One of the reviews from early 2008 prompted me to give the Red Pepper another go having not visited it for years for some of the reasons set out in reviews dating back through 2007.

I read Mike's review with some surprise having been a regular customer of the Red Pepper this year. I frequently bring guests there and none has ever found the food remotely approaching anything akin to the experience that Mike had. In fact his comments have prompted me to write a response here.

The staff have always been friendly and helpful to a fault. I have never known their knowledge of the menu to approach anything close to "average to bad".

The pizza's are genuinely very good and they are very generously sized. The non-pizza dishes also tend to be very good. I know that a lot of attention is paid to the quality of the dishes from the ingredients through to the preparation and presentation. I am really surprised that the seabass was burnt dry and the spinach ravioli akin to eating cardboard!!! I tend to order the seabass whenever it is available and have always enjoyed the spinach ravioli.

It is worth mentioning the desserts. The tiramisu is the best yet. All others melt into oblivion in comparison. The panacotta with pomegranate is also delicious. The white chocolate and pistachio dessert is quite a treat (unfortunately does not seem to be on the menu any more).

Popped in on a monday evening, was seated downstairs. In some ways a more 'atmospheric' room, close to the kitchen and effervescent chefs.

Excellent pizzas - top notch ingredients, served with humour.

My wife reckons she's had none better...

The Red Pepper make great pizza, however the rest of the menu is severley overpriced and food quality is very questionable. The restaurant is very cramped, the tables are small, I understand they need to make money but slightly larger table will add to the dining experience! I have been to the Red Pepper on several occasions and every time I have been content with the food and the service. However, my recent visit highlighted the chefs weakness and the results of this review will reflect non-pizza dishes. Service was OK albeit the waiter's knowledge of the menu was average to bad. The rockfish starter was discusting, with an extremely strong fish taste despite being told that it was not very strong, the clam spagetti drenched in oil, the grilled stuffed pepper started had very little flavour and the spinach ravioly was tasetless akin to eating cardboard. Further the grilled seabass was burnt to the extent that the flesh was completely dry. I will return for pizza only. The Red Pepper should stick to what it does best PIZZA!!

The basilico pizza here is better than I ever imagined a pizza could be. It was so large and generously topped with ripe tomatoes, fresh basil and clumps of buffalo mozzarella that I won’t bother with a starter next time - especially since the ones our group had were fairly unremarkable.

An Italian friend confirms that the pizzas here are better than many to be found in his homeland. Nice cosy atmosphere too.

They say history can’t repeat itself but they had not been back to Red Pepper Restaurant ! I did after a long absence and was amazed to see the original management team from yesteryears back in action. Even the kitchen was headed with one of the original apprentices ! Friendly professional service with exceptional food . A most pleasant dining experience JUST LIKE THE OLD DAYS. Red Pepper has my vote for the best neighbourhood value for money restaurant of the decade.

I agree with the previous review. We went to RP last night. Although quiet for a Monday, there was still a friendly buzz. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The pizzas (we had diavolo and calzone) were top notch, as was everything else we had. I will be going again next time I am in London on business. Very handy from the tube too.

I had stopped going to Red Pepper two years ago because I found the food and service had deteriorated. Recently I decided to try it again and I was very nicely surprised to find the food was very good and the service very friendly. I am surprised at the negative comments as I would definitely recommend it for a good casual night out.

It used to be my local - eating there very, very often.

Just came back from the long stay abroad and cannot recognise the place.

Food not so special at all and service non existent!

Dear Red Pepper - if you want to survive bring Gianni and his team back!

I used to go there twice a month, either take away or sit-in, and thought myself lucky to have such a good and affordable Italian in the neighbourhood. Unfortunately, portions became smaller and smaller and prices higher and higher in the last few months. The food is still good but value for money is not great anymore. What a shame!
