Sunday, February 20, 2011 - Chabrot is small and demure, and perfectly slathered in Parisian bistro tropes and cliches. But it is done with such precision and intent and fondness that you can not begrudge it...Our main courses ranged from the simple - two large prawns seared on the plancha, dressed only with lemon, olive oil and herbs - to another of true French classicism: a Savoy cabbage leaf stuffed with veal, chestnuts, foie gras and ceps. It sounds like an aneurism on a plate. Instead it was thrillingly light and fresh and came with a translucent non-sticky jus that was the sum of all of its parts.

TimeOut

TimeOut - 4/5

Friday, February 18, 2011 - In both look and atmosphere, Chabrot is unrestrainedly Gallic...The menu isn't groundbreaking, covering bistro classics with a lean towards south-west France, but the attention to detail and small touches elevate it. From a list of specials we chose monkfish 'cassoulet', a deconstructed and fancified version with a slice of fish topped with chorizo perched on a scoop of white beans and tomato sauce; from the same source came a perfectly cooked skirt steak, simply dressed with shallots and accompanied by thin-cut chips and mustard...The appeal for most here will be the prix formule: 15.50 gets you the plat du jour plus a glass of house red or white; add 2 quid and you'll get a coffee and small dessert.

3 of us went for lunch on a rainy Saturday.

Nice warm welcome from all the staff, who provided us with a menu full of enticing choices .We had the tiny fried calamari dusted with chili;the chopped liver with a cheese gougere, and the charcuterie plate. These were all delicous and at our request were served such that we could sample all 3 of them.

Mains included 2 paillard of decious veal and the stuffed cabbage with fresh green beans and broccoli as side orders .All 3 mains were delicious and served hot. We passed on desserts,as we were stuffed. With mineral water and a glass of wine,£120 including service charge was happily paid.

The food here was superb! You might as well have been transported to France for the evening. Starters of escargot, carpaccio (can't remember the French name but basically raw beef), fresh ewes milk & a selection of charcuterie. The cabbage stuffed with veal and foie gras was to die for.

I highly recommend a visit if you want uncomplicated food and good service (plus if you're really nice the head waiter gives you a secret selection of fine French cheeses)

I totally disagree with the review below from Marilyn. How can you call 12.95 overpriced?

Find a restaurant that even lends you a chair to sit on for that price in Knightsbridge. And NO, skirt is not only suitable for casseroles.

I have eaten at Chabrot four times since it opened and I enjoyed it every time. Looks like every food critic in London who experienced it had a good time too.

I am from the industry myself and I am tired of comments from people who have not got a clue. Marilyn, watching Gordon Ramsay’s program does not make you a restaurateur.

Great little restaurant packed with atmosphere, genuine dishes and nice wines. The service is great, the food simple but true to the Bistrot model. Some dishes can be on the expensive side but this is Knightsbridge.

We had lunch and chose the "menu du jour" which was steak et frites. It turned out to be skirt of beef which is beef only suitable for casseroles but the chef had managed to grill it and it was very tough, to say the least. This was served with a small bowl of chips and a dish of mustard (English not French). This was very overpriced at £12.95. It was disgusting food for a French restaurant and would be totally unacceptable anywhere in France.

I haven't read a bad review about this restaurant and after seeing reviews which suggested this was a french affordable bistrot we visited one evening. I can't agree more that the food was good but in fairness £35 for a decidedly average steak is by anyone's standards over priced especially as it didnt include any side dishes. And then there is the wine menu - good selection but totally over priced with nothing under £30 and decent stuff at £40-60.

Service and ambience can't be faulted but at these prices there are better places to eat at for the money.

Lunch Saturday 26th Feb., VERY cramped space downstairs (didn't see up) but apart from that hunky dory. Warm duck liver pate actually duck chopped liver better than anybody's bubba ever made, fantastic bread and butter, brilliant double fried chips, totally perfect rare sirloin with maitre d'hotel butter, cool, minerally house white Burgundy, servicable red Burg., lousy coffee, excellent service. Not fancy, not schmancy, not cheap but worth every sou.

Very cosy french bistro with great atmosphere and a fantastic wine list. For starters we tried the green beans with foie gras, the bone marrow, the squid and the red cabbage salad which were all excellent. For mains we tried the veal pagiard, the pasta with truffles and the chicken with foie gras. The chocolate cake with sesame seeds for desert was simply divine. The manager was very friendly and accomadating to all our needs. Would highly reccomend and will be definetely be going back!

I have been to Chabrot twice now, and will use it again for sure. The first time was for lunch and had their 'formule du Jour' at 12.50, I find it great value for money, especially being in Knightsbridge next to Boulut or Zuma where bills can be high very quiclky. The second was dinner time with my girlfriend. The room is small, therefore the atmosphere is good very quickly. The food is delicious, the chef does not tempere with the ingredients and gets the best out of it. In a way, it reminds me of River Cafe in the good old days, only with a French style. The service is attentive and friendly but never overboard, The wine list is extensive covering most of France with some Italian, Spanish and New World wines. Again, it is quite affordable as you can drink a nice bottle for £30 or even less. One last thing, we ask for tap water, and did not receive the usual attitude... It was done courtuoulsly.

I went to Chabrot with my boyfriend through friends recommendations and we both absolutely loved it! The ambiance is warm, friendly, great deco that makes you forget you are in the heart of Knightsbridge. The food is delicious from start to finish, the highlights for me were the Mackerel with white wine, the stuffed cabbage with the carrots as a side and the cafe gourmand.

Definitely a place I would recommend, and re-visit myself.

Cheese and Biscuits

Cheese and Biscuits - 8/10

Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - The standout amongst the starters, though, was a warm duck liver pate with Comte gougere. The pate itself was lovely and rich, showcasing the distinctive taste and texture of duck liver without being dry or bitter...Mains were equally impressive. A fillet of hake was cooked perfectly and slid apart into bright white flakes with the slightest pressure; Veal was light and soft and dressed with enough fresh herbs and seasoning to compliment and not overwhelm this most delicate of cuts; and best of all was an impossibly tender slice of medium-rare skirt steak, the flavour of which could only have come from London's finest (and most expensive) artisan butchers, O'Sheas, just down the road.

Wednesday, March 16, 2011 - The bill for three was 69.50, which included two glasses of Bordeaux (Le Grave). Hugely affordable, and I felt that the food was of a high standard and was largely well cooked. It fell within the expectations of a classic bistro. Although, if you inspect the menu, it might appear to be quite uninteresting, but don't be put off by this, because I think its strengths lie in their plat du jours. For me, it was the atmosphere that had absolutely won me over. This tucked-away restaurant is just the sort of hidden gem to romance better halves, and to enjoy the company of close friends. It is as the name suggests - a friendly bistro.
