Tuesday, July 12, 2011 - Simple it may be, but every dish is a tempter. From potential starters that included squid with jersey royals and fennel, romaine lettuce with mussels and sour cherries and a sharing cheese course, we went for a platter of iberico bellota chorizo, and sea bass ceviche with broad beans. The chorizo was rich, peppery and wonderful - it's meant as a sharing dish, but my friend had no problems polishing it off. The ceviche was also marvellous - an elegant pile of tender, slippery fish morsels...The straightforward effortlessness of the cooking belied the sophisticated, fine-tuned understanding of ingredients and taste.

Sunday, July 03, 2011 - E had the squid with Jersey Royals and fennel, which arrived on a beautiful slick of emerald olive oil and black squid ink, mingling to look like a highly specialist marble. Beautiful. The spuds were golden and lovely. The fennel, E said, was so intense that perhaps it was braised in fennel juice? Injected with fennel? Something of that order...Stand back and admire the prices, would you? The value isn't really the point, but, on top of the excellence, it is a kind of wizardry.

Such a charming, cosy restaurant and very good, interesting food. That's a great combo in my book!

I wasn't smitten with the hotel's other restaurant Viajante but Corner Room I like.

The biggest hits from our menu were ham hock starter, short ribs main and peanut butter and choc dessert.

Venison in ash with salsify to start was the only duff.

We had an evening meal there - noticed the full menu is available from 12-6 at £15 for two courses, or £19 for three. That's a good deal.

This place is amazing. The food is absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced. Great service - very friendly and professional. The decor is beautiful. It's a bit out of the way for me but worth the trek from West London. I will return! Best meal I've had in London in a long time.

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

Friday, April 27, 2012 - The squid was marginally overcooked and consequently slightly springy, the whole dish was light and delicious. The chorizo crumb was the ingredient which really swung it into the 'excellent' territory as it added crunch and seasoning. My main of Iberico pork (with that paltry 2 pound supplement) was also a tad overcooked, but the sheer flavour of the sweet Iberico can help you forgive all sins. The Portuguese bread salad was a great accompaniment, fused with paprika and lightly fried...You are not going to get a cheaper, better value for money meal in London.

Gourmet Chick - 9/10

Thursday, June 23, 2011 - Lamb belly was soft and deliciously fatty alongside perfect, tiny 'true baby' vegetables and a smear of salsa verde. It was brilliant but even better was the pork and Portuguese bread pudding. In what was a contemporary nod to Mendes' heritage the pork was moist and pink with a topping of extra leftover fat known as the pluma. Contrast was added through crumbs of fried bread which had been cooked in herbs and chilli until they were crunchy and crumbly...We had an absolutely stonking meal at the Corner Room. The food was confident and instinctive while keeping a feeling of spontaneity. Each new dish was a delight. Best of all, the prices were an absolute steal. There is really no excuse not to go.

Saturday, June 11, 2011 - What I like about the cooking here, is the attention to the cooking. And I say this with all the love for gastronomy from the very depths of my belly: The cooking was very handsome...The Corner Room is brilliant. It may even be more fantastic than big brother Viajante downstairs. It certainly is a wonderful brunch venue, and I suspect it will not stay hidden from you guys for very much longer. I love Nuno Mendes' high end trickery, but I also highly enjoy his low-key flirtation of a stripped down performance.
