what the critics say

Metro

Marina O'Loughlin - 3/5

Wednesday, February 16, 2011 - It's a blast, seriously. From the sticky, ultimate-Toast-Topper filthiness of bone marrow mixed with Parmesan and squelched on to toast, to the delicate, pungent pleasures of green and red endive spears filled with pork pate, crisply frazzled shallots, gapi (Thai shrimp paste), mint and coriander, it's all good. Daft and overblown it might occasionally be (descriptions require whole paragraphs) but each dish offers a small adventure...A shorter, frequently changing menu without compromising on creativity would work every bit as well, especially for regulars. But Kopapa knows fusion can still be fun. And rather fabulous.

Telegraph

Zoe Williams - 5/10

Monday, February 07, 2011 - Kopapa is not a very inviting space, with its clackety encaustic tiles and hard, stout chairs. It has the perfect atmosphere for a modish business lunch...The lentil fritters in themselves had enough flavour to impress but then there was fried plantain, an effervescent coriander and papaya salad, a clay-coloured but delicious coconut mulch. There was so much going on, and it was all so harmonious but so self-sufficient...It's too patchy to recommend with confidence, but there are impressive elements.

We went for dinner. The prices on the menu are deceptive. As your waiter will explain once you are seated, most of the dishes on the dinner menu are small tapas-sized portions (at around £8 each). There are also two main course-sized fish and meat dishes at £15 - £20, which come without veg. So whether you eat tapas-style or conventionally, expect a hefty bill (easily £40 - £50 per head with wine). The mistake is to think you can make a meal of a couple of the cheaper dishes each. If you do you will end up £25 out of pocket, and spreading peanut butter sandwiches when you get home. The one exception is the burger, which at £10 plus a tiny bowl of chips at £3.50 is a modestly feasible meal in itself. The atmosphere is more like a buzzy cafe than a restaurant. It seems full every night, so it must appeal to some tastes and pockets.

AVOID !!! Trust me on this. Tiny portions, which are very very pricey, rubbish atmosphere, poor service, tables close together, can not think of a single reason to go back, and never will. POOR.

We went to Kopapa on Saturday with friends and enjoyed everything about it. Unlike many fusion restaurants, there is no pretension about either the restaurant or the food on offer. In fact, the food is just great and doesn't need the fusion-label to distract from it. This is a relaxed, informal restaurant.

We really enjoyed the Tapas/Starter format - it serves perfectly well as either. The mixed platter offered a delicious mix of good quality ingredients, including fantastic Chorizo. The chilli squid was amazing and really moreish. The steak with wasabi gnocci was good and perfectly cooked, but not outstanding. The deserts were the real stars though, especially the pumpkin pie with home-made marshmallow which had us all talking. A real grown-up desert.

The wine-list is large enough to offer genuine choice and offers a good range of quality across a wide price-range. There is also a quality cocktail-list available. In fact, this ended up as the biggest part of our bill.

Service was perfect for the occasion and suited to the environment. Service is friendly, unhurried and relaxed. Although tables are booked for a set period only we never felt as if we were being rushed through in order to clear the table.

I've already recommended Kopapa to others.

Extremely poor value for money and unimpressive food. Suffers from the confusion that besets so many 'fusion' restaurants.. a couple of the plates were fun and tasty enough but most were rather pointless.

Most unforgiveably, we ordered 6 tapas and a main between two of us and were still quite hungry afterwards (the bill was already quite high by that point!)...

Anybody that has ever had to wait for a table at Peter Gordons other restaurant The Providores and Tapa Room will be glad to know he has a new venture called Kopapa. My girlfriend and I did not book and when we arrived, Kopapa was packed. We were told that we would be able to get a table in 10-20 mins. We sat at the bar and enjoyed some cocktails. As with The Providores the wine list is quality, not cheap but we ploughed in to 2 different wines because you can buy nearly everything by the carafe rather than having to buy a bottle.

Food was amazing and we of course over ordered. Gutted no room for desserts!

Definitely a great addition to Covent Gardens lack lustre food offerings. We will book for next time.

According to their website 'Kopapa is a totally unique dining experience in Seven Dials'. What they mean is unique as in probably the worst experience of your life. Actually the food was pretty good, sadly 'service' bore no resemblance to the term (20 minutes before anyone came to our table, four goes to order a lime and soda, a bottle of water that never arrived despite 4 tries and 30 minutes between starters and mains ON A PRE THEATRE menu!!!)- probably because the staff were busy chatting to each other. Their response to our complaint? 'we're a new restaurant' - unbelievable! if you are thinking of going there - don't

Having had a good meal at The Providores many years ago, we decided to try Peter Gordon's new restaurant in Covent Garden. I had expected something cosier but the casual setting is well suited to the fusion tapas-style menu, though the hard surfaces mean it can get noisy. I would say it's more a third date than a first date place.

In opening week, we expected some teething problems and there were certainly a few. Nothing major, but some underwhelming dishes and a long wait for some of them. The oysters were excellent, prepared with three different Japanese accompaniments. The one with sake broth in particular was excellent. We also enjoyed the butternut squash, the chorizo beignets and the sticky coconut pork ribs. The sauce for these was wonderfully fragrant but very messy to eat, even with the finger bowl provided. We didn't really enjoy the bone marrow on toast and a few of the other ko-tapas dishes felt a bit of a mess of ingredients.

We would return to try out the starters/mains and possibly brunch, which was always done well at Providores. I would recommend giving it a little time to settle in before rushing along to try it.

Tuesday, January 25, 2011 - I think the experience with the innovation of fusion food, was a case of Russian roulette, when I did get lucky, it was great. 40.50 for two, was exceptional value for money...Please don't take this as a terribly negative review. I think if you do end up in Kopapa, you'll largely enjoy it. However, I feel that you'll have to be quite careful with picking dishes, whilst they are elaborate in description, the end result might not match expectations. In the end, I don't think this is the alternative Providores in the city. It does not carry the same glamour, but perhaps that was never the point.

Sunday, January 09, 2011 - Taking into consideration that this was only their second day, and two of our most desired dishes were unavailable as they had sold out (ribs and ox tongue), we really enjoyed our meal. The service was slow if friendly, but the food itself was decent. The highlights for me a delicious smoked salmon drenched in yuzu beetroot salsa, and slices of toast slathered with rich parmesan and bone marrow. There were disppointments with the steamed buns almost raw and items such as the duck liver parfait quite disappointing. On the whole though, everyone was pleased and actually excited by what we had tried.

Thursday, January 06, 2011 - Overall, I liked Kopapa. The service was friendly and attentive, and the dining room is casual and welcoming. Most of the dishes we tried were good, with just a small minority of forgettable, 'skip it' clunkers. For sure, it'd be a great place to drop by for coffee and dessert, and it was a perfect spot for a friendly catch-up...'Sesame infused tuna tartare with soy and wasabi tapioca, crispy lotus root and shiso' - that's the menu description, and it's long, yes? This was the sort of dish that characterized much of what we tried. Boring, safe tuna tartare well prepared with just enough 'twist' to lift it out of boring land.
