Great time there!

When you get in the area you think you're in the middle of nowhere, and then you go into the restaurant and it's fine!

Downstairs when I have been there (in November I think), there was a bar with travestis, very funny! And another more casual bar.

Upstairs is the restaurant with open kitchen.

Food is great, a mix between classic British and English meals, not too expensive.

My girlfriend introduced me to this restaurant for my birthday. The best birthday meal ever, food was fantastic and staff excellent. Will return but this time taking more new people. Wonderful.

I was surprised to read the previous review re staff attitude...we turned up to the restaurant on Saturday night without a reservation but the staff were extremely friendly and managed to squeeze us in for a quick meal. The food was delicious and I found all the staff we met friendly and yet also very professional.

We only had time for mains and coffee. It wasn't the cheapest meal we've had but you only get what you pay for. The duck shepherds pie sounds a bit naff but was the most delicious meat I've tasted in ages. Can't wait to go back and sample more of the menu. They had a midweek early bird offer and also Sunday lunch which might be worth looking into, I know I will be!!

I was here this week and thought that the food, bar, music and interior were amazing. Sadly, I found the staff to be rude & patronising and spoilt the entire evening for our group. They were unable to carry out reasonable requests and when we took matters into our own hands we were spoken to like naughty schoolchildren. There seemed to be a distinct lack of Christmas cheer here and for all the positives I can't recommend this place.

I've only been here for brunch at weekends, but I am planning to go back for dinner sometime.

as a local, I am a big fan of Bistrotheque because there isn't anything like it in Hackney.

the food is prepared to high standard, the service is good and the staff not pretentious or arrogant. it is not as cheap as we are used in the eastend, but i am happy to pay a bit more for a special treat.

For brunch I have had lovely thick toast with jam, and i have also been here for roast dinner which was a huge plate ful with a crispy yorkshire pudding. yummy !

I was brought to Bistrotheque by my boyfriend and had a wonderful time. After a very good (and strong) gin and tonic in the bar we progressed upstairs for our supper. I had duck salad to start, it was cooked pink and came with a great dressing. For main i had fish and chips which had been recommended to me by a friend who had eaten there the week before. They somehow managed to surpass their billing - crispy batter and flaky haddock, simply heaven. The other half had sirloin steak, which was huge and apparently brilliant but I didn't even get offered a bite! For dessert we shared a bread and butter pudding which was nearly as good as the fish and chips, but not quite. The evenung was made all the more enjoyable by the charming waiter who looked after us so well. I can't wait to go back.

I was taken to Bistrotheque for my 28th birthday as a suprise by a bunch of my friends and it turned out to be quite easily the best night out I've ever had. Being in a big group, we chose 3 starters and 3 mains for a set price - all the food was fantastic, and there was a great selection of wine to suit any budget (and to get you nicely merry). I'd love to go back again, and would encourage everyone to try it - especially as the cabaret downstairs was so fantastic as well. We were entertained by Nigel and his piano skills (and our own horrendous singing) for a good few hours. Brilliant staff, brilliant food, brilliant entertainment. Brilliant.
