The Balcon, a new all-day brasserie, is now open on the site previously occupied by Brasserie Roux at the Sofitel St James. It features 1920s interiors inspired by Coco Chanel's Paris apartment and a Champagne balcony overlooking the dining room. Head chef Vincent Menager has put together a menu of classic French and British dishes like braised leg of rabbit in Dijon cream sauce and Label Anglais rotisserie chicken.

Wednesday, April 04, 2012 - Sticking with bubbles kept us fresh and our palates zingy where the hollandaise-esque custard (actually very delicious, a bit like omelette Arnold Bennett, a creamy egg dish with smoked mackerel) could have cloyed and thickened the taste buds. My friend had indecently rich Herefordshire snails (with garlic jus, parsnip puree, Mas air dried ham and country croutons), also benefiting from the Ruinart's sophisticated, lean zing...Le Balcon lacks Soho cool or Mayfair snobbery. But by God it's good for a hair letting-down session - just don't expect to feel slim when you leave.

Monday, November 28, 2011 - If you think 'Welsh charcuterie' sounds like it belongs with Dutch wine or Greek sushi as 'things to avoid', you'd best try a platter of the Trealy Farm charcuterie, from Monmouthshire - the air-dried hams, game salami and lomo (pork loin) match or better anything coming out of Italy or Spain. A dedicated charcutier keeps it all tip-top. We were less impressed with the burger, in a too-sweet brioche-style bun; and by the cassoulet, which contained good meats, but in meagre portions and with the beans overcooked. The chips were pale, insipid, and undercooked. Cornish brill was better, garnished with brown shrimps and capers.

What an amazing restaurant and value for money. The staff were ever so polite and Catered for all our needs. The manager gave us her card with her email address and phone number so when we come next time we can give her plenty of notice and they can cater for us even better. Me and my friend had wheat and dairy allergy.

We will certainly come back again next time. It is such a beautiful restaurant and building. So posh and better than Ramsays I must say. Xx I gave them a £20 tip.

My husband & I made a booking for the Balcon Hotel, as it looked great on the Top Table website & I had spent ages looking at all the top restuarants. This was our first trip to London & wanted to go somewhere special to celebrate. We went on Saturday 3rd March, after seeing a show. The restuarant looked really nice in the main room, just like the website. Unfortunately we were seated in a side room & my husband had a lovely view of their coatrack! We asked if we could be placed in the main room & were told you have to ask for that when booking - it would have been nice if that had been explained to us then, otherwise we would have chosen somewhere else. The staff were nice & attentive, especially the young German woman & the young French waiter. We would have liked the duck, but were told it had sold out, so I opted for the chicken instead & even though it was nice, it definitely wasn't as good as I know the duck would have been! We were disappointed that our evening hadn't turned out as well as expected & not sure if we will recommend this restuarant to our friends who would like to have a nice evening out in London. Disappointed Aussies.

I am surporised to see that the new Balcon has quite a modest rating up to now. Their pre-theatre menu is not only excellent value, it is also more imaginative than most. I have recommended it to two sets of friends - their opinion has been the same: lovely dining room, terrific food, the most attentive Gallic staff we have ever come across & marvellous prices.

This was my favourite pre-theatre restaurant when it was a Roux restaurant with impeccable service and excellent food. Therefore I was so disappointed to go there after reading such good reviews to find that the service was haphazard and the food extremely bland ('canteen food' declared my hubby). The food was so obviously pre-prepared for the pre-theatre mass and tasteless. Take my advice and eat elsewhere. London is full of decent restaurants.

An excellent room in a great location, previously part of the dreary Brasserie Roux chain, now transformed under new management.

Huge, eclectic menu with a variety of traditional french and english choices (snails, pike custard for example) means it's easy to choose a lightish lunch or full scale blow out.

Cheerful, knowledgeable service.

Highly recommended.

Where else in London will you get a Champagne Angel to help you choose from some very special vintage champanges or from the wine list? Where else in London are you offered different kind of original knives?

The Balcon, the new and totally refurbished Brasserie of the Sofitel St James hotel is this autumn's good news.

The atmosphere created by the sophisticated environment is brillant, everything is just well designed and well placed.

The Food is an innovative franco british british fusion with a wine list that will enthuse the true wine connoisseur.

Best new london venue.
