Following the success of his Bermondsey Street tapas bar, acclaimed Spanish chef Jose Pizarro has opened a more formal restaurant on the same street. Pizarro will feature a bar with a huge selection of cavas, sherries and wines, where diners can graze on snacks, cheese and cold meats. In the 40-seater dining room, the menu will offer dishes that are more substantial than tapas but still suitable for sharing.

Tuesday, August 28, 2012 - This kind of cooking – four or five ingredients, wonderful olive oil, simple, knowledgeable execution – always looks easy when you're in Spain but it lives and dies by its suppliers. The building blocks weren't special enough, so the end effect was less modernist simplicity than concrete box...I don't think it's the best restaurant on the street, and I don't even know if it's intending to be. It's a place to gather and make a noise, and if you happen to be hungry, all to the good.

TimeOut

Guy Dimond - 4/5

Thursday, December 22, 2011 - Once seated, the brief menu makes the wait worthwhile. Among the highlights of our meal were duck livers served with capers and fino sherry, a clever combination of feral flavours cut with acidity. Spatchcocked quail was moist, served with a slick of nutty romesco sauce. The meaty texture of hake had its metallic sea qualities underlined by clams and some spinach...The wine list is a delight if you like Spanish wines, and the service knowledgeable; besides the sherries and interesting producers you'd hope for, there are also seldom-seen Spanish digestifs such as the Basque Patxaran, which is similar to sloe gin.

I've been to Pizarro many times now and following my experience last night would conclude;

The food is consistently good to excellent - great ingredients, well executed, flavourful dishes and whilst the prices are slowly creeping up, dishes are value for money.

However, other than a couple of occasions, the services has been consistently poor to dismal which lets the whole experience down.

So come on Pizarro, pull your socks up - get some good managers in and some well trained, efficient and friendly staff in - its putting me off coming again!! Your neighbour Zucca is getting it right on both and you should too.

Was visiting the London Glassblowing Studio on Bermondsey Road. When arrived the ‘Blowers’ were having lunch, so we decided to get some lunch ourselves; walked down the road and chose Pizarro, as main courses were approx. £15.00 each. An open-plan kitchen always makes the restaurant busy and cosy. Got a fantastic Waitress that quickly arrange complimentary still and sparkling water; bread with olive oil and salami.

We ended having starter as well, an interesting bottle of wine, called “Flower and Bee” and an Espresso that gave us a spark to go back to the ‘Blowers’. That was also a great experience.

Went there and it was a horrible experience!

First we needed to beg for drinks and they came after food. We asked for some bread (the only good thing in the restaurant) and they never gave (apparently there is one slice of bread per person ONLY). My fish was inedible (literally). My friend had a raw tiny pigeon for £13 and horrible wine (we couldn't finish our meal). If you are a masochist then go there, otherwise avoid it!

We went for a Sunday lunch and were seated in a corner next to the coats even when there was clearly lots of space in the rest of the restaurant. From there things went only further downhill. Our waiter clearly struggled to remember that we were there (!), as he first did not return to take our orders and then forgot to get our drinks. We finally received our drinks after our food arrived.

The food was with tiny portions, frankly overpriced and badly cooked. My pigeon was practically raw and there had been no discussion of how I would have liked it. My companion spat out his cuttlefish after the first mouthful. Our waiter was perturbed that we did not like our food, saying we should have asked him what to order but could not be bothered to bring any more bread after it was requested.

Given our poor experience we did not give a tip, the first time I have done that in the past 15 years!

Pizarro is a really great restaraunt. One of the best places I have eaten in in years.

The service was impeccable and friendly, despite it being busy we felt relaxed and unrushed. The Morcilla was probably the best thing I have tasted in a long long time.

Having walked past this place on numerous occasions and seeing it packed out I had high hopes. Sadly those were dashed pretty sharpish. I usually hate people who bang on about poor service when the food is my main interest personally however it really irked me here. But before I get to that, I was quite surprised by the prices for each course, particularly when you see the teeny tiny size of it when it comes out (and no, I'm not a 6ft big-boned man but a petite woman with a reasonable appetite). I find it hard to believe they can justify such prices when there are other places like Zucca next door that are so reasonable and quite frankly, far better food.

I had the blue cheese croquetas to start - very nice but sickly and really could have done with a chutney or jelly to cut through the fattiness. In the end I asked for some and after trying frustratingly to communicate this to our first waitress, finally a manager brought some quince over which was very nice.

However, my lamb was then cold and had to be sent back. When I told same said waitress about this, she stared blankly at me before asking "what you want me to do with it?" Seriously? I don't care. Just make sure it's hot? No apologies either.

The food itself was ok. Not brilliant. I've had better and certainly have for the prices. Overall disappointing.

Overpriced, tiny portions, salty soup, cold food and poor service. Not to mention the minute carafe of wine, which just looked silly next to the normal sized glass. V disappointing and not what I was expecting. It's rare I would not want to come back somewhere but Pizarro is one of the few places I would not want to come to again. I hope that we have just had a rare bad experience but it's been very disappointing.

Anywhere that has cod cheeks on the specials board will get my attention and have me anticipating good things ahead; most pinxos bars in northern spain have these as regular menu items so it was a welcome sight at Pizarro.

The food didn't disappoint, there was a good variety of dishes on offer it didn't wow. I was instantly irked that we had to ask for oil with the bread - who eats dry bread? The cauliflower crudities were a welcome alternative to olives. The food my chum and I did have tasted rather good but didn't blow us away. I do think it was a little on the expensive side - I will happily pay for food and the expertise that goes in to preparing it but for example £15 plus for a pig cheek dish is pricey when you can get a dozen from Waitrose for a few pounds.

Don't get me wrong, this is a tasty alternative to the smaller Tapas bar at sister restaurant Jose and this being my only visit to date it would be unfair to be too critical, I would go back.

Bellaphon

Wednesday, February 29, 2012 - The prawns may be not be the fabled Palamos y la gamba but they were one of the best I've tasted. Perfectly cooked and seasoned, and the crispy Serrano was beyond a tease!...Heaven is akin to eating near raw pork without the fear of trichinosis. It was boar taint at its finest, a perfume no longer offensive but inviting and luscious...Simplicity at its best; that's Pizarro. Highly recommended.

Monday, January 09, 2012 - To start, one of the best things I've eaten all year, Beetroot Cured Salmon, Capers and an Egg Yolk - essentially a kind of Salmon tartar. We were told to break the yolk and mix it through everything. Frigging amazing. The egg-coated salmon had a silky, fresh creaminess, reminding me, unsurprisingly of breakfast. It was very simple and rustic, yet so effective. Beautiful. Following this, a half portion of Jamon Iberico Manuel Maldonado. An absolute treat, small wafer thin pieces of melt in the mouth, intensely savoury acorn fed ham. If I had the cash, I could sit and eat a plate of this, washed down with glass after glass of cold fino sherry all day long.

Sunday, December 18, 2011 - The greatest strength of Pizarro is the quality of ingredients. Google the blogs, and take a look at the food which comes out - everything looks so vibrant and fresh that it can only be delicious. The seasonal simplicity is like being invited to a close friend's house with her mother doing all the cooking. The nostalgia makes Pizarro the perfect weekend restaurant...This is only the second week of service, and if I can level some criticism, is that the communication between staff isn't that smooth as yet. These are probably just growing pains. Otherwise, the waiters had the right attitude.
