A bit different - not your usual curry. Food is very good although don't be fooled by the cautions that certain dishes are chili hot - take my word for it - they ain't - well not compared to your standard madras od jalfrezi anyway.

Stick to the skillet served tradidtional dishes with dhal and pickles on the side and breads. Cold beer is excellent Katmandhu recommended - wine - not bad. Service is top notch as you would expect from an asian restaurant in this part of town (there is so much competition you have to be good to survive). Atmosphere - understated and usually full but often later on - you can always get a table early evening.

Value for money - a bit more expensive than some surrounding curry houses but it isn't a curry house - it's a nepalese.

Gets my vote!

I have eaten at Gurkha's numerous times over the past 18 months and it never fails to deliver. It boasts an excellent menu and fantastic service - a Balham treasure!!

Gurkhas is a great restaurant. The food is fantastic, good value and can be washed down with great 'Nepalese' beer. (It's brewed in Streatham but who cares!!).

The only con is that it's a smoking restaurant. On the odd occasion the meal has been spoilt somewhat by smokers on adjacent tables. Roll on the smoking ban next year.

I highly recommend this restaurant. The service is impeccable, food is great and the wine list is good. It's not authentically Nepalese, or Indian, or anything else, however the quality of the whole package more than makes up for this. The food all feels very healthy too, with none of the oily sauces you find down the road in Tooting. It's just a shame the restaurant is nearly always empty!

If you're looking for a great Indian restaurant, you've found it. If you're looking for a great Thai, you've found it, but Gurkha's Diner is neither. London-Eating has them as "Pan Asian". All I can say is they pan most of the local competition! And Balham has some great Indians.

This place has prompt and excellent service, a varied menu, and if you aren't sure what to have ask the waiter, they really know their menu.

I couldn't agree more with "Rog". Discard "Sam's comments below (chain restaurants rarely deliver...).

Enjoy.

I have eaten in the Gurkha's Diner with my girlfriend and friends on many occassions for the last 2 years. It has become our favourite restaurant in the area - the food is always excellent and you will not find friendlier service (all Nepalese staff). Sometimes it can be a little quiet which I find very strange but on the weekends it is normally full. Enjoy!

P.S. I am very suspicious of 'Sam' below as over the dozen or so times I have eaten there it has always been superb

I have been to this Nepalese Restaurant three times and it has been fantastic, its great to go out of for a curry with a difference, the food is freshly cooked to order and the service is very welcoming.

I really recommend this place as its always been a really good night.

I do not know where the above reviewers get their taste buds from but this restaurant is nothing short of dreadful. How they can serve what appears to be pre-prepared bought in food when just down the road in Tooting there's a plethora of curry restaurants all of them serving far superior quality food. The only redeeming feature is they do stock the marvellous Nepalese Kathmandu beer, in fact if you excellent Nepalese cuisine try the Monty's chain of restaurants.
