what the critics say

Guardian

John Lanchester

Saturday, January 08, 2011 - The cooking is excellent and the list of hits I had was almost as long as the list of dishes I tried - and it was a long list. Salad of chopped octopus; lamb chops flavoured with cumin; a beetroot dish that was like a hummus made out of borscht and spiked with feta and walnuts - that was great, and I say that as someone who doesn't like beetroot. The two stars of the meal were chiccarones - small squares of pork belly, again flavoured with cumin - and fried chickpeas, recommended by the waiter, which came with chopped tomatoes, chilli and coriander, and were a spicy, crunchy, compulsive treat.

Metro

Andy Lynes - 4/5

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 - There are two bite-sized jamon and chicken croquetas, deep fried to crisp perfection; a scattering of crunchy cubes of chicharrones Cadiz (slow-roasted pork belly with cumin and lemon) and four halves of patatas mojo (salt-crusted potatoes with green chilli and coriander sauce). There's not a duff dish...This may be the casual, buzzy restaurant of the moment but the efficient service, keen prices and cracking cuisine should ensure it'll be around for some time to come.

My friend and I arrived early Wednesday evening. As there were just us two, we were asked to sit at the bar. I had no problem with this but agree that the stools are pretty uncomfortable and as we were at the end, kept getting knocked by people as they walked by.

Service was quick. Sitting where we were, it was very easy to get attention and plates were cleared promptly.

Food was very nice. As you can see the guys cooking, you can tell that the dishes are simple. Portions are quite small but over the course of the evening, I actually got quite full.

I'm not sure that I would go back as I am struggling as I write to remember anything particularly outstanding but if you are passing by anyway, it's as good a place as any to eat.

The food is very nice. Problems that they need to sort out are their seating arrangements and attitude. Nobody minds sitting on high chairs at the bar if these are comfortable. However you would be more comfortable sitting on hot coals than at the seats at Morito. Also the whole policy of reserving tables for 3 people or more, which leads to all the tables being empty whilst everyone has to slouch it on the uncomfortable bar stools is rubbish. 12.5% service charge for a Tapas place is a joke and the tall dude who I guess is the proprietor needs to change his attitude. All in all the place & decor has the charme of an industrial building site. The saving grace is the food.

Pretty good food, but ludicrously uncomfortable seating and stark lighting. While I appreciate the utilitarian design, they could have made just a few more concessions to the comfort of one's backside.

Ate at Morito a couple of Saturday's ago. Love the laid-backness of the place. Dishes come as & when they're ready. Tiny plates of quite rich tasting food. The tomato bread was delicious. If you're the type of person who likes to try lots of little things rather than having a whole meal then this is the place for you. The beer they serve on tap is lovely too. Would definitely go again.

I'm a big fan of Moro which has never dissapointed me. Been twice to Morito and food was great, really good authentic and very well cooked tapas. The atmosphere was fantastic, and I liked eating at the bar and all being packed and a bit cramped - it all contributes to the tapas experience! However I was really disappointed that after waiting for an hour to be seated at the bar (got there at 8 and got a place at 9 o'clock) and spent £35 per head, they asked us to leave at 11 pm to give our seats to somebody else!!! Really left a bad impression on both my husband and I.

My wife and I had lunch at Morito on Saturday . The food was tasty and the service reasonably friendly except for the manager who directed us to the counter top rather than to a table. My wife who is 8 months pregnant requested that we sit at a table instead of on high stools which are a little difficult for her but we were told in no uncertain terms ''tables are for groups of 3 or more''. I couldnt be bothered discussing this but it showed a complete lack of care on his part so she suffered in dignity. Next time I wont be quite so understanding.

Stopped by for a drink and a bite to eat with some friends recently. Having been to Moro and loving it, I was happy to read that they'd set up this new branch in hopes of attracting a younger clientele with lower prices.

While the food was amazing, the portion sizes are tiny, even for tapas, and they come at a hefty price - about £4.50 for two tiny fried salt cod croquettes is not acceptable in my mind. Needing at least 5-6 dishes each to feel even reasonably satisfied, I would rather save my money and go next door to Moro where the value for money is indisputable.

Amazing flavours, but just too pricey for what you get. I feel a bit taken advantage of. Shame as I am a huge Moro fan.

Friday, February 11, 2011 - Morito is a lot of fun. The tapas are small and most are priced under 4 pounds per plate. The service was friendly, and most dishes I tried were excellent...Winners: Pepper potato and onion tortilla: The classic dish, and a good measure of the rest of the tapas to come, I think. Morito's had a good firm texture, creamy with potato, sweet from the peppers and onions, and finishing with a little chili kick. Quail's egg and jamon - Eggs and ham. It's salty; it's creamy. What's not to love? Its prettiness is icing on the cake. Spiced labneh with aubergine - tangy, rich labneh perfectly complemented the slightly-sweet-and-smoky aubergine.

Dos Hermanos

Thursday, September 16, 2010 - The balance in a dish of Butifarra with white Navarran beans was all wrong and with a big splodge of garlic aioli the dish ended up being a bit too greasy and the taste of the Catalan sausage was lost. The beans were beautifully creamy though and cried out for a little bit of bread to mop things up. Of the Montaditos (stuff on bread) the best was the little riff on brekkie: a couple of quail eggs with Jamon sitting on good Moro bread...Although the evening may have seemed like more like a sequence of misses than hits the quality of the ingredients were decent and nothing left a bad taste in my mouth.
