Visited this place at lunch today with a friend for the first time. We had one lunch menu and a portion of chicken fried rice. First course came quickly, chilli squid. Always a favourite and the batter was nice and crisp, but the squid itself was rather too rubbery for my liking, and there were only 4 pieces. Chilli cabbage garnish was a little too spicy.

Mains were massive portions. Chicken rice was tasty if slightly bland. The chicken itself seemed reasonable quality though fairly sparse. The other dish wasn't really what we were expecting, the lunch menu was written by hand on the waiters notepad so description was a bit vague. I was expecting fried noodles with veg etc, but what we got was actually very pleasant. Cold rice noodles, raw salad veg and some deep fried tofu, beansprouts and a veg spring roll cut in 2. This was accompanied by a small bowl of what I thought was soup but was in fact very flavoursome sauce.

BYO with no corkage fee, so for the amount of food it was good value.

Atmosphere was ok when we got in and sat near the window and near the other only duo of diners, but it looks quite offputtingly dark and desolate when empty in the daytime, almost put ms off going in.

Waiter was fine, his English wasn't great but that's pretty standard in these Vietnamese cafes.

Good value, pleasant lunch, won't set the world on fire but would happily go back, possibly in the evening when it's busier. Meal for 2 with 2 mains and 1 starter and a soft drink was just under £16, excluding tip. We did leave one of the courses though!

Guys Happy New year..And i am so happy at this moment coz i had the best viet food at Anh dao tonight with my husband for whom it was the first time to try viet food and he absolutely relished the charcoal sea bream and soup.

I am in love with the summer rolls, i have tried them at almost all places in east and central London and the ones here are second to none.

The staff was very friendly and on special request added chicken to my summer roll :-).

The Bamboo interiors tried to bring some authentic feel to the place, its quiet spacious and much better then other viet restaurants on the street.

I have tried a lot of resturants and was always guided by review, but was thinking why did I not go here before , may be because this one has not been reviewed much yet.

I love Vietnamese food and I've visited many on the Kingsland Road strip.

The meal at Anh Dao was the most disappointing to date. There was a feeling of carelessness - spring rolls with unpleasantly burnt edges, mains not well presented. There was none of the colour and herby / spicy variety that adds that special touch to Vietnamese cuisine. It was just bland. Nothing had any smell to it either.

Service was just about okay and it's inexpensive. Atmosphere is difficult to score - the place was pretty much empty.

There was nothing to suggest that a second visit would be worthwhile - fortunately there are great options nearby.

Thursday, January 27, 2011 - Here at Anh Dao I've eaten the best quail, full stop. It was beautifully grilled and indeed an unforgettable and celestial experience. Squid balls: Packed full of dill and herbs with chunky but tender squid pieces. A mouth-watering appetiser of addictive proportions...Pho bo tai: Better on the second occasion, at least it came with the garnishes and the raw beef slices were of sound quality...The crux is Anh Dao comes highly recommended but avoid the Pho!
