The Pizza East team have ventured west and opened a new pizzeria on Portobello Road. Situated in a former pub, it features reclaimed furniture, exposed brickwork, an upstairs bar and outdoor terrace. The menu is full of Pizza East favourites as well as some tasty new breakfast offerings.

TimeOut - 4/5

Friday, June 17, 2011 - The former boozer it occupies has scrubbed up nicely, with an assortment of cafe-style weathered seating and mismatched tables contrasting with the white-tiled kitchen area and wood-fired ovens. It's all very rustic chic...There's a nod to substantial main dishes: lasagne, slow-cooked pork belly, or salt-baked salmon, but affordable pizzas remain the real draw, notable for their puffed crisp crust, thin doughy base and full-flavoured toppings. A spicy sausage seasoned with red chilli and toasted fennel seeds was a marvellous match to the wispy broccoli florets and creamy mozzarella.

Thursday, June 02, 2011 - The food proves to be highly rewarding, more 'River Cafe for the masses' than aspirational Pizza Express...A few toppings not to be found in Shoreditch have been introduced here, including one starring Portobello Mushrooms, arf arf. Courgette flower, ricotta, marjoram was light and excessively bland - 'a girl's pizza', my companion reckoned. Veal meatballs, prosciutto, cream, sage is a heck of a plateful for the money, a ridiculously luxurious combination: the meatballs meltingly tender and strongly herbed, the prosciutto thoroughly crisped for another texture, the creamy sauce sharpened just enough to save it all from surfeit.

The friendly door staff were kind enough to squeeze us in upstairs on a busy Bank Holiday Monday. The place was full of wealthy families with immaculately dressed children but it wasn't overly noisy or chaotic. We shared a generous board of top quality mortadella, capacollo and taleggio, along with a delicious avocado and butter lettuce salad, some nicely minty pea croquettes, and tender lamb meatballs in a rich tomato sauce. Everything was hot, fresh and tasty - we had no complaints and couldn't manage dessert. With a glass of Prosecco and an Aperol spritz, the bill was £50 for two, including service, which we thought was great value, especially in that area. Recommended for Portobello Road locals and visitors alike!

I heard of the place from a "foodie" friend of mine, so I thought I would give it a try. We went yesterday for a late lunch.

We walked up from Ladbroke Grove station. Looking at it from the outside, I started doubting that I came to the right place; the outdoor chairs looked too rusty and run down. Walking in the restaurant I realized that this was the 'look'.

Although there were only a couple of tables occupied and plenty of large tables were available, it was past lunch time and not a rush time, we four were seated at a tiny table better suited for two or maximum three. The chairs were quite uncomfortable and I started feeling quite un-easy and worried, since I was the one who had suggested the place. I was starting to doubt the potential quality of the food we will be served.

We ordered marinated olives and pizzas and I was pleasantly surprised by both. The best thing I would say was the pizza dough. Our pizzas where delicious. The only comment I might say was that the mushrooms were a little burnt.

Besides the discomfort of the table and the seats, the worst thing about the place was the prices. Our bill was 80 pounds, which felt quite steep for the location and the set-up.

Pizza excellent, but the overall bill is that much more when compared with Franco Manco in Chiswick, so doubt it would become our local. But we'd definitely return. Service really good too.

Gourmet Chick - 8/10

Monday, June 06, 2011 - Pizza East Portobello looks like a slightly smaller version of its Shoreditch sister restaurant. It features that distressed, New York warehouse look which makes a restaurant feel like it has been around for years but in reality is painstakingly created...I couldn't resist the veal meatball pizza which is a favourite of mine from the Shoreditch Pizza East. Chunks of dense meatball are topped with crisped shards of proscuitto and a cream base rather than the traditional tomato. The proscuitto and rocket pizza was topped with slivers of San Daniele prosciutto and handfuls of fresh rocket over a tomato base.
