The Independent

Amol Rajan - 5/10

Sunday, October 02, 2011 - For reasons I cannot fathom, at the end of the meal we are shown the retail list, so that only then is it clear how much extra we're paying for the privilege of sitting in this long, thin room, with its clinically white upholstery and tilted mirrors...The summer menu has 14 dishes, six of which come in both small and large sizes, and each comes with a recommended wine. It is mostly underwhelming fare; several dishes have ingredients speaking at, rather than to, one another. They give off noise rather than polite conversation.

Tuesday, September 27, 2011 - I felt neutral (not full, not empty) after eating about six plates at a restaurant. It was all herbs, citrus, vegetable, fruit and small portions of meat. It was, in short, a dieter's paradise. But was it a foodie's paradise? Sort of. The menu is beautiful and enticing in its strangeness. One gets bored of pork belly with mash and dressed crab, after all. But it's risky...Galoupet can obviously do vegetables and understands what is meant by 'light dishes'. They've tried to make a virtue of them and almost succeed. If you're the type who eats out in Knightsbridge or the type who spares a thought for your calorie intake (or both), then this slice of airy minimalism is an exciting new addition.

I live in East London but was recommended this place by a friend and was not disappointed in making the trip to Kensington. The menu is wonderfully inventive and as the dishes are great for sharing it makes for a sociable and relaxed dining experience. I went with 3 friends and we were all trying each others choices. The stand out for me was the octopus, fennel and miso. Although the pasta, squid and coconut was so good we ordered a second plate! The wine list was extensive but not overwhelming and the knowledgeable staff helped me chose 3 different glasses to compliment my food. It's great when you are trying so many varied dishes not to have to stick to one bottle so hoorah for the Enomatic system which gives you the choice of trying different wines as you proceed.

I will definitely be returning as there are still so many things on the menu I would like to try!

Was at a work party there last night. The best canapés I have ever had.

Each canapé had a matching wine - scallops with pear ginger and shiso was divine, and they kept on coming. the duck yakitori was so tender but still tasty and the selection of macaroons was great. pineapple and saffron was my favourite .

Will be back with boyfriend as soon as possible even though I live east. Really nice staff as well.

Oh man. Galoupet is good.

Most importantly, the food is fantastic. The flavours are really unusual yet simple, work together beautifully and are soooooo fresh. I could have ordered the Fig, fregola, purple basil, orange, konbu and hazlnut, as well as the Corn crusted aubergine, green tomato chutney and goats curd by the bucket load. And, seriously, if you do one thing in life: have the Galoupet Olive oil cake. Seriously.

It's not too shabby on the wine front, either. Not only are there groovy wine dispensers where you can try top-notch plonk by the glass for a fraction of the price, but wines available by the glass are suggested for each dish; a nice touch.

The look and feel of the interior design is great, too - and pretty much mirrors the restaurant: light, modern, and luxurious; well thought through and done with a whole lotta love.

Have tested Galoupet twice now, for brunch and for dinner.

My brunch was exceptional, really great kedgeree with baked little vine tomatoes on the side. Properly yum. Most importantly though, the ambiance during the day for brunch is relaxed, so you feel welcome as a Londoner just chilling or if you are there on a business brunch. Not all that many places pull that off with such style. I absolutely loved it.

Dinner is also great - although my personal preference is not to share dishes, there's plenty of variety on the menu for all tastes and you can just keep your dishes to yourself to eat or choose to share. I'm a plain food kind of person and I thought I would find it too fussy/trendy, but I was very happy, it's a broach church menu. It's clearly been very well considered and the nod to seasonality is good.

My only point of feedback is that might be nice to have two side dishes, one vegetable (they have) and one more carby one (yes please) - mini potatoes, or sweet potato chunks. I know carbs aren't cool any more, but sometimes you do just want a bit of carb on the side after a really busy day.

The ability to match wine with dishes is a big plus for Galoupet too - I so very rarely am able to finish a bottle between two, so well done on that. The choices with my dinner were excellent, but I'm afraid I can't remember what they were.

I shall be back for sure - well done to Galoupet.

Great food in a nice surrounding.

Really like the idea of matching the wines with the food and wish that there were more places in London that seemed to care about what you put into your body. A well crafted menu.

New restaurant with tapas style fine food, matched with a wide selection of wine carefully stored by the glass using enomatic wine storage.

Tasting menu was not yet available but the attentive, friendly and knowledgeable waiting staff helped us understand the menu and select eight dishes with complimentary wine by the glass to share

Tomatoes with shiso and pepper dressing was a star on the menu. The sea trout was beautiful and wished I'd had the plate all to myself rather than sharing. Chilli pork rib eye and norfolk white chicken with a kind of peach chutney were delicious. My boyfriend allowed me a spoonful of his Ecuadorian chocolate mouse but I was pleased with my choice of cheese as it delicious, Welsh blue and melty and served with a type of crushed grape jelly on a less appetising cracker but all together it was fabulous.

It was a delicious meal and enjoyed trying a variety of dishes and fine wines by the glass, especially the fabulous german riesling and austrian gruner veltner. When we got the blll and realised it was 50% off food till Sunday we're trying to work out how we can come back again sooner before the offer ends.

Amazing food..the menu consists of a really good variety of dishes, At the end of the meal you don't feel as if you have over eaten there isn't any bread and butter with the meal which spots you filling up before the food arrives, It is all really really fresh, tasty and seasonal.

P.s The pistachio and Olive Oil Cake is to die for !

Food is delicious- light, fresh and clean. Had the chilli pork and a lavender and chocolate dessert. Waitress recommended nice wines for both. Chic crowd- very classy overall.

Monday, August 22, 2011 - Sweet and citrusy pretty much summed up the meal. We paid 57.25. As a restaurant, I thought the kitchen output was irresolute, food certainly came across as second fiddle to the wines. In a way, it was to be expected, this is first and foremost a wine bar, but for the most part, I did think food was well cooked. I did notice that we were bread-free for the entire meal, personally, it was an aberrant sensation altogether. Fibre, protein, nectar, alcohol, fruit, fibre, fruit...The edible bits of Galoupet are a little Tinto Brass, it's self indulgent, but the drinking parts are absolutely gorgeous.

Cheese and Biscuits

Cheese and Biscuits - 5/10

Monday, August 01, 2011 - Mains, thanks to the appearance of some cooked meat, were slightly more satisfying but still nothing special. 'Chilli pork 'Rib eye'' was a kind of polite Thai salad, like something you'd get in a box at Marks and Spencer's, with heavily marinated strips of lean pork and pleasant Asian greens. 'Lamb, chilli pickled fennel, pistachio' was also SE-Asian influenced and would have been a lot nicer if the lamb had been hot - I can't be the only person to find cold lamb fat a bit, well, challenging...I have a feeling that more because of my reservations than despite them, it will do very well.
