After putting in our order our food came out very very fast which we were impressed with but that is where the good impression ended. The food was only average and the waiter started clearing the all dishes before we had even finished eating! They then asked straight away if we wanted anything else and when we said no they came and put the bill on the table immediately. It was obvious they wanted us to get in and out quickly which made us uncomfortable and not able to relax and enjoy our dinner. Once we'd finished eating we still had full glasses of wine left which we were still drinking, when the waiter came over and said can you please finish your drinks as people are waiting for this table. I don't go to a restaurant to be rushed through my meal and found this service to be very rude so will not be going back here again.

My boyfriend and I used to got regularly because we love the food here but we have know decided to boycott it and here is why. First reason:they serve sharkfin soup. When I learnt about the ecological disaster this soup is and the awful death the shark face for this stupid soup I checked the menu and was very upset to see they sell some. I have to admit we still went there because we love the food and it is opened late so very handy, but I felt guilty from then on.

But then 2nd reason: 3 of us went there one afternoon and ordered take away. Then we fancied a bubble tea so asked for a table. The guy refused to seat us because he said we have to eat! our friend was a bit hungry so she said she would eat something; but the waiter was so rude, he said we all have to eat. We argued that we just paid for a whole duck to take away but he didn't care; then we said we come often and it is not a way to treat customers but he couldn't care less. I was so shocked about this attitude!!

Now we have decided to boycott, shark fin soup plus rude staff and stupid rules, this is too much! And Chinatown is not missing places where to eat good roasted duck anyway!

Good food, fast service and excellent Value For Money - maybe not the nicest decor, but the food was really good.

My experience was absolutely shocking. I took my friend here, telling him how their pearl teas were really good. This place has a minimum order of at least £6 - we only went there for some drinks but fine, we ordered a few things extra just so we could stay there, even though we didn't even want to eat anything.

So straight after finishing our drinks and meal, the waitress came over and slapped down the bill - we hadn't even asked for it. Then 10 mins later (as my friend and I were still in mid-conversation). Another member of staff came by and told us to leave!!!!! YES, TOLD US TO LEAVE!!!!!

I hate this place, demands you to pay more and the food's not even worth it.

i had a more-than-terrible experience at HK diner two nights ago, sunday, Sept 19, 2010, and I have to tell everyone the experience and I will forever boycott this restaurant because of the owner's mean and rude attitude and service; this restaurant doesn't deserve any star or doesn't even deserve to stay in business. I am looking for an official government office where I can file an official complaint against this restaurant.

I am from the United States and am visiting here. I always explore Chinatown in every country and city. I am originally from Hong Kong and have been living in the States for more than 25 years. i have never encountered such rude services and unreasonable manner.

Anyway, my two friends and I walked into HK Diner trying to get the authentic hk drinks and snacks; one of my friends lives here in london; she thought we might seat more comfortably at hk diner so we chose this restaurant; after we entered, a waiter guy wanted to sit us at a round table but we spotted a round booth so we asked for it; then this man who looked like the owner (we later found out he was the owner; they own the space so do not have to pay rent) came and was unwilling to sit us there but told us that we needed to order food in order to sit there; we asked for details about ordering food then he said it's 6 pounds per person; so it's 18 pounds for the table as a min charge (although this min charge was not found in the menu or anywhere in the restaurant); we ok'ed it; sat there; but for 10 mins nobody came to us to take order; then the owner came back and rudely questioned us about what food we wanted to order; i said we were gonna order drinks first then we'd look at the menu; he immediately walked away; nobody took our order; then shortly after that, a waiter guy came to tell us to move to another booth; it was a very small booth for 2 ppl; it was 3 of us; we had to squeeze in; we did anyway; at that point i suggested we leave but one of my friends wasn't sure her favorite restaurant (across the street) was still open so we stayed; then the mean owner came to take our order; we said the same thing and my friend said we might order takeouts later; he lost his patience and said loudly and rudely in cantonese "you guys wanna sit at MY table, you have to order food first; i will have to charge £18 for this table whether you order food or not and takeouts don't count;" wow, at that point, i lost my patience too; i said loudly but calmly to him, "we are leaving; we have money to pay and that's not the way to run a business; you are not the only restaurant in chinatown here" the whole restaurant heard it; i heard him saying behind us with a quieter tone "well, it's up to you then" i bet he didn't expect us to talk back and walk out on him; apparently he always got his way and nobody ever said anything back to him; well, i'm not gonna let this go easily; i have to tell the whole world about his terrible attitude..

first, he just assumed that we wouldn't order food as soon as we walked in; that's not right! second, he told us we needed to order food and there's a minimum per person; that's not right! there's no printed policy anywhere in the restaurant; he just applied that towards us!

it's a restaurant, as long as the doors are open, customers have all the right to sit in and order whatever they want; plus we had been super friendly since we walked in and we had been very patient with his improper manner and unreasonable treatment..

he got us very mad for just £18; now he's going to lose a lot more money than this..

The service was appalling, i hadn't finished my drink and the women had placed the bill onto my table! Next the bill was £9.70 which had included the VAT. I still managed to finish my drink before placing £10 onto the bill plate, but got NO CHANGE back, and also before i left the table, the women had already prepared to give a menu out for the next customer, although there was a queue because it was busy, you can't kick customers out because they haven't finished. VERY BAD SERVICE, DON'T GO

Chinatown has a lot of rubbishy restaurants. An excellent choice - and pretty much the only one I will go to is the HK Diner

Like other Chinese restaurants they have a Chinese menu as well as an English menu. The Chinese menu has the more interesting, authentic and tasty dishes. I have as yet been unable to decipher it - I usually just point to what the other Chinese people are eating - and have never been disappointed. The quality is fantastic at any time of day or night. I often call in here at 3am post club!

The thing I always have is the BBQ pork and Crispy pork with rice (Char Siu and Siu Yo). Its not on the menu - just ask or it. The contrast between the crispy salty pork and the sweetish bbq pork as well as the rice is fantastic. I have yet to taste better.

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

Monday, November 23, 2009 - Walking down the streets of Chinatown, roast meat adorn the windows of many of the restaurants, the chinaman's fast food. HK Diner is no exception and is one of the more popular choices, with the added draw of 'Bubble tea', cold iced milky tea with tapioca pearls...the duck and pork were as grease free as can be hoped for, not an oil slick in sight. A smattering of greens and a rather thin gravy but overall, really enjoyed it. I was dining with the Big German so obviously a plate of rice and meat wouldn't suffice so we got some ribs on the side. Sticky, sweet and very messy.

Tamarind and Thyme

Tamarind and Thyme

Monday, July 13, 2009 - The vegetables were fried perfectly - it's so easy for them to go super limp, super quickly, but these had soft leaves with stems that had just that bit of a bite to them. The fermented beancurd mixture was delicious with it...On a previous visit, we opted to share a baked pork chop rice. This large dish of rice was topped with pieces of fried pork chop and their secret recipe sauce of wine and cream. The whole thing is baked (it takes at least 20 minutes) and the whole hot bubbling dish is then brought to your table.
