what the critics say

Guardian

Jay Rayner

Sunday, October 30, 2011 - A king-crab cocktail had lots of pearly fresh meat, as it should do at 15 quid a pop. Steamed sea bass with a silky aubergine puree heavy with cumin was a very precise piece of cookery, and a grilled veal chop would have been a marvel if only it had been allowed to rest properly. A dessert of cinnamon and ricotta fritters was hot and sugary and naughty. Too many other things weren't good enough. Sticky tamarind chicken wings had the thrill of being dirty food served up by the classy Ramsay, until we realised they were no better than the sort you'd buy when completely bladdered from some gnarly KFC knock-off joint in Dalston. And the mark-up! Five small second joints for 8 quid.

Metro

Marina O'Loughlin - 3/5

Wednesday, October 19, 2011 - Yes, there's the odd heart flutter at two fine, barrel-shaped medallions of rosy venison, cleverly paired with sour cherries and a velvety pool of celeriac puree. And so-now sides of macaroni cheese and a fresh, creamy-crunchy slaw are excellent, as are tamarind chicken wings tasting of real tamarind, tangy, jammy and crisp. But there's a lot not to love: what's described on the menu as 'oven-baked burrata, heritage tomatoes and onion tart' delivers something entirely different: oven-dried tomatoes on pastry, a measly hummock of good, creamy, uncooked cheese and no onion. A veal chop, served pleasingly pink, is weirdly truncated and misshapen, as though it's had a slab shaved off to appease the bottom line.

Booked for an evening meal, to try Gordon's new restaurant and have to say it matched all other experiences we have had at many of his other restaurants, 3 course meal for two with a bottle of wine £120! Which we think is ok when you consider it's location! Food was great, service good if at times maybe a little slow,

Cheers Mr R!!

What a disappointment. The venue was large, noise and uncomfortable. The food was excessively expensive (Starters £6 - £15.00), and not good quality. I ordered the veal, at £24.00 for just the meat (side dishes were an additional £4 each) and was unable to cut the meat, let alone chew or swallow it! I told the waitress it was horrible and tough, she took it away and bought the same piece of meat back about 10 minutes later - the chef had cooked it a bit longer and returned it to me!! Guess what, it was still tough and inedible! The head waitress eventually came to the table and I told her again the issue, she took my food away and removed the charge from the bill and offered me a free dessert. Mine was not the only dish returned, 3 out of 8 dishes were returned.

The house red wine was great, at £17.50 per bottle.

Ate here tonight with 5 friends and have to say we left feeling rather disappointed. Firstly, whilst sitting in the bar waiting for our table, there was no waiter to take our drinks order. When I went to the bar to order, a service charge was added to the bill- when I questioned this, I was told this was standard but if I had a problem with it, the manager could take it off. Meanwhile, a celebrity was sitting behind us and the manager went out of his way to be of service. We sat down half an hour late with no apology from the manager, in fact he simply said 'enjoy guys!' Food was very good, I had the bass to start followed by the poussin, both delicious. But the service is a let down, our sides arrived late and the staff seemed a little confused. It lacks the personal touch, there seems to be no pride taken in what the staff are doing. I would also say the music is a little too loud, difficult to have a conversation with a big group of you. Maybe these are teething problems, but with a reputation to safeguard, I would expect Mr Ramsay to be more on the ball.

Just had lunch here and have to say it was brilliant. The big man himself was at the pass, he warmly greeted us as we were shown to our table, taking the time to shake hands. Food was superb, atmosphere worked well, I follow the argument that it's New York industrialised style in a brand new build so a bit odd and certainly not authentic but despite this it looks good. As for price, again many saying it is over priced, sorry I just don't agree. In fact we made the comment over lunch that it seemed relatively cheap. Looking at the number of packed seats people don't seem phased by price. Service was slick, quick and efficient. I will certainly be back, once I've worked this lunch off!

The service I couldn't fault. Big shout out to Fernando who made our visit special.

The food, both starter and main, were fantastic. I had the crab pasta to start and it was gorgeous. The venison I had for main was the most tender venison I have had. A fantastic meal with great side chips (fat chips, crispy), honey glazed carrots and nutmeg spinach.

It's not cheap. But I can't really fault it.

Booked in for a table for 5 people @ 4pm Saturday 1st Oct (to celebrate a birthday). We were shown to a table for 4, and instead of moving us to one of the many empty tables - they squeezed us round the small table. No drinks menu was offered and a very 'reduced' food menu was produced (despite other diners eating from the 'full' menu.) After 15 mins - still no drinks - and our waiter unable to tell us exactly what we could and could not eat - we gave up and left.

There were more staff than customers and still the basics were not met. Beware the so called 'Afternoon Menu' - it's tragic.

Thumbs down from our party of 5. We went round the corner and found a welcoming place that produced drinks and first course within 10 minutes - and our waitress was knowledgable and cheerful with it.

Massively overpriced,

£14 for 2 yes 2 scallops, they were excellent but only 2. It wouldn't hurt if they put 3-4 on the plate. £18 for half a lobster, 2 bites and it was gone. Tasted very good but come on tiny portions. Waited nearly half hour for main course to arrive, food was good but after paying over £100 for something to eat for 2 people we were still hungry! Big up your portions Gordon please! Also the tables were too close together, we asked to move as we felt we were sat way too close to people and if I was overweight I would not have been able to squeeze to my table anyway it was about 5 inches wide too close for comfort they need to lose a few tables and give customers their privacy.

Can mostly agree with the review from Richard below everything was near perfect for luch and can imagine once they have ironed out the odd opening day issue this will be one of the best places to hang out in the city.

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

Friday, October 14, 2011 - My main of venison, celeriac and sour cherry is close to my perfect dish on paper, and thankfully didn't let me down. The slices of venison were perfectly medium rare, with a good seal around the outside, and packed with lovely meat juices. Add a slick of the celeriac puree and a sour cherry, and you get very happy noises from me...I liked a lot about Bread Street Kitchen and thankfully suffered no consequences of the reported inconsistent service (being with the PR helps). I can't but feel that the whole place would have benefited by being half the size, but the food was good and the cocktails great.

Cheese and Biscuits

Cheese and Biscuits -

Thursday, October 06, 2011 - I was delighted to find that the Bread St Kitchen burger is cooked medium rare, and contains a generous (if a bit cricket-ball-shaped) portion of good beef. Topped only with sliced pickles, a gooey layer of remarkably Ogleshield-like Bermondsey Frier cheese and with a silky, solid brioche bun, I particularly liked the fact there was no tomato or huge chunks of iceberg in it, just a very thin layer of shredded lettuce underneath...But, as ever, it all comes down to that question of value. For 42 quid a head with just one alcoholic drink and two courses each (plus a side), it's expensive.
