Gordon Ramsay's latest venture, Bread Street Kitchen, is now open at the One New Change development near St Paul's. The venue features a raw bar, an open kitchen with a wood-burning oven, and a wine balcony displaying around 2000 bottles. The all-day menu includes cider-braised pork collar, sea bass ceviche and king crab cocktail.

what the critics say

Guardian

Jay Rayner

Sunday, October 30, 2011 - A king-crab cocktail had lots of pearly fresh meat, as it should do at 15 quid a pop. Steamed sea bass with a silky aubergine puree heavy with cumin was a very precise piece of cookery, and a grilled veal chop would have been a marvel if only it had been allowed to rest properly. A dessert of cinnamon and ricotta fritters was hot and sugary and naughty. Too many other things weren't good enough. Sticky tamarind chicken wings had the thrill of being dirty food served up by the classy Ramsay, until we realised they were no better than the sort you'd buy when completely bladdered from some gnarly KFC knock-off joint in Dalston. And the mark-up! Five small second joints for 8 quid.

Metro

Marina O'Loughlin - 3/5

Wednesday, October 19, 2011 - Yes, there's the odd heart flutter at two fine, barrel-shaped medallions of rosy venison, cleverly paired with sour cherries and a velvety pool of celeriac puree. And so-now sides of macaroni cheese and a fresh, creamy-crunchy slaw are excellent, as are tamarind chicken wings tasting of real tamarind, tangy, jammy and crisp. But there's a lot not to love: what's described on the menu as 'oven-baked burrata, heritage tomatoes and onion tart' delivers something entirely different: oven-dried tomatoes on pastry, a measly hummock of good, creamy, uncooked cheese and no onion. A veal chop, served pleasingly pink, is weirdly truncated and misshapen, as though it's had a slab shaved off to appease the bottom line.

Two of us ate here on a Tuesday evening. Luckily we were in a corner away from the main dining area upstairs because it got quite full and very loud as the evening progressed. Lots of city suits on expense accounts [by the look of it].

Food was competent but not particularly exciting. The service was good but not very friendly.

Overall, it's a good venue for the area - the City lacks any decent places to eat - particularly if someone else is paying. But it lacks atmosphere somewhat and is pretty loud in the main part of the restaurant.

Went to Bread Street Kitchen last night. Was very nervous after reading reviews but that was short lived as it was wonderful. The restaurant was packed, the service was terrific, waiters attentive and charming, the food excellent, good buzz of an atmosphere. We had beef and veal steaks, both exellent and way better than the restaurant next door. Will definitely be coming back.

We had a few drinks and some of the bar foods at the Bread Street Kitchen yesterday and was not impressed. While the drinks were nice the food was well below parr. The flat bread was mediocre while the pasta was oily and well below what you would expect for the price and reputation. Conclusion: Stick to drinks - at least if you eat in the bar.

Didn't really know what to expect...well we loved it, the food was simple but full of flavours, the service attentive and our waitress was great and a lot of fun, she made our night.

we can't wait to go back.

Just got back from lunch here. the food was delicious, but the service was pretty appalling.

The waiter (possibly the manager, frighteningly enough) who came to take our order was sleazy, did the classic guaranteed irritant of asking for our order without a pad, and then proceeded to find that he wasn't going to be able to remember it and disappeared off for a while to find a pad.

I requested one side dish without all the fuss around it (do green beans really need parmesan and shallots all over them?). I repeated this twice. I noticed that he had just written "beans" on the pad, so as a former waitress myself, I suggested that he make a note that I wanted them plain. He rather patronisingly said that was fine he would deal with it. But yes, you guessed it, the beans were later served covered in parmesan and onions. Thanks.

The downstairs section of the restaurant seemed to be exclusively staffed by creepy male waiters who all seemed to feel that the best way of ingratiating themselves was to eavesdrop on whatever my friend and I were talking about whenever they came near the table, and then make a comment to us. I found this incredibly rude, as well as invasive.

Every other Gordon Ramsay restaurant I have visited (Maze, Claridges, Petrus (when it was his), The Narrow) has had exemplary staff, so I was really disappointed by this experience. The waiter just put through the amount including service charge on the card machine, and as my friend was paying she didn't want to make the fuss of reversing the charge, but I feel that 12.5% was woefully undeserved.

