Guy Dimond - 3/5

Wednesday, January 12, 2011 - The best dishes were the simplest, namely the shaaks - vegetable curries - such as the okra stir-fry or the black-eyed bean dish served as part of the Gujarati thali. These were fresh and made with obivous care. We noticed that our fellow diners were tucking into the South Indian dosas and bhel pooris with great relish. We were later told that Mischief also has a Gujarati chef, so it's worth asking who is cooking on your visit and then ordering their specialities accordingly.

Me, my friends and everyone we know think the world of Indian Mischief.

The food is absolutely delicious and the family that owns and runs the place take such pride in explaining each dish that it's an education too. The menu is wide and varied so it's perfect for anyone who's new to South Indian food - and full of unique, homemade, surprising items to keep delighting well-weathered fans of this lovely, light and fragrant cuisine too.

And for anyone who's interested - the food doesn't only taste delicious, it's made with top class ingredients too. The family behind Indian Mischief have run SMBS for years - a popular treasure trove of wholesome, organic foodie stuff a couple of doors down. So they supply the restaurant with the best ingredients - ticking all the fresh, responsibly sourced, local, seasonal, organic and specially imported boxes. So basically it's full of goodness (and pretty much a guiltless curry....!)

I know this review sounds a bit gushing but that's cos I genuinely love this place and it deserves to get a bit of hype and love on here. It's s shame the other guy had a bad experience but I can sincerely say this place is always a winner for me and my lot, plus the stuff have always been gracious and funny and just seem to genuinely care about what they're doing.

Tuck in!

Very disappointed with this restaurant. I have been to Kerala in southern India and adore the food. My favourite dish (Rasam), a spicy soup, was good but the cashew nut curry was incredibly bland. Worst of all though, they served me a warm beer (Bengal Lancer) and when I complained I was told in a very patronising manner that it was an ale. I know that, thank you very much. But ales should not be served warm - just ask Camra! Then, to add insult to injury, when I asked for a glass of tap water I received a lukewarm glass. No ice. This is after complaining about the warm nature of my beer. That lack of care is unforgivable. Even when the food is amazing. Which it is not.
