.

Saturday, October 16, 2010 - My wife, having ordered a dish with sausage, felt that she wanted it to be more overtly sausagey. I could see her point. This is restaurant food, a refined, polished take on a cuisine that I prefer in its more rustic and domestic form. I know I'm veering dangerously near saying that the problem with Tinello is that it is too accomplished. I felt something similar about Locanda Locatelli after my only visit there. Other dishes were very good: brill with a broth of onions, clams and borlotti beans; roast baby chicken with spicy potatoes; and a lovely, not too sweet white chocolate and hazelnut semifreddo served with cocoa sauce.

We decided to go to Tinello after a friend from Italy suggested it to us. You should know the Italians are very picky about their food.

The restaurant deco is great very cozy and relaxed, service attentive and not too intrusive.

Food is not sophisticated but very very tasty we had incredible tubular pasta with Burrata cheese and spicy sausage...the main was also delicious, fillet of plaice with beans and mussel. Dessert was equally good, lemon mousse with Sharon fruit.

The wines are good and fairly priced.

I could go back to Tinello any give day.

Truffle delusion!

We paid a lot of money for 'pasta al tartufo' £45 each dish and it was a great delusion, not tasty at all, AT ALL. Much much better a simple tomato pasta!

All the rest was fine and the people are very kind and professional. What a shame! I feel stupid now, having paid all that money for nothing!

Food was delicious! Highlights were the incredible chicken liver crostini and the Cod.. the small eats reminded me of the food I had in Tuscany, by far the best truly Italian food in London. We also had the pork cheek ragu which was sensational and then topped it all off with a perfect cheese selection.

I don't expect everyone to agree with me but Tinello's wine list is outstanding for value and choice. Can't ask for more.

I look forward to go back to Tinello soon.

I am a fan of this little restaurant! On my last visit on tuesday night we had small eats to share: ham, burrata, chiken liver crostini.. so many to choose from and all sounded so delicious! After that I had the saltinbocca (veal with a slice of Tuscan ham and sage) whilst my dinner companion had Turbot with broadbeans and prawns. Both dishes were perfectly cooked and faultless, the combination of textures and flavours was really spot on.

We shared a pecorino cheese with honey and fig mustard for dessert to finish offour bottle of Tignanello, recommended by our sommelier, beautiful wine and very fairly priced (compared to other london restaurant)

Service was attentive and spotless as usual, informal but always prompt.

Loved it and will be back soon!

I dont get it. This was some of the most uninspiring Italian food ive eaten. The room is nice, the serivce attentive but the night we visited they must have run out of salt. I went with two friends. one of our party was a professionally trained chef and two were judges for an industry food award. All three of us had to use salt on our pasta which was a first for all of us. Not a hint of seasoning and the pasta had been cooked in unsalted water. For main course the salt baked sea bream had apparently been cooked in salt but managed to be as bland and unseasoned as the starter. The menu described it as coming with saffron potatoes but it came it what looked like a florescent soup, impossible to eat with the knife and fork supplied not that you would want to as it tasted like it looked. The pork chop was said to be very good but the chard it was served with had not been washed properly and contained grit. The Maitre D' admitted that the "potato" description was perhaps a little misleading and removed the fish from the bill. I went with high hopes because of the restaurants pedigree and reputation but left very disappointed. Maybe if they get a salt delivery and a menu rewrite things will improve.

Charming staff, fun decor, delicious food. The starters may lack imagination if you go for salumeria, but also lots of traditional little treats like liver crostini are well executed delicious old favourites.

A mix of mainstream and more imaginative delicious and well executed main courses, a menu that is likely to please everybody. I´m a fan!

Wow, so my first visit may have been marred by my alcohol consumption, my second, most undoubtedly was not. This restaurant, the food, service, atmostphere is impeccable. I cannot speak highly enough of this restaurant.

This restuarant is now my #1 choice for any special occasion. I have been to many top London eateries, few come close. So if you are lucky enough to get a table, sit back, relax and enjoy you are in for a treat.

Cant wait to come back (again)!

Food was delicious! Highlights were the incredible chicken liver crostini.. the small eats reminded me of the food I had in Positano (some of the best I have ever eaten!) . I had the pork cheek ragu which was sensational and then topped it all off with a perfect tiramisu .. think we were there for about 4 hours ( and had way too much Brunello di Montalcino) .. really enjoyed it and will be back from more!

I have just came back from a fantastic lunch at Tinello. We were welcomed by the restaurant manager and promply sat at the table. We ordered a selection of the small eats including deep fried baby squid and they there were the most delicious fried squid I ever tasted.

I had the broad beans ravioli and my companion had the risotto with vin santo wine and we could not find any fault with both dishes. My main special was a sea salt baked cornish seabass and it was sublime and was well accopanied by a nice glass of arpeggio white wine (house wine) which was also a great value for money. We skipped the dessert as we were full. Coffee was excellent and service was charming and attentive, Great place to have lunch! Loved the food and the decor.Higly reccomended.

An American In London

An American In London

Thursday, October 28, 2010 - Things got a little rocky when it came to mains and desserts at Tinello. In fairness to the restaurant, we didn't try any of the meat or fish courses, and instead we stuck to the pastas, which turned out to be nothing special. My pumpkin ravioli was by far the best pasta ordered at the table that evening, and although there were a few too-large-and-therefore-too-tough chunks of pumpkin lurking in the ravioli, overall, I enjoyed the pasta. Gourmet Chick's gnudi wasn't the fluffy-fresh ricotta-gnocchi fest I was expecting. It tasted like loose filling swimming in olive oil, which wasn't appealing.

Gourmet Chick

Gourmet Chick - 6/10

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 - The small plates were the best part of the meal, with a cracking calamari and chickpea stew served with triangles of fried bread. The crostini of toasted bread slathered in chunky chicken liver pate was rustic, hearty and a bargain to boot...Tinello had a nice feel to it, and I enjoyed the honest approach to cooking and the fact that the range of ingredients used goes a step beyond the standard fare served at most Italian restaurants in London. However, the cooking was very uneven and for me, this factor teamed with fairly poor service when confronted with a dish that was below par, meant I left feeling a little disappointed as to what could have been.

Dos Hermanos

Dos Hermanos

Wednesday, August 11, 2010 - The food itself was a bit like the restaurant: lacking excitement, a bit polite, and a bit careless in execution...Fried Zucchine were limp although not as greasy as the cuttlefish. Thick sliced Salami and Prosciutto weren't bad at all and went well with some sweet, cold melon. The pasta course was much better. Thick tubular pasta was cooked properly and combined with a rich, smoky sauce made from Nduja, a sort of sausage from Calabria. The whole was topped off with a blob of creamy Burrata cheese. There was plenty of good-tasting stuff going on here but the proportions were a bit out of whack.
