Chez Gerard (St. Pauls)

I just spend 30-odd pounds on a "Wagyu Picanha" steak. What arrived was tiny, appeared to be an ordinary piece of rump and was quite average. The bill for two of us, a main course and a couple of beers each, was £87 which included 12.5% service charge.
This place is very close to where I work and therefore quite convenient. A year ago you couldn't get a table without booking. Today it was a quarter full at 1:30pm. No, I didn't complain at the time as I didn't want to sour the mood of the lunch. But I won't go there again.

I went on last month pay - day (friday) and there were just a few couples having dinner.
I then understood why... The food is just so basic and so so overpriced for what you get. The meat was no flavour, small portion and served almost cold. Also, the staff doesn`t know much about the menu and one of them was quite rude.
I am never ever going back there.

I have to agree with the reviewer before me. The food is WAY overpriced for what you get. Average of £15 per head would be more reasonable. Quite tellingly, the mash definitely tasted of the powdered variety. On top of that, the waitstaff are incredibly rude. True, they are probably overrun by a typical City lunch crowd, but this does not excuse the sneering and eye-rolling my colleagues experienced. We just came away feeling really upset and angry, and no lunch should leave a diner that way.

Rude waitress made us wait 30 minutes to order, food didn't come out for another 30, took another 25 minutes to get bill, and the made us pay for olives and crap that we didn't order.

Had dinner there a couple of nights ago. Fabulous food, great service. I was impressed with everything, especially the frites.

Chez Gérard do traditional brasserie dishes such as "steak-frites" very well. I am not sure about the more adventurous choices on their menu. Great venue for business lunches as building is tall and not too noisy. Nice neutral decoration.
Service is also quite good, I thought. Shame about the compulsory service charge though.

Disappointing really, I would liken Chez Gerard to a "more expensive Cafe Rouge", which I'd hope conveys the message simply. The food was nothing exciting and in particular I found the pork tough and the crumble cold and bland. The service was good though and the restaurant itself is pleasant and conveniently centrally located.
