our review

The owners of PJ's Bar & Grill (Covent Garden) have opened a new restaurant on the former site of RED in Kentish Town. The head and sous chefs used to work at Vinoteca and Acorn House and promise to deliver 'great local food and drink'.

what the critics say

Times Online

Giles Coren

Saturday, October 16, 2010 - Simple things done well include grilled chorizo on lentils, the eggs Benedict, an excellent beefburger (soft floury bap, good meat, no frills, far better than any 'gourmet' hamburger chain), big juicy sardines on sourdough toast with roast tomatoes, fat chips, a good mid-priced plate of Spanish charcuterie, and any number of salads...The supper menu moves up half a level in fanciness and I dare say will appeal to all sorts of people who don't much fancy the shout and scrape and smell of the pub.

TimeOut

TimeOut - 4/5

Friday, October 15, 2010 - Some of chef John Cook's food is sensationally good. Eggs Benedict on the brunch menu was exemplary. On a separate visit, parmesan chicken - a breaded escalope - was tender and juicy within and crunchy without (no mean feat). A huge portion of wonderful vegetable soup featured a memorably flavourful broth. Accurately cooked steak came with addictively crisp, fluffy chips. Desserts and baking are fine, and nice touches - such as small pots of blue-chip Isigny butter - show careful attention to detail...Service is sweet and largely efficient. Expect great things of this new place.

Three of us visited Kentish Canteen this Friday for lunch.

The general setting is nice and inviting. We all had the £10 lunch special and portion sizes were ok. We asked for several things during the meal, i.e. condiments, which were never brought to us, and one of us ordered a medium rare burger which came as well done. Therefore, we thought that given the 'service', the Kentish Canteen should not automatically add 12.5% service charge if they cannot provide it.

The food was ok, and overall I would rate the place as average.

Had a brill roast at Canteen last night - lamb cooked to perfection with FRESH mint sauce --- delish. Lovely way to spend a Sunday night in a candle-lit setting with my partner and a bottle of red!

I ate here a few weeks ago. Whitebait to start - to share - was good and crispy and very tasty; can't say I remember the accompanying dip as being "lemon and paprika" (just had to look it up on their website) but definitely had no complaints about it at the time. Friend and I both had burgers for main and despite neither being cooked as we ordered (we asked for medium-rare; they were instead very definitely on the other side of medium) they were proper meaty burgers and ruddy delicious, even if the chip portion was a bit measly. Had a glass each of Picpoul which I was v pleased to find on the menu; and service was alright, smiley if a bit slow, especially when we wanted to pay. Speaking of which, I thought it was pretty reasonably priced - have paid several quid more for a burger in other bars/pubs/restaurants where they've not been half as good. All in all a generally tasty meal - not a fabulous culinary night out but a nice change from pub food; there were quite a few folk in there and the atmosphere was friendly, if not exactly buzzing. In my opinion definitely adds to the eating-out options in K Town.

Food fairly average, but have to admit that Kentish Town could do with more restaurants that can at least do average food, rather than the mediocre food that is mostly on offer in the high street. I found service a bit lacking though.

Have had the most delicious food and excellent service at Kentish Canteen in the past few months. They have really got their kitchen and service sorted now; the salads at the 'larder' are fresh and exciting; the Supper menu ranges from staples like fish and chips (no batter thank God) to roasted lamb rump but often I have a board of top quality Serrano ham and a glass of wine. The terrace is lovely - altho a little fumey from the traffic - I had a Pitcher of English Julep for an incredible price this afternoon!

Have to agree with the previous reviewer. This place is more style over substance. Given its relatively smart appearance it is sure to stand out in the otherwise dreary Kentish Town area. However, I feel the quality of the food and the meagre portions (i had the Butchers steak), just do not not do it for me. The front of house could also perhaps be a bit less matey - perhaps they don't realise that some people don't like being called 'darling'.

Prices may not be that high - but don't be fooled as the portion sizes are tiny. Fish 'n chips was interesting given that the fish was lacking batter and had not been deep fried. Fish was also not very fresh (indeed the same smell of the fish could be smelled in the restauant upon entering as well as in my jumper afterwards). There are a couple of fine gastro pubs around here that might be £5 or so more expensive for a main course, but are definitely more worthwile. This includes the Junction Tavern, which is just a 3 minute walk up Fortress Road.

Nice local restaurant. Ordered the wide bean humous (which came with crostini) - very tasty and smooth texture. Extra crostini were free of charge. Beef burger was fantastic, cooked to perfection. Salads were tasty (coconut and carrot, wild rice with sweet potato and feta) and plentiful. Fried chicken average. Apple dessert was average, banoffe was nice as was the thick chocolate pudding. Bill came to 50 pounds (including 12.5% suggested service) which is quite decent for the area and quality of the food. Will definetely return. Service was attentive and correct, atmosphere very pleasant.

I would just like to say what a great night we had on Thursday 2nd of December.

we were greated at the door by the manager Jonathan who had a personality that matched the venue. The staff were friendly and very knowledgeable about the food. I had the squid and my three quests had the mussels, amazing. we all had the butchers steak for our main course's and was recomended a bottle of Chimeres by our waitress which complemented the steaks well. we had a selection of desserts from the well presented food larder they have as you walk in. On the whole a great night was had by all and we will be back again.

Very disappointing if you are planning to take a baby or small child. No buggies are allowed in after 12.30pm, and although they have high-chairs, they are not baby friendly at all, getting very upset if your baby drops so much as a crumb. Not welcoming at all, we will not be going again.
