Zoe Williams - 4/5

Sunday, May 06, 2012 - My ricotta gnudi weren't huge either, and there were but four of them. Imagine the inside of a ravioli, the ricotta, fused with the outside, the flour and egg, then rolled into a ball. They came with artichoke and olives, and the whole lot arrived with a lovely watercress and gem salad and some fried potatoes, along with one of the best aiolis have ever had. Once you've had mussels with this hot but meaty and faintly sweet nduja, I wonder how long it would take you to return to a straight sauce mariniere - maybe decades. The creatures themselves were beautifully fat and fresh. And yet - I don't say this lightly, especially since it was the vegetarian option - I preferred my gnudi.

Tuesday, October 11, 2011 - The food, regularly changing as you'd expect, is terrific: simple stuff cooked well, such as plaice poached into ethereality with wilted radicchio, fennel and tarragon (check out those clever liquoricey combinations); or smart, surprising assemblies such as silky capocollo (aka coppa, cured pig's neck and shoulder), thinly sliced and served with spiced cherries - brilliant...It isn't sophisticated, there's no hi-tech kit or a brigade of silent chefs with tweezers. But it's the sort of food I love to eat, served by lovely people at reasonable prices in surroundings that make me happy. That works for me.

We were lucky to squeeze into this busy market cafe-bistro for a lazy Friday lunch. The menu changes every day and showcases the best seasonal produce from Borough Market. We had a fantastic meal with spot-on service and a couple of excellent and reasonably priced glasses of wine.

To start, we shared a top notch charcuterie plate and a warm mini loaf that was vivid green with wild garlic butter in the middle. Mum loved her scallops served in the shell with chorizo and I was more than happy with my sweet potato gnocchi with wild mushrooms, almonds and tiny bits of broccoli. Both dishes were beautifully cooked and kept simple to allow the flavours to shine. A side of rustic roast potatoes was equally good, served with a pungent aioli. Sadly we didn't have room for dessert but rest assured we will be back soon to try out the dinner menu. Full marks for our friendly waitress and the great laid-back vibe too.

We got a table at short notice even though the place was busy. Nice decor and staff were efficient.

Short menu looked promising - liked the idea of food freshly sourced from what the market had available - but we found the portions a bit meagre and the execution of the dishes not quite up to the price level.

Pork belly was good [but small] and the beef had hardly seen the flame. It was tender enough to take it but I prefer my meat a bit more cooked. My fault for not returning it to the kitchen for another try but feel they should also have asked how I wanted it.

There aren't many decent options to eat in Borough Market on a weekday evening [most are overpriced, overhyped and/or overfull] so I would consider it again if pushed.

It's hard to find a restaurant that has their own identity. Elliot's Café has it's own, but it's a horrible one. The venue looks great, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The food however is very disappointing. A menu that shows complicated food that should be left simple, and a boring and overpriced wine list. Oh well, i'll just stay far away from it in the future :)

Great addition to Borough Market! Went with a colleague last week on our lunchbreak. We did have to wait around 10 mins for a table but that was fine. It was very busy!

When we arrived tap water and bread and butter was immediately put on the table. A great touch I thought.

I ordered the squid with dukkah and alioli with a green salad. I thought it was a bit tight on the portion size but I did enjoy my meal - the dukkah went really well with the squid and alioli. The salad was a good portion for two to share and the dressing was really delicious!

The service was excellent, really friendly. I loved how everything is from Borough Market... really making the most of a great market.

It worked out being around £25 for two main meals, a side salad and two glasses of wine plus free tap water and bread and butter.

I would definitely return.

Location, location, location - Borough Market was always one of my favorite areas for a bite and now, this lovely cafe offers dishes based on fresh food from the market. The salads were tasteful and the squid dish was one of the best I ever had. Oh, and the service is good and friendly as well.

Gourmet Chick

Gourmet Chick - 7/10

Monday, August 29, 2011 - There were no such issues with the fat grilled mackerel (13.50) which came with a jumble of sweet tasting heritage tomatoes slathered in olive oil. Each mouthful was a riot. I could not get enough of the tender, bouncy squid (7.50) which was teamed with a rich aioli and topped with a sprinkling of dukkah to add texture and crunch. Dessert was limited to ices so instead we opted for a cheeky glass of rose each...Elliot's is the sort of place you would be happy eating at for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It's all day, no bookings, casual dining that will fit right in at Borough Market.
