Soho's Secret Tea Room

This tea place was branded as vintage, but it was a merely run-down pub with tea and cakes served with charity shop tea cups and plates. Cakes and sandwiches were nothing extraordinary, potions were small. At the time of booking, we were told that it costs £15 for tea, sandwiches and cakes. When we arrived, the price went up to £17.50. For the amount that we paid, it could go a long way in proper tea room establishment!

I visited this place a few months ago, just after it opened, following a recommendation from a friend. It's a little difficult to believe it's there: you have to walk through the gap in the bar in the pub downstairs and up some steps in the back. The decor is very pretty - lovely tables cloths, pretty delicate china and heaps of yummy looking cakes. The 1940s theme extends to the music and the staff (who were friendly and attentive, but laid back) are even dressed the part.

The tea list is great and extensive, and the staff were very helpful about suggesting a good one to pick. And the cream tea! Home made scones, home made jams and real clotted cream. Everything a cream tea should be.

I loved this place, and will definitely be going back again. It's one of London's true hidden gems.
