Ed Shaerf, a former chef at the Ivy, has opened his first solo venture, One Blenheim Terrace, in St John's Wood. Shaerf hopes to 'revitalise the food of yesteryear - by stripping back classic favourites, staples on British menus, in an imaginative way'. Diners can look forward to his 'cucumber sandwich dessert' - cucumber and ginger sorbet in between a cucumber mille-feuille with roasted apple, orange syrup and a gin and tonic jelly.

Guy Dimond - 3/5

Monday, November 07, 2011 - 'Lobster thermidor' was another 1960s classic, in this case deconstructed into a large raviolo, topped with a bisque-flavoured foam and microgreens: lovely. The deconstruction of heritage dishes continues through every course, with 'leek and potato soup' - blobs of starch in a consomme - to an 'apple crumble' that was a corral of fried doughnut batter balls. The cooking at One Blenheim Terrace is fun and of a high standard - but the catch is that you pay the price, with most main courses in the 15-25 pound range, and some starters just under a tenner.

Thursday, November 03, 2011 - Egg (just the one) Benedict posing as a vegetarian option came coated in crisp fried breadcrumbs, with artichoke puree, some vertically sliced baby artichokes and Hollandaise sauce. It was perfectly nice if you accept that eggs and artichokes can belong together but it wasn't even remotely eggs Benedict. Roast chicken, my choice of first course, was presented as risotto with a piece of brittle baked chicken skin crying out pitifully for its mother 'Noma, Noma' and a section of chicken wing sitting arm akimbo. The oily, buttery gravy of the risotto was ridiculously rich, making it impossible to finish even half of it.

I recently visited this restaurant and it is just what St. John's Wood needed. It is warm and inviting with knowledgable and attentive staff. As for the food it is amazing! Clever, innovative and so delicious. I would definitely recommend it and can't wait to return!

The hottest evening in the year we booked an outside table in this new restaurant. The manager showed as to the table it was very dark as it was 8pm, he had outside lamps which he said he would turn on for us.

Heading for nearly 10 minutes there was know waiter in sight so we were offered no drinks, no menus, no bread and no water..We were just left sitting in the dark dying for a drink on such a warm evening, I could see through the window that there were only one or two waiters on duty, it was not very busy for a Friday evening. I had to get up and go inside to find the manager to ask for all of the above and told him we had been waiting for nearly 10 minutes which is a long time when sitting in the dark and thirsty. A waiter came out carrying menus and said that they where short staffed tonight. We decided to leave as the manager had a very bad attitude and offered no apology...as a local person and a frequent restaurant user I cannot believe the attitude and poor service offered in this restaurant. Not the correct way to treat the locals.

The food may well have been very good but the level of poor service and attitude let this place down in a big way.

I visited the restaurant on a Saturday night before official opening and it really had a great buzz about it already. The food was delicious - a nicely structured menu - I chose confit duck that was fantastic and my date had the lamb, delicious as well. The menu had good variety, not too few or too many choices and everywhere some nice touches showing real thought. Wine list - not extensive, but well thought out. We had the Chateau Musar (second wine), not as "big" as the traditional Musar, but a better fit to the menu.

Service - very attentive and professional.

Decor - same as service, and comfortable.

Atmosphere - very, very good as the restaurant was full and attracted quite an interesting mix, probably due to its location in St John's Wood.

I would assume that it will be difficult to get a table on week-ends very soon!

Complaints? Sorry, but nothing really comes to mind!

Eating at a restaurant before the official opening is fraught with risk - but not here! The biggest risk was how much food envy I would have, when I saw my fellow diner's dishes - I wanted them all. Luckily we did some swapping!

Classic English food with a twist is how I would describe it.

For example, liver and onions was my main. A herby crusted liver with some intermittent spices, surrounded by 10 little onions, alternating between a caramelised sweet pickled onion (wow, that is a surprise!) and something a bit like a mini onion bhaji (but lighter and tastier).

I had the 'cucumber sandwich for dessert - the cucumber and ginger sorbet that accompanies is phenomenally refreshing and palate cleansing.

We spent £135 for two, including coffee, and two bottles of wine (one a delicious bottle of 'Elysium' a Californina Black Muscat dessert wine that I now desperately want more of).

Nice level of customer service, from telephone booking through to them booking us a cab home. No dress code.
