The Cat & Mutton

went there for Sunday Lunch, couldn't order at the bar, they said someone would come over, they didn't, we had to catch someone's eye. Once we had ordered we had to wait about 45 minutes for the food, which wasn't that great when it did finally come. Staff were friendly enough, but a bit, well, rubbish to be honest. If i'm going to spend nearly £30 on two roast dinners, i'd expect good service and fine food, unfortunately we got neither

I organised a group of us from the office to go here for Christmas.
The manager was really cool about my indecisive collegues and the fact that I kept changing the numbers by one or two.
Further more they sorted out my vegetarian lady who didnt want nuts or alcohol in her food.
Also the day before one of my collegues realised that the fish sauce had alcohol in it and he couldnt have that for religious reasons (once more the Cat and the Mutton saved the day by making a butter sauce).
The service was great - the food fantastic - all all the staff very attentive.
We were sat upstairs in a room by ourselves. I was concerned having some bad reviews that it wasnt going to be good but I really enjoyed myself.
I can see that on Friday or Saturday this is going to be a busy trendy place - hence some of the bad reviews.
But I would recommend this place to anyone!

This place is quirky, great fun, with decent value for money food. They always try and change the menu and go beyond the standard pub fare. Been going here for over a year and it's a great local. Some people need to get over themselves. This place has never let me down, and if they did the owner would sort it out.

I've lived opposite this pub for the past year and from time to time make the mistake of going back in to see if it's got any better. It never does - it's dreadful.
The bar staff really don't seem to be bothered, even when there are five people waiting at the bar the staff seem more interested in checking their hair in the mirror or joking with the chef. Of the 3 lagers on draught, there's usually a plastic cup over one of the pumps. Not that they've run out - it's just it seems too much trouble to go down into the cellar and change the barrel. My main memory of the beer there is walking away from the bar with a plastic skiff of flat yellow liquid that doesn't taste quite right - the kind of pint you have to leave on a table half-full as you leave, having paid about £3.60 for the pleasure.
They have an open kitchen - which in most restaurants is a good thing because you can see the good standards the kitchen. Not in this place, where everyone can see the half-hearted slap-it-together attempt at preparation. At the Cat & Mutton you've got a good five or ten minutes to wait at the bar before you can order (the staff only seem to be able to use the till in pairs with one helping the other out) and I've changed my mind a couple of times whilst waiting to place an order because I've seen how the 'chef' is cooking that particular dish.
I once came back from work and there was no food in the house. In desperation I thought the Cat & Mutton might be worth another try (this was July 2007). The Roasted Vegetable Baguette was a small roll filled with margerine containing a few pieces of fried green pepper for £5.95. The rock hard and cold french fries they came with looked though they'd been tipped from the freezer bag into the deep frier at some stage earlier that day, only to wait for a paying customer to come in later on. It's got to be bad when you leave it almost untouched, right? Especially when you're really hungry.
The pub seems to be the 'In Place' for the local fashion college so it gets fairly busy at the weekends. All I can say is, don't eat the food and don't drink the beer. If you want to enjoy the scene, do what most people seem to do - get a few cans from the off-license next door and sit around on the benches under the awnings. The clueless staff never set foot outside.

This place is quirky, fun and great, the menu is always changing and they are prepared to put unusual things on the menu other than just the usual smoked salmon or pint of prawns, followed by oh so predictable chicken and chips or pork belly you get at so many similar style places these days The service can be haphazard but the staff all have a sense of humour and for me that is part of the charm, it is a pub that does great food not a restaurant, which people who have reviewed it here seem to forget, and it is still great value for money, if anything the prices have come down since I started going here about 3 or 4 years ago. Back then the area was crying out for a place like this, now thankfully we have it. How they manage to knock out such great food for so many people from that tiny open kitchen still baffles me. Top quality local for a diverse range of people.

Massively gone down hill.
I went for Sunday lunch and the service was still very bad, the waiters are give the impression that they are above waiting on tables !!!!
Food was not as good as it was in the past and it was overpriced.
Its a shame is this is one of my locals and one year ago it was fantastic.

We made a booking at 8.30pm at the Cat & Mutton, we arrived and found the table poorly laid out, literally next to the bar where customers where queing to get drinks. We sat down, read the wine list and decided to go for the house white, which sounded really nice on the description, but it tasted not much better than tap water. We then ordered our food, our starters where ok but our mains where a dissapointment. The steak was an aged rump steak but it lacked flavour and was not worth £16.00. The pork fillet with polenta was under seasoned and the polenta was cold. The service was unattentive and one member of staff was rude. We had to ask twice for the bill and wait a good ten minutes for it to arrive. I would not recommend anyone to go there for dinner on a busy Saturday night.

I have just read some of the reviews of the C&M below and am shocked at how ridiculous and pretentious some people are. Considering the state of this place before it was done up, and some of the nutters that live around Broadway Market and try and cause problems in here, which is my local, they clearly do a fantastic job to provide a quality place to eat and drink for a wide range of customers from families to oh so trendy nu rave cretins. Amazing food from such a tiny kitchen, decent value for money for the quality you get, a great wine list, and some hilarious people watching to boot. To those moaning below, if you don't like it in here then please go somewhere else as it is always more than busy enough, and I am happy to take your table....

Went last week to the Cat and Mutton, both my boyfriend and i really liked this place, we have recently moved to the area and were hoping for a good local pub or restaurant. The food was delicious and the staff were friendly and helpfull. We
hadn't been before to the Cat so cant comment on previous comments but we really loved the place it was packed and buzzing. A great find.
