Giles Coren - 6/10

Saturday, January 29, 2011 - It is intimate, sensitive to its community, well lit, rather noisy and packed with good-looking young people who haven't got much money...I had a really cracking haunch of venison with a red wine and chocolate gravy. I'm not a deer and chocolate man, but this was exquisite, the chocolate just giving a shine to the sauce and a bittersweet lift, but nothing more. There was good clam and bacon chowder, slow-cooked collar of bacon in a huge pile with excellent, meaty pease pudding and heaps of cavolo nero.

TimeOut

TimeOut - 3/5

Wednesday, December 08, 2010 - A starter of smoked salmon - prepared in the Hansen & Lydersen smokehouse in Stoke Newington - came accompanied by sweet and crumbly-textured soda bread, baked earlier in-house. The warm beetroot salad with sorrel and oozing duck egg was simple yet good. Main courses, such as creamy risotto or roast chicken, are proper winter warmers. The polenta with wild mushroom ragu and smoked mozzarella was a pleasing vegetarian dish, although the tomato sauce slightly overpowered the subtle taste of the funghi...A little eatery that brings some warmth to this patch of north London.

As a first time visitor I was pleasantly surprised by the great atmosphere of the restaurant. Very well done. So the start of the evening was very pleasant. Unfortunately neither the service nor the food could meet the expectation the atmosphere set. The service was flawless but soulless. A smile or a friendly hello could have overcome the feeling of being served by indifferent robots. The meat I had was perfectly cooked, very tender, unfortunately not really hot and tastewise very bland. Some was true for my partners dish. The restaurant is a nice addition to Stroud Green road but we left somehow disappointed.

Great to see that others had better experiences and maybe we were just there at the wrong evening.

This place is fantastic - not only a great local restaurant, but one of the best meals I've had anywhere in London in quite some time.

The service was spot-on, with genuinely nice staff who were unobtrusive but made sure that we had everything we needed, and with a sense of humour. The food was delicious. Everyone in our party of five enjoyed everything that they ordered (my venison was the highlight though).

I'm not one for writing reviews, but this restaurant has made me come out of the woodwork. Nervous as I am about it becoming very popular and getting a table becoming difficult, it deserves praise. My husband and I have been twice now and loved it both times. The menu is simple but mouthwatering, with a fantastic selection of aperitifs; the food is cooked beautifully and is thoroughly delicious; and the service is unfussy, effective and pleasant. The chocolate and rosemary pot with black pepper biscotti is honestly the best dessert I have ever eaten. Our only (small) criticism is that it can be a tad chilly - wrap up warm!

Like the diner below, I also want the restaurant to stay: but I am worried that too much good word of mouth will lead to it being too busy for me to get a table! My wife and I ate there last night and loved it. We had mackerel escabeche (cooked and then pickled in a well-spiced pickling liquor) with an apple and beetroot salsa, which was delicious - preceded by fantastic soda bread. Mains were very good hearty polenta with smoked mozzarella and an almost meaty mushroom ragu, and a beautifully-spiced pumpkin, spinach and pea curry served with rice. Pudding was a spectacular rosemary chocolate pot with sea salt, served with black pepper biscotti. My god, it was delicious. i had a glass of wine; total bill was £38 excluding (very pleasant) service. The room is casual and well-decorated. I hope it thrives, and we'll definitely be going back.

I don't usually write reviews, but with this place I am doing so for selfish reasons. I want more people to go there because I want it to stay! The food is simple, clean and well thought out, it is warm & seductive British soul food. Great value for money and you should travel for it. If only London had more restaurants with this kind of spirit.
