I went to this restaurant with a couple of friends.
The food is about average. Contrary to other reviewers here, I find the food is too north vietnamese based. The service is not that great.

Beautiful food and a great range of hand-picked wines. The spring and summer rolls in particular are delicious - delicately spiced and full of flavour. I have been told that the pork belly is amazing but being vegetarian myself I can only comment on the beautiful veggie dishes - the kai choi greens and tofu steak are lovely. It can get very busy at weekends so be prepared to queue but it is well worth it, in my opinion.

This was not the first time I had dinner at Cay Tre, but it was the most dissapointed time. The food was still ok but seemed not to be like before, especially the Bun Bo Hue, the broth is not really tasty and spicy. In addition, the service was freaking deplorable. How come? It was not a busy night, I just wanted to order another coke but all the waiters and waitresses were standing behind the bar chatting , 2 girls screaming and laughing loud. The girl wears glasses saw me waving but still chatting and ignored. It was not like the Cay Tre I have been before, a guy running food even didnt understand what I said, smiled like an idiot and went away even though I tried to asked him to require another waiter come to serve my bro. It was totally the worst service ever.

I ate at Cay Tre for the second time last week after an interval of about a year (I rarely go to Hoxton and City Rd), and my friends and I had a meal of wonderful and authentic Viet food. As someone who lived for years with Vietnamese people and ate with them every day I can say that the food we had was authentic in style and flavour, well-prepared and full of good flavours that I would look for in Viet food. The restaurant was bursting busy, and there was a queue forming as we ate, so I guess there are other people who appreciate the food there as well. The staff were busy but quite efficient and the service was fine. I personally prefer a busy atmosphere rather than a quiet salon-style eating experience. The restaurant is not that big, so if you like refined eating of a different kind, then maybe you would get less out of this place than some others, but I would definately recommend Cay Tre and highly praise the food there.

I did have a good experience with Caytre. Went there last Thus for a birthday party of 8 and we really enjoyed it. Although we haven't reserved and the restaurant had been already quite busy by the time we get there, we got 1 just after like 5 or 10 mins waiting. The decor 's unique, encouraged imagination, very interesting.
The food was amazing. We had a couple of famous salted squid, some grilled beef on the table and some salad, so refreshing and tasty. The main course also was stunning. My friends had some traditional "pho" soup with the taste of vietnam and some surprised campfire steak with rice. For me was a tender feeling from bunsa.
I can tell that the waiters were busy but helpful and friendly, we didnt even have to wait long for a cup of tap water.
Well, had a great time, definitely come back soon.

Went to Cay Tre because of the good reviews but our visit was a decidedly underwhelming experience - staff were sullen and rushed and the restaurant very cramped. We were seated right next to another couple and would have preferred a table further to the back of the restaurant. It wasn't particularly busy at the time so it shouldn't have been a problem but instead were told very bluntly we were not allowed to move! Not exactly great customer service....
Pho was substandard and overall the meal was very expensive for what it was. Also the choice of technicoloured lighting inside the restaurant is somewhat tacky. Will not be going back and will travel further up Kingsland Road next time.

Not sure what the hype about this place is?! Came here for a dinner, food was over seasoned, waiting staff had poor attitude. It was busy the time but with the largest table - 17 people, we can only command a single waiter's attention. The waiting staff seemed to e keen to take the order but the food came so late that were left hungry for over an hour. Worst of all some of us didn't even get an food. Only after we raised the issue then the food came within 5min (microwaved!!)
Lastly the food isn't as good as it cracked out to be!

Avoid this place like a plague! Waiting staff has poor English cannot under a simple order. Constantly bringing wrong food to the table. Drinks are not chilled and I waited 2 and half hours before someone decide that someone is missing a dish and not even an apology.
This place is a disgrace! The place is noisy and cramped. Tables are dirty and presentation of the food is disgraceful! When the food came after 3 hours of wait, I have lost all interest in stay at the place and finish my meal.

I went to this restaurant with 10 friends for my birthday. They had no record of my booking so we were squeezed around a table for 8. There were also a few misunderstandings with drinks orders where they would bring the wrong thing. The service was slow but it was very busy and the atmosphere and decor was good. The food is good, very big portions, but it wasn't amazing. On the whole I would recommend this restaurant but go early if you are a big party.

After the 100th visit this restaurant, I feel it is definitely the best vietnamese restaurant in London, some dishes might be better than in Vietnam.
Working nearby, so I have the chance of sampling all their newest dishes. The restaurant just got a new menu featuring all basic and best modern Vietnamese. I tried Mekong Bun, lobster curry yesterday and all were superb, unlike the other on Kingsland Road that offer cheap prices but cheap ingredients. I think Cay Tre price is not cheap, but it is cheap for what use to cook for you. Beef fillet, lobster, sea bream, free range chicken, fresh duckling. Don't think any of the others would beat them.
Try the Lobster Curry and a Beer Laos and you will know. Or their Mekong Bun for a perfect noodle, vegetable, seafood dish. I am in live with it.
