Was there with a couple of friends. The fish (we ordered cod, mackerel and fish cake) was good but the chips were easily the worst that I've eaten in a long time. A bit pricey for what you get too.

My friend and I came to celebrate her birthday. Food is in general above average, fish were fresh and batter still crisp and warm when we took our bites. But the fries were a bit soggy for having been left too long I think. Would benefit from being less greasy.
Upside is that the place has excellent and thoughtful service, contrary to what previous customers have rated- they gave us an apple pie on the house! so that's pretty amazing and sweet.

I've had the misfortune of troubling Poppies' doorway three times now. Never again.
The food, I concede, is good. Tasty chips, fresh fish, a sturdy sausage. But is the primary role of the restaurant simply to fill our stomachs? No, there must be more than that.
Everything is fake. The faux-chalkboard menu, the mish-mash chintzy decor. Where buoyant cockney welcomes should greet those entering the restaurant, surly grunts are to be found. Any kind of request or amendment is dismissed in a most un-East End fashion. A box for your chips instead of a cone? 50p. Ketchup (that most ESSENTIAL condiment) relinquished one sachet at a time, with an extra charge.
This is a chip shop, yes. But it's pretensions of being a 'propa' establishment fall well short. If principled, avoid.

Dissapointed.
Chips, hot but uninteresting. Mushy Peas, taste like tinned. Tartare Sauce, mostly mayonaise, no bite to it. Bread & Butter, not butter but butter type spread I'd say. Tea, not a bad cup.
Haddock, sadly they do not cook to order so you get fish that has been kept warm under the lights. Mine had been around for a while as it was not very hot and the batter was no longer crisp. Shame 'cause it was a good piece of fish.
Much better places than this in London so will not be visiting again.
Service was nothing special either I'm afraid.
Overall expensive for what it was.

Had lunch here on Bank Holiday Monday and we opted for the homemade fishcakes, chips and mushy peas / sausage in batter & chips.
Although we were quite suprised at some of the prices here (£1.95 for a diet coke?!) we cannot fault the food. The fishcakes were fresh, tasty and you could tell they had been home made. The chips were chunky and tasted like "proper" fish shop chips. The mushy peas, again pricey at £2.45 were nice and you got quite a big portion.
I did enjoy my meal here, but the main gripe for me was the price. I don't mind paying slightly over the odds because of the location, and the food was good quality, but being charged £1.50 for one piece of buttered bread!!! just took the mickey in my opinion. You get free bread in most pie and mash shops, and if the owner has been in business in the East End for 35years as claimed, he would do well to remember that these are little touches that make a really great business.

Ate here with a group of friends last week and had a very mixed experience.
The fish and chips were pretty good - no real complaints there at all. The service however, was dire.
The waiter first recommended the haddock, which 2 of my friends ordered. He then brought across everyone's mains, apart from the 2 haddock which weren't ready! He tried to convince one of them that they had actually ordered halibut, which they hadn't, and then made them wait for 10 minutes for their actual meal, while they nursed a (by now) cold portion of mushy peas.
Extraordinarily, when we got the bill, they had charged for the mystery halibut dish (at £12.95) AND an extra cod dish AND an extra starter. When asked what the extra dishes were, the manager simply marked them off the bill without even checking with the kitchen!
All in all - a decent chippy with dreadful management. I'll avoid in the future.

was underwhelmed. service a tad confused and cod was ok nothing more, batter was a bit limp and didn't really live up to old school fish and chipper billing, esp at slightly toppy price point. might give it another go in couple weeks as the area's light on chippys.

Wow, this place was really lame !!
I went on my own and was asked to wait for half an hour whilst they served other larger groups of customers - greed some may call it.
Dont bother, there's a better one around the corner.

Just what Spitalfields needs!
Ate in Poppies earlier today, and was amazed! Fish and chips are easily THE best in London! Cooked to perfection, Mushy peas and Gherkins topped it off!
The queue was half way down the road, so it speaks for itself!, WELL worth the wait.
Warmly Greeted and seated promptly, Juke box plays 50's music which adds to the great atmosphere!
Excellent Value for Money... ! You will not be disappointed.
