Marina O'Loughlin - 3/5

Tuesday, September 07, 2010 - Refreshingly, there's none of the tacky, acid-coloured branding you get with faux-Mexican joints, rather a cool lime paint job butched up with concrete, rough wood and metal tables. It looks good and it's affordable...There are tacos with smoky chorizo, cheese and coriander, a huge plate of nachos (why not home-made?) with good guacamole, a rich pulp of black beans and marinated, seared beef. The little carousel of sauces is excellent: limey avocado; finely chopped, fiery pico de gallo; and wonderfully hot and fragrant molcajete. Elsewhere, I'm disappointed by wussiness on the flavour.

I ate here for dinner on a Friday evening on a table of four. Maybe Mexican food isn't particularly to my taste anyway, but I found everything I tried here very bland - no fire and certainly no flavour, not even in the Chorizo taco (which was more potato than Chorizo). The waiter tried hard, but spoke very fast with a strong accent so we struggled to understand half of what he said. Drinks orders seemed to confuse them, tap water took along time to arrive, and when one of our party asked for Cranberry juice she was told they don't have any, despite it being a listed ingredient in a non-alcoholic cocktail I had just drunk. We sat downstairs, on very uncomfortable seats, and many of the tables here (ours included) are between the ladies and gents toilets entrances, resulting in an almost constant waft of toilet block smells throughout our meal which detracted from an already fairly poor experience. There were tables upstairs, but we were told we would only have an hour on the table. I won't be returning here.

Went to Lupita, with friends, on the Thursday night prior to the Royal Wedding Bank Holiday.

Generally, the restaurant is good, but did have a bad experience regarding a dish that didn't turn up. The waitress had to check that the Brochetas Mixtas was still available and confirmed that there were a couple left.

When it didn't turn up, I was told that I wouldn't have been offered the brochetas, as there wasn't any left. After plenty of confusion and some arguing, I had my dishes and beers removed from the bill. None the less, it didn't make for a pleasant dining experience.

Really enjoyed my meal here, stumbled upon it by chance, but glad I did.

A really nice take on a cuisine that can so often be badly done.

Will certainly be going back, as soon as possible!

good location, nice place and friendly service, good drinks

too bad the food was so average. i won't be going back - everything was pretty bland or just didn't quite work. the guacamole, for example, was tasteless. the dishes generally small and lacking taste (too much break in everything - not enough stuffing). shame

EXCELLENT NIGHT(S) OUT. I am very surprised at some of the negative comments on this website. We are returning customers and have found the experience and food to be of a high standard. If you are tired of the hum drum national restaurant chains that appear on every high street and want freshly prepared authentic food you should give this place a try!

I discovered this jewel last Saturday. Had Guacamole (which I thought was as fresh as it can be) , Prawn Tacos (Governador?) and Carnitas... Absolutely delicious. Afterwards I discovered a Bar down stairs and had a couple of stiff Margaritas.

Definitely the best choice in the area.

Absolutely revolting. Black bean tortillas tasted of soot, chicken and prawn dishes were so dry they were inedible. Menu boasted that guacamole was 'made fresh every day', which is a ridiculous boast for a restaurant supposedly priding itself on fresh, authenthic Mexican food. Staff were surly and rude. Even though we left half our food, they didn't ask if there was anything wrong and were keen to get us out the door. Disgusting. Never again.

Just got home from Lupita's which we randomly picked for a bit of food after skating at Somerset House. Amazing service. Amazing food. Amazing price. Our waiter recommended house speciality 'Gringa' which was some kind of fabulously flavoured spiced pork on 3 small tortilla with cheese and pineapple....It was utterly superb, totally new and really very, very well put together..not to big, not too heavy, no overpowering stodge, mindblowing flavours and left just the right amount of room for a pudding....which was chunks of guava pulp with feta-esque cheese...again totally different, never had anything like it before but the tangy sweet of the guava and the svaoury saltiness of the cheese balanced perfectly. We had a bottle of the Malbec which was very nice and absolutely drinkable at only £15 per bottle. Husband got fully stuffed on a steak burrito and total bill (including service) came in at £28. Service was so good we left additional tip. Left feeling like we'd discovered treasure. In fact I don't know why I'm telling you about it.

great good, lack of beers was disappointing, worse thing is the stupdily small tables, for a restaurant where it is tapas style u need decent size tables, not this silly small ones

I have been to Lupita several times now and it has become one of my favourite restaurants in London. The food is tasty, fresh and varied. The service is efficient (I was suprised at how smoothly and quickly they handeled our table of 14 on a Saturday evening two weeks ago!) and friendly. It is also very affordable for Central London. The place suits all sort of casual situations: big or small groups of friends, a date or colleagues. And the fact that its usually packed probably confirms my view.

Cheese and Biscuits

Cheese and Biscuits - 5/10

Monday, February 21, 2011 - I did, thank God, enjoy two of the dishes. Chicharron was a huge sheet of baked cheese which you break chunks off to scoop up the excellent Guacamole underneath, and was enormous fun. The salty, crispy cheese made a perfect accompanyment to the soft rich guacamole, and although you'd hope to enjoy it for 7 quid, it was - unlike most of the other courses - interesting, tasty and generous in proportion...With a (nice enough) margarita each the bill came to 46 pounds for two, and although this isn't a fortune by London standards, it is quite a lot considering we left if not hungry then not full, and hardly impressed by much of what we ate.

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

Monday, September 13, 2010 - Tacos arrived first, corn and not flour (apparently flour tacos are for heathens). The taco pastor were sweet and juicy, with a delicious mix of slow cooked pork and bacon marinated in a huge variety of ingredients, ending up in a fruity concoction. These did not last long...Coming to just over 15 quid a head for the food, it was thoroughly excellent value. I looked over to the harshest judge of them all. She had been quite muted for most of the meal but she smiled and said that she would quite happily come back again.
