Zoe Williams - 7.5/10

Monday, November 08, 2010 - The fritters themselves were amusing, since I cannot envisage a lower ratio of crab meat to batter, but only the most uptight, looking-for-insult diner would ever mind, since the batter was nicer than almost anything you could ever taste. It was chivey with the faintest tang of cayenne, a beautiful deep golden colour, and a great texture - squidgy but light...The mussels were small, with cracked, uneven shells, such as a supermarket would probably toss out with the misshapen carrots. Imagine my surprise, then (you can see where this is going), when they tasted incredible.

Thursday, September 23, 2010 - It's homely kitchen table decor with interesting paintings, and novels and poetry scattered across the tables. But it's the good honest food that attracts. We hoovered up the crab fritters (crispy golden morsels of crabmeat, corriander and carrot served with an egg cup of sweet chilli sauce). And they do the best battered calamari and chips I've eaten (al dente rather than rubbery). There's an emphasis on nose-to-tail eating. If you're a bit of a prissy pescetarian, you might find the mixed seafood linguine with chunks of crab shell a bit raw. But the sauce was wonderfully spicy without taking your head off.

Lovely, lovely staff and a great relaxed atmosphere. It's BYO which is such a bonus. Food can be a bit mixed - there aren't proper chips unfortunately, just oven chip type things, which lets down a fish and chip meal quite a lot, but someone else in my party had a fabulous seafood curry that was extremely generous with lovely ingredients. Deserves to be popular for its friendly staff and good value meals.

We visited Etta's last Saturday night with our foodie pal Kate who was looking for a venue in Brixton "Village" to host this months gathering of the supper club. We had decided to give Etta's a trial run as it is one of the few eateries which allows you to reserve a table which was going to be pretty essential as we planned to return later this month on a Friday night with a party of ten.

We rolled up at the "Village" around 8pm to find that despite the looming recession, and traditional New Year slump, most places were full of folk and business appeared to be booming all around. Etta's was packed to the rafters with every table full, including the tables outside which would be on the chilly side, apart from the one we had reserved.

Despite the fact the room was packed we received a very warm welcome and we were soon seated with menus and happily downing the wine we had purchased in the nearby off licence in Coldharbour Lane (this is a bring your own booze place with no corkage which makes for a very happy wallet).

Don't want to say too much from here on in as Etta's was a place that I really wanted to like and I had started off the evening keen to return but it just didn't deliver. I'm hoping it was just a one off bad night but we tried a wide selection of the food on offer including the mussel pot and crab fritter (someone forgot the crab) starters and three different mains and none of the dishes even made the average grade.

Having said that the room had a great, laid back but buzzy atmosphere. The service was very "Brixton" - friendly, chilled and unhurried. Despite our disappointment with the meal our bill was very reasonable so there were no hard feelings as we left a couple of hours later.

I plan to return next month to give Etta's another go as the concept is great, the people seem lovely and it really deserves to succeed (and probably will do whatever I think).

Visited on 16th March whilst doing my shopping for a quick lunch. The atmosphere was nice so we sat outside. We ordered lunch which was reasonable priced so decided to have a couple of things. The Sprats and baked Snapper were great and had Cod bites & chips for £4.00. It came quickly and the staff were attentive. I also tried a Sorrel juice which I have never heard of but was very refreshing. My sister had the ginger beer which is also made fresh.

They also open late some evenings which was suprising as its in the arcade and I plan to go back to try out there mains.

Came here for a quick supper rather than head up west.

It was a thursday night and it was packed. Had to wait for a corner table, staff were very helpfu and attentive.

I had the Mixed seafood curry. Which was tasty and with the mussels and king prawns a real handful. Luckily I have been brought up well and know how to deflower seafood.

My co diner eat the pan fried fish with steamed veg. The healthier option. If you fancy a blowout you can have Rice´n´ Peas or Chips. I had a yummy chocolate dessert too.

Advice sheet. 1] if winter wear a warm jumper. 2] be prepared to use the finger bowl after eating :-) 3] Save a little time to pop around the stalls and shops of Brixton Village