The reviews on this site appear to be mixed, despite this I decided to give Bread Street Kitchen a go, and was pleasantly surprised. Despite the size of the place it had a warm buzzy atmosphere. Our server was great, super friendly yet still professional. I had the steak, my partner the bass, both of which were excellent. Overall we had a lovely evening, go.

Our departmental lunch today and boss treated us to Bread Street Kitchen Gordon Ramsay's latest place. Really impressed. Started with cocktails in the bar on the ground floor and then climbed the magnificent staircase to the first floor where there is an amazing restaurant. It's so uber cool! Fab music and the decor is so vintage and sat on chairs like we used to have at school. The service was really fluid and our waitress talked us through the really diverse menu. For me my Scallops stater and posh shepherds pie was perfect and I still had room for the most amazing chocolate tart. Just a really nice atmosphere and I got chatting to the table next to us who were really friendly and they ALL had the infamous burger which they were raving about. Even the toilets were cool. A wonderful experience and the food, drinks, service and general atmosphere made me feel really cool and welcome. Suffice to say finished up with more cocktails at the upstairs bar as no need to dash back to work!

Great décor and atmosphere, very friendly and professional service. Nice choices on the menu. Bar and communal seats lack bag / coat hooks. Food was very, very, very salty. Our starters were taken off the bill when we raised it - but really, the main course, the sides, everything tasted like mountains of salt in various textures! Freshness of the food is a question mark. A bit of a disappointment, really.

If you want to have a nice and peaceful dinner then please do not go to this place; instead, if you want to have a bit of drama with raw steak; bones (2 fish bones) in the fish fillet; water all over your nice suit, please, this is the best place where you could experience everything in one go! Gordon, do you want to bring hells kitchen live and experience in your own restaurant? Though I liked their waitress that night, but the excuses that they gave are not acceptable. “If for other customers, we will just put the raw steak in the oven and bring it back again.” Well thanks for re-cooking it for me, but medium raw became well-done? What could I say? “Sorry, but we could not guarantee that all the bones could be removed from the fish fillets!” If you cannot, please let your customers know before they eat it. Otherwise, with Gordon’s name related with this restaurant, everyone will expect high standard food like he advices in all his TV programmes. So what if one customer got the fish bone down to the throat? That is not funny at all. Please if you want to be a celebrity chef restaurant, then be one with high standard. Btw, don’t keep silent when you spill water on your customers’ suits and hope that they will not notice. Come on Gordon, you could do better than this! Please learn from your mistake. Otherwise, say what you say to others in the programme when they do this!

Just had dinner at Bread Street Kitchen, dinner for the most part was inedible. Raw tuna with lemon starter was flavorless and served rather warm for a raw dish, that plate was left full. Meatballs and mac and cheese were just ok, something I could have made from a box or jar in my kitchen. Artichoke soup and bread were the highlights of the night. The server tried, but her order entry system seemed slow and cumbersome as she spent more time typing than listening or looking at her customers. Then we can talk about the girl at the bar downstairs who was in a completely empty room but still could not be bothered to call a taxi let alone look up from picking at her nails. The best thing about the place was the free wi-fi.

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

Friday, October 14, 2011 - My main of venison, celeriac and sour cherry is close to my perfect dish on paper, and thankfully didn't let me down. The slices of venison were perfectly medium rare, with a good seal around the outside, and packed with lovely meat juices. Add a slick of the celeriac puree and a sour cherry, and you get very happy noises from me...I liked a lot about Bread Street Kitchen and thankfully suffered no consequences of the reported inconsistent service (being with the PR helps). I can't but feel that the whole place would have benefited by being half the size, but the food was good and the cocktails great.

Cheese and Biscuits

Cheese and Biscuits -

Thursday, October 06, 2011 - I was delighted to find that the Bread St Kitchen burger is cooked medium rare, and contains a generous (if a bit cricket-ball-shaped) portion of good beef. Topped only with sliced pickles, a gooey layer of remarkably Ogleshield-like Bermondsey Frier cheese and with a silky, solid brioche bun, I particularly liked the fact there was no tomato or huge chunks of iceberg in it, just a very thin layer of shredded lettuce underneath...But, as ever, it all comes down to that question of value. For 42 quid a head with just one alcoholic drink and two courses each (plus a side), it's expensive.
