Thursday, October 06, 2011 - The cooking was a joke, though not a funny one. Thin, metallic miso soup clearly came from a packet whereas tom yum soup was disastrously home-made, both hot and sweet, none of the ingredients getting on. Vegetable tempura, served in a poppadom basket, was hopeless, the vegetables raw inside yet burned on the outside, almost no batter still stuck on...We didn't give up. Lamb chops in Korean spices were fatty and fiercely spiced, served with a jammy chilli sauce; pan-fried seabass with tomato salsa Vietnamese style was a decent fillet of fish, not badly cooked, then covered with more jammy gloop. Even plain jasmine rice had a grimly dry texture. That's when we gave up.

Funky Asia – Have now visited this restaurant twice. The first experience was mixed, drinks a bit slow in coming, food very good but arriving in dribs and drabs, but overall a nice night out. A few days later and the moth has somehow turned into a butterfly – with a complete change of staff, service is now sharp food arrived promptly along with drinks. Staff now seem to be working as a team, which given the total change is no mean achievement, attentive friendly and knowledgeable – with the food containing some of the best dishes in town this venue will soon be on every “must visit” list.

Well worth a visit.

Hmmmm, where do I start? This interesting place occupies a spot that previously was a cavernous indian which during the 6 months it was open had all of about 10 customers in total. The decor has been much improved, but is a bit of a mish mash of styles which almost works but not totally. The garish colored lights are cute at the front but when eating makes for an interesting experience with your food tinged with weird colors and you are not quite sure if it looks right. The food is a more miss than hit and for what it is very expensive... if you want some funky asian food you are better off walking the extra 10 mins up to Kingsland road. Also the menu is a bit confusing - sharing plates, some sushi, some main meals, all a bit all over the place with the only common factor is that it comes somewhere from southeast asia! The cocktails and drinks menu has a distinctive asian feel but are some what lacking in appeal - boho mexica a few doors down gets their 'mexican' cocktail list just right with a good mix of safe and wild cocktails. Service was poor - a load of staff, but still took ages for drinks to come. Staff didnt know the menu inside and out, no recomendations made and with only a few punters it really felt like they were watching over you. There was a strong smell of incense which almost made us want to gag, and detracted from the flavour of the food. The music was the most off putting thing - loud early 90's dance/techno. Its such a shame as with a few tweaks this place could be a welcome addition to the area but as it's stands I wont be visiting again.
