I have just returned from an evening at the Cat and Mutton. The first waiter we spoke to quite obviously didn't want to be working in a restaurant as the idea of us ordering food was met with a snarl.

The food did arrive quickly and portion size was good however the meat was tough and mentioning this to our second waiter did nothing for us. Instead it was met with the answer that the meat was bound to be tough in the evening!

We asked for the bill and, despite making it quite clear we were disappointed in the quality of the food we were still asked to pay full price. We then waited 15 minutes for the 3rd person to serve us to bring the card machine. When we mentioned that we had been waiting for a long time to pay we were very abruptly asked why we had not gone to the bar ourselves to pay. The appalling and arrogant demeanour of the last waitress sums up the service overall and will be the reason I never go back.

Was back at The Cat and Mutton for the first time in ages as i'd moved out of the area.

Was a bit unsure as it didn't seen like i'd be able to get a table as it was so busy but when i eventually did, the food was great. Really big portions, really tasty And the staff were busy but super friendly.

I've read some of the other reviews and it doesn't seem like people are talking about the same place.

What can I say? Style over substance seems to be the motto of this pretentious, massively over rated "Gastro" pub.

I have tried to give the food a chance but am increasingly disappointed by the ongoing abuse of great produce, the chefs seem to be resting on their laurels somewhat, rather arrogantly seasoning everything to the point where it's unedible, chips swamped in salt, salad swamped in overly mustardy dressing, the "jus" served with the extremely salty duck breast tantamount to marmite....

The head chef is constantly visible in the open kitchen and seems to revel in this....

Please see sense and look beyond the veneer. You will only be disappointed..

I hadn't been to the Cat and Mutton in a good few months after a lukewarm experience and a couple of damning reviews on this site. What a shame that is, I came here last week and realised what I've been missing. The atmosphere was still the same melting pot, vibrant and occasionally slightly raucous mix that make it such a draw but this time the food was also superb. From my girlfriend's puy lentil, chicory and cob-nut salad to my more substantial and utterly delicious slow roast pork belly with perfect crackling, crushed new potatoes and apple sauce.

Had a couple of bottles of great red and still not too extravagant on the wallet.

Definitely won't be leaving another few months!

Very disappointing. I've been coming here since it started, and they were initially keen to deliver good food and keen to offer good service. The food is now just about adequate and the service is more often than not cursory verging on rude. It's well situated so they will always have customers, which is probably why they don't care. But it is increasingly drinkers, not eaters. There is too much competition from venues who care about the quality of what they serve and how they serve it, and make the people who eat there feel welcome. The C&M would do well to learn from the competition.

The Cat & Mutton can be noisy and it often looks like it has been the subject of a sit-in by art students who have decamped from their native Shoreditch for the evening but if you can deal with that then the food is definitely worth checking out. I have eaten here on 3 occasions and never been disappointed. Had the rib of beef once which was cooked to perfection and would definitely give Anchor & Hope on the The Cut a run for its money. Another time i had a Barnsley Lamb Chop on crushed new potatoes; simply done but really well-seasoned to bring out the fresh taste of the lamb. My girlfriend had the home-made burger which was delicious and generously sized. My only criticisms (apart from the noise) is that the staff can be a bit inattentive at times (although I've never found them rude) and the menu could be a bit more adventurous (sticking to mainly Gastro pub classics). They also have no bitters on draft which I think it is a glaring omission; maybe I am turning into an old f*rt but how come there's four varities of equally vile fizzy lager but no London Pride? All in all though, I think the Cat punches above its weight and I would prefer it over The Dove which is also in Broadway Market. (It's worth noting they also take the Taste London card which makes it doubly good value!)
