our review

The team from the ever-popular Cafe Japan have opened a new ultra-healthy sushi cafe in Golders Green. Alongside the classics, there are unusual sushi cakes and temari (sushi balls) to eat in or take-away. Soy sauce is banned (too much salt) so try the teriyaki, basil or spicy sesame alternatives.

TimeOut - 3/5

Wednesday, September 15, 2010 - As the emphasis here is on temari - hand-rounded balls - you'll find less raw content than at a typical nigiri sushi bar. This is in keeping with a traditional Kyoto style that uses cooked, cured or marinated toppings; their inherent flavours make it possible to do away with dipping shoyu, as 'Chef Miho' has done, in order to reduce salt levels...Spend 80p a pop and you can upgrade to miso mozzarella, flaked salmon, marinated tuna or sweet prawn. They are such dainty bite-sized confections it's almost a shame to sink teeth into them but don't miss out on the tang of umeboshi (sour plum) paste atop tender diced squid.

Really love the food at this place - the standard of presentation and taste are incredible when you consider the price (temari sushi from 30p!!) It's great to have some modern, progressive Japanese cuisine in London - the health cups and the sushi cake take the whole concept of sushi into a completely new, delicious arena - this is a perfect place to grab a quick lunch or takeaway order, but I imagine that they will also get loads of demand for their party platters, as I don't think I've ever seen sushi presented in such a beautifully elegant fashion.

Definitely check this place out if you're in the area - Two thumbs up!!

Monday, November 22, 2010 - The temari selection felt rather like purchasing a box of luxury chocolates, or even a box of luxury macarons, in the way I hand picked the ones I wanted, and they have been meticulously packaged too...Most importantly, the combos were thrilling. Tuna, with a sancho pepper spiced rice got the endorphins sparking, gorgeous chopped brown mushrooms with a hint of garlic, like a pate on a rice ball. The beautifully sculpted marinated scallop with fish roe dipped in squid ink, mimicking the look of pricier caviar - I would have easily partly with more money to eat this sushi.
