We had our department Christmas lunch at the Well this week and we all really enjoyed it. Both the food and the service were great - the scallop entree was a highlight for me personally...

We travelled from Canary Wharf for this lunch and it was great to go to a different area. The atmosphere was nice and relaxed and Christmasy with crackers and "secret prize" envelopes for everyone.

I would definately go to the Well again if I was in the area, the bar downstairs looked great as well.

16 of us went to The Well for our department Christmas lunch. The food and the service were both fantastic. I would highly recommend it.

I booked the downstairs bar at The Well for my birthday party and I can highly recommend it. Before deciding on The Well, I went round a few pubs to see what was available and The Well was clearly the nicest. Most pubs would only offer half a floor but The Well offered the whole of downstairs and therefore truly private. The stylish decor was also a definite attraction.

The event manager Nadia was very efficient and helpful in the run up to the party. The evening went smoothly without a hitch, with excellent food and very reasonably priced drinks. Service was wonderful and we all had a good time.

Although the downstairs bar is advertised to hold 70 people, I had around 35 people at the party and that was comfortable. I wouldn't want to have much more than 45 people there.

I will be very happy to hold another party there.

I hired out the basement bar for a party and it was a great success. The staff were really friendly and accomodating. The venue was great and everyone commented on how nice the area was. Great night all around!

I had walked past this place a few times and enticed by the menu and the nice looking interior I booked a table for my partner and I. I can't fault it. The food was lovely, from the crab starter to the rib eye steak with bearnaise, I really enjoyed it! My partner had simply grilled scallops and a salmon dish for main course that she enjoyed a lot. Service was friendly and charming, looking forward to going back already.

my boyfriend invited me to this restaurant for my birthday against his will as he said gastropubs are just a fashionable thing. I disagree. Unfortunately out experience was not pleasant and he stills thinks the same. Nice little cosy restaurant but we were invisible to the waitresses. Starters were nice but really over priced, I've never seen anything like this. Main course was again, quite nice but again, over priced. We got our drinks half way through the meal and we never got the bread. Really ruined my birthday. We went to tesco 10 meters away to buy something to eat afterwards. no way I'm coming back.

My son James had his wedding reception at The Well, Clerkenwell recently and I can highly recommend this venue. There were about 80 guests to be served with canapes and champagne, a hot buffet, wine, tea and coffee. The service was prompt, efficient and the staff never stopped working from 2pm til midnight. The food was fantastic. So many guests approached me to praise the venue, the staff and the food. Everybody was so impressed. I would recommend this venue for any occasion.

The Well is my local, and I recently had a birthday party there. The food is consistently excellent, the staff always accommodating and friendly, and the vibe relaxed. For my birthday, they kindly arranged a great table, and the nibbles went down a treat. All in the all, organizing the whole thing was simple and a great day was had by all.

I would recommend with no hesitation.

I booked the downstairs cocktail bar for my 30th birthday party.

It was a really nice space for a party and has plenty of seating and its own bar. I ordered several of the platters and these were really good. Most of my guests commented about how good the food was. I probably over ordered as well as the platters easily fed at least 6 people!

However, there were a few things that they could do better. The downstairs bar only served certain drinks, so if you wanted any cocktails or something on tap, you had to go upstairs. The cocktails part of this was quite surprising as the downstairs area is billed as a cocktail bar. Also, whilst the minimum spend was quite affordable for a central London bar, if any of your guests did use the upstairs bar to order drinks then they were not automatically added to the minimum spend tab unless they told them to. The bar man downstairs was a little vague and seemed rather aloof at times and was not always around when needed. However, I think this is unusual as all the other staff were very friendly and helpful, in particular the manager who was on that night made us feel very welcome.

However, that said, we had a good night and I would still highly recommend the bar for a private event as it is a good space for this.

An American In London

An American In London

Friday, February 12, 2010 - I appreciate how, once you get the discount, it's tough to imagine paying double what you did, but my roasted scallops, for example, weren't great and weren't awful, either. How do you put a price on that? 4.50 seemed alright for this level of cooking, but at £9, I'd be upset. My rabbit pie was similarly alright. The filling was more soupy than I like, and I had to dig around to find the bits of rabbit, so again, at 7.50, I'm tolerant, and at 15, I'm outraged...Which is all to say: go to the Well only for drinks with friends, or if you can get the 50 percent off food deal.

Cheese and Biscuits

Cheese and Biscuits - 5/10

Friday, July 03, 2009 - I left The Well with the distinct impression of a place resting on its laurels. Certainly, although there are many things to like about an informal, attractive room selling oysters and good cocktails, the food seems increasingly like an afterthought and it's hard to see how today's kitchen could produce another grilled rabbit and foie gras main course like they did 3 or 4 years ago. If they are happy to slide into anonymity, then of course that's their choice, and if they're still making money I can see why they might not care. But there are simply too many other excellent options in this part of town to warrant complacency for any length of time.
