New Scandinavian influenced restaurant, Verru, is now open on Marylebone Road. The head chef, Andrei Lesment, trained at Pied a Terre and his menu includes Icelandic cod with crisp chicken wings and Elwy Valley lamb with anchovy spiced potatoes.

what the critics say

TimeOut

Guy Dimond - 3/5

Tuesday, December 21, 2010 - Icelandic cod was a smallish portion for a main course costing 16.50, but the flesh was firm and attractively seared on one side. Colourful garnishes included little melon-scoops of courgette and a mussel shell, for effect. Venison meatballs had a stronger, gamier flavour than their pork or veal cousins, tender and moist, the plate garnished with a yellow blob of pureed sweet potato, baby carrots and swiss chard...The cooking at Verru is nowhere near as good as places such as Pied a Terre or Maze, where Lesment has previously worked, but then prices - although far from cheap - are also much more modest.

Just had lunch there today. The staff is friendly, the menu interesting, the lunch menu a very good value and most importantly, the food is fresh, light and delicious.

Had an excellent dinner at Verru with my girlfriend! The setting was intimate and lovely and the food exceptional. It is a true gem this one but you must book to avoid being disappointed! It is not cheap but is certainly worth the money as your dishes are both stunning to look at and delicious! The service was very good but watch your head on the way to the toilet!

Went for lunch and tried the prix fixe, which has got to be one of the best deals in London.

I had the mackerel starter, and the brunette had the herrings .Both dishes were excellent. For mains we both opted for the filet of sea bass , and it too was excellent. A neighbouring table was tucking into the neck of lamb, and the "hunter's" sandwich (roast pork cutlet)which both looked very good.

With a carafe of wine and mineral water, bread etc, had no room for dessert.

Will be back. Place is tiny, so reservations are a must.

Incredible lunch value -- two courses for £11.95. Menu changes weekly. Always fresh ingredients and expertly prepared. Good wine list, designed to compliment the food. Service is intimate in this small but excellent restaurant. A great addition to Marylebone. Now a regular lunch spot for me and colleagues

Thank you very much for your hospitality Verru. I must say that the food was absolutely fantastic!! My regret was that I couldn't try every single dish!! The Scallops with chicken oysters was exceptional very tender and full of flavors, the beef and Lamb especially could have been cut with a spoon! Amazing food! The desert was also exceptional in both presentation and taste! The different levels of tanginess in the apple and rhubarb pudding dish was very impressive, not to mention the bitter sweet balance achieved in the chocolate and macadamia nut - again fantastic!

There was also something else in between dishes; I think maybe smoked foie grass between two chips if I can remember? I can only describe this as a Subaru impreza wrx! Or maybe a roller caster! :-) The flavors seemed to change and amplify and get more intense the longer it stayed in my mouth.

A brilliant evening, with great food, an intimate atmosphere and great service!

On two previous occasions I had tried to get a table at Verru on the off chance when walking by. Both times the restaurant was full to capacity and I was unable to get a table, the manager stressed that I should book ahead next time to ensure I got a table and gave me Verru’s business card.

Was it worth the wait? In short, indeed it was. The first impression was the immensely cosy de-stressed décor that was immediately relaxing and the service quickly took care of us, we were seated and eased into the menus. As with other nights we visited, the restaurant was busy, but nothing seemed hectic or out of place.

The menu covered a variety of tastes and had some unique and thoughtful tweaks. And then the real test: the tasting proved even better. Spot on cooking that, the cod was firm and it’s flakes of flesh came away with ease and the pork on the bone was succulent and tender.

In the end Verru rewarded on the initial wait of twice trying to get a table. That I had to book ahead is a sure sign that Verru is a popular destination. My wife and I will be returning to Verru and booking in advance next time.

this dinky little restaurant deserves to be supported.

the menu is short and interesting to curious and the wines good and reasonably priced.

starters - seared squid with smoked tomato sauce was delicious and it was a pleasure to have squid that was tender instead of like car tyres. scallops with pigs cheek and fresh mango chutney was very curious ..... all the composite parts were seriously tasty and well-cooked, but they didn't marry happily - chef needs to have another think, but the idea and concept were great

mains - pork on the bone with crackling didn't appear as on the tin, but rib-sticking good for all that! ..... in fact it was slow roasted pork hock, but the crackling had gone awol - chef had burnt it we discovered later!

roast lamb with a braised and shredded shoulder spring roll was a resounding success, especially the unusual spring roll

puds - millefeuille with chocolate icecream and hazelnuts is not to my taste, but my companion pronounced it to be top notch. elderflower cheescake was another subtle success, though the chessecake itself was arguably a bit dense

wine - 2010 fleurie la roilette at £28.50 is indicative of the great value to be found on the list

overall, at £53.00 a head including coffee and service was terrific value for london and the staff and owner are genuinely interested to hear opinion of the food

even though it would be easy to find technical fault, i would certainly go back again, not least because the menu is different without being stupid, it's friendly and very good value

Our daughter has just completed a cookery course at the nearby Cordon Bleu School, and on her judgement we went there last weekend to celebrate her sister's birthday. We had a very good meal at very fair prices. Our family " foodie " had no complaints, and she has particularly high standards. My pork on the bone was the most tender pork I have ever eaten, but another review says that it is slow cooked for 8 hours, so now I know why !

The ambience is cosy and casual, and service was fine and friendly.

Would definitely return.

Interesting point of view Julie but I must disagree with you. I’m a regular customer at Verru and go to eat there at least once a week. In fact the beetroot salad with goat’s curd is one of my favourite and always tastes amazing. I have never had anything that was not fresh, had a weird texture or was undercooked. By now I have probably tried everything they have on the menu so I know what I’m talking about. The chef at Verru Andrei Lesment is a genius in my mind and the service there isn’t bad at all! So I’m not quit sure what happened on your visit to Verru but would like to assure everyone who is about to try it – it’s a great experience and I highly recommend it!
