Until a few months ago I dined there pretty often with my friends or my wife. The meal was always avarage and fairly overpriced. There used to be two very good waiters ( a Portuguese and a Hungarian) at The Salt House with all the skills that were required to do well in this business: Good food and beverage knowledge, great sense of humour, fast service. Unfortunately as far as I am concerned they have gone...And apparently the professionalism has gone with them!!!...The last time it was me who had to write down my own order on a piece of paper and handed it to the server...She could not speak any English...What is the point in hiring this kind of staff?! What is the management doing?! They service charge everything!!!!!....It's horrendous!

Additonally, as I have mentioned above the meals are avarage, sometime below avarage and overpriced. What is more, they have increased their prices recently. For what?

Summing up my experience: Not recommended at all, it doesn't worth even a penny.

Quite suprised by the reviews below - having eaten in a lot of mediocre 'gastro-pubs' this one is more reliable than most - service is pleasant and unpretentious, the manager seems to know what he's doing, and the kitchen seems to be able to put out consistently tasty food -

Until last summer, this used to be a place where one could have an interesting good meal; now everything seems very badly put together (coocked would be a too pretentious word). Unchanged remains the arrogant and poor service.

It is a shame that this potentially great pub HAS gone downhill. The food is really erratic. Once I had a great whole goats' cheese and pomegranate salad, but the next time I ordered it, it was completely different, with a mean scatter of crumbled cheese instead. The last meal I had there was described as "gnocchi" only to be gnocchi-shaped dried pasta in what tasted like a jar sauce. Bit of a rip-off at nearly £10. It's got a nice atmosphere and the owner seems like a decent bloke, but the food and the attitude-filled staff let it down.

The Salt House used to be a fantastic pub/restaurant with great food and beautiful decor. Its rose-imprinted black lacquered walls were awesome. I used to recommend it to all my friends. I will never understand how they managed to change it to the disappointing venue it is now. The food has followed the decor and is bland and un-memorable. Sadly I avoid it now.

Sadly this has really gone downhill, the service is terrible and the food average. On paying our bill we did not add to the 12.5% service charge and our waiter made his disappointment felt - a shame as it was a good local once.

Although I hesitate to disagree with'Big Belly', this is a gem of a pub. And if you sit in the beautiful backroom, it's a gem of a restuarant. The food is nearly all homecooked, the menu changes with reassuring frequency and the staff are good. It's one of the few places I'd travel to on a Sunday.

I think this local gastro has changed hands again, its decor has changed at least 4 times in the past year. The new menu is brief so you at least expect it to be good. I had, prawns with under cooked potatoes, un trimmed rocket and water (meant to be a jus) for starter and ravioli stuffed with cheese, beetroort and poppy seed (a nice idea) cold, bland and really let down by the melted cheddar over the top! Unfortunately this is off my local venues list, at least until it changes owner again!

Decent steak cooked well to order and attentive service, ignore the permatanned crowd who love their mobile phones and avoid the shocking attempt at a Lemon tart which consisted of tooth dissolvingly sweet lemon curd atop some overcooked pastry at £4.40. Nice large back room and a little romantic nook for two in the corner.
