Tootsies (Putney)

The place is a disgrace. I've been going to Tootsies for 25 years - was a regular to the one in Wimbledon village many moons ago when they used to serve proper food and loved it. My parents live almost round the corner from the Putney one - so we've gone twice with the kids. Once was enough, but I got persuaded.to give it another go. Never ever again. The service is shocking - non existent when they are busy. We refused to leave the 'discretionary' tip because of this - and the watiress didn't look at all suprised. Maybe she's used to it. The burgers are rubbish and overpriced. It's gob smacking that in this day and age - and at a specialist burger restaruant - they don't even mention the provenence of the meat. I asked a waitress and she didn't know. Is it from Poland? Mars? She shrugged. Who cares was the attitude - it's meat isn't it? Well in that case, why is a burger a tenner? The good review from Anon must surely be a member of staff. They get away with murder because of the position near the river - but their days must surely be numbered

The service in Tootsies Putney is fantastic. They have a great crew who really care about their customers, and if you are a regular they treat you like family.
OK - so the food: Come on everyone, grow up: for the price you pay you cannot expect gourmet cooking in a chain restaurant, but having said that the burgers in my opinion are better than GBK because (1) they are not too big (the GBK burgers are way too large and have that awful relish as standard - who told GBK they needed that relish? yuk - heinz ketchup and french's mustard is all that's needed) (2) don't ask me why but the GBK burgers have too much of a meaty/fatty taste, they stay on te palate like a Big Mac does -ugh. The tootsies burger is meat, well cooked and does not leave an aftertaste.
So get real everyone and grow up: Tootsies is a chain and they have a formula to fulfil. IMHO they do a credible job but don't expect a culinary nirvana for the price you pay.

Just had another very poor meal, poorly served, at Tootsie's of Putney Wharf. First time I went there, food was medicore, service was appalling. This time, both were grim. Three of us ordered burgers - which arrived (eventually) without cutlery or napkins. Rather than wait for anyone to pay us any attention (life is too short) we ploughed on with our hands. At no point did any one come and ask us if everything was all right. I know that people only come here when there's a queue at GBK or Moomba, but maybe things would change if they actually tried to give service - and served fresh burgers as opposed to frozen ones. Never again.

It is really difficult to understand why anyone would go twice to Tootsies, when there are infintely better alternatives elsewhere in Putney. Carluccios is better for coffee and deli food, Gourmet Burger has the significant edge over Tootsies on burgers and somewhere like Moomba has Tootsies trumped on all levels -- excellent atmosphere, varied menus, fantastic breakfast/brunch (they also do good burgers too -- on a par with GBK IMHO). Overall then, Tootsies has become a culinary irrelevance.

The main reason most people go to Tootsies is for the excellent quality of their burgers. Sadly things have changed. We went recently and were very disappointed with the burgers they are now serving. The 'Tootsies Classic' was clearly a frozen pre-purchased burger straight out of a packet. It tastes no different from the bog-standard burger that you can purchase in any pub or café. They do offer an organic burger for about £10 which might be homemade, though I didn’t try one.
This is a real shame as Tootsies used to be the place to go for one of the best burgers in London. I used to go there a lot. I won’t anymore!!!
